Thumbs up Alright..so i'm slightly confused.

Now, I literally JUST finished reading Dragonsdawn, and am looking for where to turn next to continue on with the series (The order I should follow to make it slightly like a sequel - so I get all the information.) To quote Cheryl, Book and Short Story List
Dragonsdawn
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (includes following 5 stories)

"The Survey: P.E.R.N.c"
"The Dolphin's Bell"
"The Ford of Red Hanrahan"
"The Second Weyr"
"Rescue Run"

Dragonseye (UK: Red Star Rising)
"Ever the Twain"
Dragon's Kin (with Todd McCaffrey)
Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
Nerilka's Story
"Beyond Between"
The Masterharper of Pern
Dragonflight (includes following 2 stories)

"Weyr Search"
"Dragonrider"

"Runner of Pern"
Dragonquest
Dragonsong
Dragonsinger
Dragondrums
"The Impression" (JLN)
"The Smallest Dragonboy"
The White Dragon (includes following 1 novella)

A Time When

"The Girl Who Heard Dragons"
Renegades of Pern
All the Weyrs of Pern
The Dolphins of Pern
The Skies of Pern

The Anthology A Gift of Dragons is comprised of "Ever the Twain", "Runner of Pern", "The Smallest Dragonboy", and "The Girl Who Heard Dragons". As these stories are chronologically diverse they are listed individually above and A Gift of Dragons is not found on the list.

Omnibus editions:
The Dragonriders of Pern (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon)
The Harper Hall of Pern (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums)
On Dragonwings (Dragonsdawn, Dragonseye, Moreta)

Is this the order I should follow to get it all right, or a different order? All help is appreciated

As a sequel to Dragonsdawn in chronological order, you need to get hold of "Chronicles of Pern". This is a book with five short stories - skip the first and the other four follow on chronologically from Dragonsdawn

After that, the next book is Dragonseye and then the short story "Ever the Twain". After that comes the recently published "Dragon's Kin", to be followed by Todd's new book Dragonsblood, which is due out in January.

After that, post again for further help

And enjoy discovering Pern

Now, I literally JUST finished reading Dragonsdawn, and am looking for where to turn next to continue on with the series (The order I should follow to make it slightly like a sequel - so I get all the information.)

For a more detailed listing of chronology of the series, check the chronology page on Pern site: http://pern.srellim.org/chrono.htm

Please note that many of the stories overlap a little or a lot, making reading in strict chronological order impossible. Also note that if you're a first time reader, this really isn't the recommeneded reading order for you. The books were not written chronologically and the McCaffrey's vision of the world, which shows in the stories, clearly evolved over time. That said, the choice of how to read is yours and yours alone!

I think sometimes it;s a matter of choise. There is a Chronological Order to the reading of the books, I myself tend to read them in the following order.

Dragonsdawn
Chronicals of Pern:First Fall
Red Star Rising
Moreta
Nerilka's Story
Masterharper
Dragonflight
Dragonquest
Dragonsong
Dragonsinger
Dragondrums
The White Dragon
Renegades
All The Weyrs
Dolphins
Skies

The Short Stories, and I admit I don't have all of them, I tend to read independantly, though I am capable of mentally placing them in their proper time squence.

I know that there are those who will disagree with the way I do it, but as I say, it comes down to personal choise, and what you are comfortable with. I think the main point is, so long as you're getting them in the right chronological order Pern timeline wise, your pretty much doing ok

Welcome, Judgement!
My dear, if you want to go by Ms. McCaffrey's authorship, the first book she wrote was Dragonflight. I must admit, I was confused too when the first book I read was White Dragon. I would seriously recommend that you read the books the way they were written, since there are many concessions made after the "rules" are set.
You are off to a good start, no matter how you go about it!

I've never noticed that before - but it does fit rather well in there, doesn't it?

As for reading order, internal chronology is fun when you've already read everything once, but for a first pass through? I'm not too sure. I'd certainly suggest breaking away from the chronology once you've reached Red Star Rising/Dragonseye, and moving straight on to Dragonflight, working in publication order from there. Although... I guess the new reader would still have a few surprises in store if they continue with internal chronology. I guess it depends on how the reader wants to see the world develop - through the evolving pen & mind of Anne, stylistically consistent on a book-to-book basis, or from the pov of Pern itself. It'd be interesting to have a first-time reader's review of the books read in internal chronology, just to see which bits they prefer and how they feel the world being built up around them. Anyway, I'm rambling, so I'd better stop there!

i started w/ the harper hall trilogy, because i had read reviews on the back of a book and saw Anne's name. My mother then went to the "children's" section of the bookstore and bought them. Then, i got TWD at a library booksale, and realized i should start with DF.

I started with DS then read Moreta. got annoyed slightly cos I thought it was set AFTER DS and the only person left was Lessa-I got mixed up with Lessi for a mo! as i'd recently got fed up with aqnother author who used big time gaps!
Soon worked it out though!

i read dragondrums....

i had to go by what was available in the library!

I did the exact same thing! I found TWD in my highschool's library (which has a very poor selection of McCaffrey's books) and had no idea what was going on. I didn't know that there was a series (I don't pay much attention to bookcovers) and thought that it was just confusing and I took it back to the library. This year, almost 3 years later, I discovered Dragonsong, had no idea until I started reading that it was connected to TWD, loved it, and that's what got me hooked on the series.

I think that Dragonsong is the best one to start with because it introduces you to Pern through the eyes of a teenager who still has much to learn about the world around her. Things tended to be explained more thoroughly in this book. Also, it's difficult to really understand the series when thrown straight into a story about the dragonriders, those are very fast paced, while the Harper Hall trilogy sees more of the world and explains it.

I totally agree I loved Dragonsong and found a lot of things explained in the book. I love Menolly to and although I love all of Anne’s books for a variety of different reasons. If I have to choose a favourite then Menolly’s story wins. It’s the book I pick up time and again. Also when I recommend Anne’s stories to anyone I always tell them to try this book first, as I think it’s a lovely introduction to Pern.

The first Pern book I read was Moreta, and that was fine because the book is more or less stand-alone. There is Nerilka's Story of course, but still... In general I prefer to read the books in publication order. That way I can ignore inconvenient innovations/rosebuds more easily.

I would start with Dragonsong - and did! I read in the prologue the summary of DF - how Lessa went back for the weyrs - and when I went back to the library I went looking for that book. I couldn't remember the title, but surely All the Weyrs of Pern was the one! Computers? Wha???

Being something of an "oldbee" I read them pretty much in the order of publication, though I haven't read all the short stories. As has been mentioned above It's a good way to understand the evolution of Pern, as you can see it developing in Anne's mind as it happened.

I completely agee with you. The first book I read was DF and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Then DQ and TWD. Actually I bought TWD and wouldn't read it untill I read the first two. There is a certain vision that AMC has that you only get when you read them in the order of which they were written.

I first read the original trilogy, then the Harper Hall trilogy, and just then went on reading the books chronologically. I'm now on Moreta, but I'm putting that aside for a while, as I have books I need to read for school, so any other will have to wait. But I think it's easier and nicer reading it chronologically, as most things are connected, and you know what they're talking about. I tried reading AtWoP before I read the prequels, and I have to tell you: I had almost no idea what they were talking about (considering I also read the original trilogy a couple of years back and so forgot most things) and didn't know who half the characters were.

I prefer to do the books in chronological order since thats how "history" on Pern happened and you can see the development of the culture and technology....thats just my thought...I know many others like to read in order of publication.

I accidentally read White Dragon before HH Dragon Drums...they are chronologically out of order...I forgot so I went from Piemeir from an apprentice to traversing the southern continent and missed his story. Will fix my order next time I start over..

oh, I also read almost all the books chronologicly after i finished the series the fist time .(i read WAY to fast for my liking, mainly because i miss many of the deitails, but it also means that i read all the pern books in about a year, so all i can do is read them all over again in different orders....)

I'm always confused. But have read all the PERN books available to me up until a few years ago (I've missed Todd's last 2, even if the last one isn't available yet). I see some titles in the list I need to look up!

I read Dragonsong first, in high school (many many turns ago) and was hooked. I wouldn't recommend someone new to PERN reading in chronological order, but start with maybe either Dragonsong or Dragonflight first, and read the major books in that particular time period in order (as much as possible - some overlap), then go back and read the books in the other time periods - such as Dragons Dawn and the related stories, then maybe Moreta, etc. Anne doesn't repeat things unnecessarily (to my infinite relief) in the stories so alot may be missed if one would pick up at the "beginning" or with something like The Masterharper of Pern" or with one of Todd's books.

Now, I've read all the books I have (pretty much all of them) at least a million times each, and Todd's a few. Certainly the main: DragonFlight, etc. and the HH trilogy.
