Hi all you lovely people

Wonder if you can help me? Quite a few years ago now I read a story that has come back to mind time and again over the years. I borrowed the book from the library in Middleton, Manchester where I was living at the time. It was in the sci fi / fantasy section. I enjoyed this book so much that it got me started on reading other books in the section and thus I have spent such wonderful hours reading all the lovely stories of Anne McCaffrey.

So now my problem, although I do remember the gist of the story I don’t remember either the Title or the Author. I would just love to get hold of this book again so if any of you find you recognise the following synopsis please, please, please put me out of my misery.

The story starts with the hero visiting a small holding or fort in order to discuss with the leader there, that he and his people join him in a war against some evil. The meeting does not go well and our hero leaves very angry. On leaving he comes face to face with the fort leader’s daughter and directs the force of his anger at her. He would not wish to do this as he has a strong mind and directing his anger in such a way could have hurt a lesser persons mind. After the hero has left he receives a strong feeling/premonition that the girl is important in some way and he cannot ignore it. So during the night he steals back into the fort and kidnaps the girl from her room. Our heroine is taken to his camp where she meets and becomes friends with his people. She is also trained in the art of combat. I cannot remember much more except that our heroine plays a vital part in the war, at first going against the hero’s orders be riding back to her home and convincing her father to join up with them.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Regards
Chez

Me neither and I did search; there's just not enough facts to go on... you'll need to find someone who read the book.

The outline you gave does sound familiar but I can't come up with a title

Oh, oh, oh! I know it!

One of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors!

You are describing The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.

Thank you so much Cheryl, you have really made my day Now all I have to do is buy it. I never really thought anyone would remember it, given how little of the story I was able to recall. Your marvellous and thank you again.

You gave a very good description of the basic plot (though Harry is an orphan living at the manor house, which is separate from the fort, but that blurring of detail is understandable). It's a very good book, as is the prequel (meant to be read second), The Hero and the Crown. I forget which is which, but one of the books won the Newbury Award and the other was a Newbury Honoree.

Pam would have known it, if she ever got her hands on a copy as I've suggested she should for several years now.

My avatar doesn't look especially like me. It's a drawing I made of my Pern character, Sariel. Her hair is actually brown, but when I scanned it, it came out looking a bit red-tinged.

I think I may go out and get a copy of both of those books as well. I'm going to have plenty of time to catch up on some reading this summer and I can't wait!!!

Well I checked things out with my local Ottakers and as I kind of expected The Blue Sword is out of print, which meant so was The Hero & The crown (which was the winner of the Newbury award). So I have just been on Amazon and found/bought copies of both books (new) for under £10 which includes Postage amounting to more than the cost of the books themselves. I am well pleased , now just have to wait patiently for them to arrive.

Good luck getting copies of them Kater, if all else fails take a look at Amazon.

Great drawing Cheryl do you do much illustrating then?

Hey! I have only so much storage room in my head for "books I must look for." I ran out of cramming space

No, it's a seldom-pursued hobby, only when I have a need for an image that I think I could draw well...

The book sounds really interesting.

*goes off to see if her library has it to put on hold for her*

...a few minutes later...

Library has about 6 copies in the system - all checked out. I have it requested and I'm #2 in line to get it.
