I met an AMC Fan in the real world!

So, I was at a business dinner last night, trying to make polite conversation with the chap on my left and it was heavy going Anyhow, after a few false starts he eventually commented on the dragon necklace I was wearing - Hans will know the one I mean So we got talking about dragons and fantasy and LoTR and I mentioned Anne's name - and it turns out he's read all the Pern books We talked up a storm after that, it's the very first time I've met someone in person whom I hadn't already "seen" online who didn't look at me as if I were crazy when I talked about Pern

PS: and the real irony is - we were talking in Norwegian

That is wonderful Anneli! And shows you the power of that necklace. I had a brief encounter with a young woman at the counter in the card shop a few years ago, who noted the necklace and asked if I liked dragons. She was a Pern fan too! Unfortunately I never saw her in teh shop again (nor had I seen her before), and I go there at least once a month.

Doesn't it give you the best feeling to meet someone who knows about Anne? Once I was in a bookstore looking up something on their customer computer, and I heard someone say, "Mom, look what Anne McCaffrey has to say about it!" and there was a person holding an Eragon book, reading Anne's reccomendation on it So I couldn't help but go up and start talking about Pern wither her, though her mother wasn't too thrilled with a complete stanger coming out of nowhere and start talking about dragons

I hate sitting at a dinner party not having anybody to talk to. My necklace is an ankh hieroglyphic, but it has never helped me through a boring dinner party.

I can think of at least 4 Danish persons that I know of that have read some of Anne's books, but none of them are really fans, they "just" enjoy her books, but not enough to start collecting them and join forums.

I've met a few-one of which I won't try introducing to the forum-he' the dreaded lab partner! I leant him dragon's dawn on a residential trip and he moved all my bookmarks for the discussions so I lost the pages!!!

I was introduced by Pern by someone I met on a cadets gliding trip-sadly I lost contact with her tho!

Hmm, I'd have to take a pic as I don't think I have any of it already. It's somewhat reminiscent of the necklace Lessa wears in People of Pern -- a dragon wtih outstretched wings, but silver and hanging from a central point rather than the chains going to the wings.

There will not be a dig in Jordan this summer so I am planning to go to Greece

I've "studied" greek and roman culture too, Larry And I've been to all the most important (and a lot less important) sites, including Mycene

Nearby Epidauros is also fantastic!

That is fantastic, It really looks like a Pern Dragon. Not like most of the ones like that, that look like an oriental dragon, or a fantasy magical dragon.

I can't believe I forgot about this one! Once when my mom was in hospital for a month or so, when I went to visit her, the woman at the ticket booth noticed me reading when my grandpa was paying for it. She asked what I was reading, it was Moreta, and her eyes lit up and had a huge grin on her face. She was reading Dragon's Eye at the time, I think. So every time after a visit with my mom, we'd stop a few minutes at the ticket booth to talk about Pern :laugh: And my grandparents had no idea what the hell we were on about
