The second edition was done as a Ballantines trade paperback only and published in December 1992.

There must be a thread here about the differences between the two editions, e.g. what the second edition has more.

found it http://forums.srellim.org/showthread...over%27s+guide

In that I wrote about the differences:

Quote:
DLG2 has 260 pages against 178 for DLG1 but most of those pages are filled with (incomplete) indexes on dragons, their riders and the book itself (an index was sorely missed for the 1st edition and there were several existing online well before the 2nd edition was published).

DLG1 ended with chapter XI, the pronunciation guide

In DLG2 chapter XI is called "The End of Thread (pp. 175-186)
Chapter XII: "Life after Thread" (pp.187-195) has all the new halls, crafts, holds and weyrs. XI and XII deal with info from All The Weyrs of Pern mainly.
Chapter XIII is about "Dolphineers" (pp. 196-202), obviously holds the infor from The Dolphins of Pern.
Chapter XIV is called "New Life for the Dragons" (pp.203-206) and looks to the future of dragonkind.
And chapter XV is now the enlarged pronunciation guide (pp. 207-209).

And it can be ordered online if you can't find it through a bookstore or the library!

I might have to go looking for this book at some point since I don't have it.

However, I do have a different Pern resource book, Atlas of Pern which has always given me a clearer picture of the Weyrs and Landing.

Edited to add: That my copy of the Atlas is hardcover.

Atlas, though, for those looking, is long out of print and much harder to find. (Which is why, much as I want the money, I rather think I'm not parting with that one.)

Barnes and NOble have the 2nd edition on their shelves here...

Borders may be able to order the out-of-print Atlas, but it'll be more expensive than buying your way out of hell.

Oh yes, it's amazing! You must find it. I still see it on the bookshelves in Barnes and Nobles. Sometimes it's at the end of a row of books rather than with McCaffrey's selection (although it's usually close by) because it's a wider sized book. ::Luck for you!::

@Mawofone, It is very nice to have both the Dragonlovers Guide, and the Pern Atlas. They can both add nicely to your enjoyment of the Pern stories. You can usually find both of them on the internet for reasonable prices.

The Atlas is certainly worth the extra trouble, excellent book. The DLG may cover a more broad range, but the Atlas is far more accurate.
