Default Hold/Hall/Weyr color guide

I had a question about the colors of Holds/Halls/Weyrs in email a few weeks ago, and there's a discussion about them over on AMCF at the moment, so I thought I'd post the color chart info for everyone.

This info comes from the Ista Weyrbook, a wonderfully complete guide to the Pern of the fandom writing club run by Harry and Marilyn Alm (obsessive fans may have noticed a bibliographic citing of the Ista Weyrbook in the DLG). This guide to the exact colors of Holds, Halls, and Weyrs uses DMC embroidery floss as a reference - which is a readily findable product in craft/sewing/embroidery stores in the US as well as abroad. The guide was worked out in consultation with Anne, and is listed as copyright to Anne McCaffrey 1986, 1994. As such I believe it should be taken as canon.

The numbers in parentheses are the DMC color number.

Fort Weyr - Weyr brown (420) and black
Fort Hold - Weyr brown (420) and yellow (725)
Ruatha Hold - Red (666) and brown (938 or 838)
South Boll Hold - Red (666)
Benden Weyr - Weyr red (816) and black
Benden Hold - Violet (554 or 550) and Weyr red (816)
Bitra - Dusty red (3350 and white
Lemos - Medium blue (799) and white
Half Circle Seahold - White and medium blue (799)
High Reaches Weyr - Weyr blue (796) and black
High Reaches Hold - Weyr blue (796) and tan (738)
Nabol Hold - Brown (801) and white
Tillek Hold - White and Weyr blue (796)
Igen Weyr - Weyr yellow (725) and black
Keroon Hold - Weyr yellow (725), white and green (906)
Ista Weyr - Weyr orange (900 or 947) and black
Ista Hold - Weyr orange (900 or 947) and white
Igen Hold - Red (666) and Weyr yellow (725)
Nerat Hold - Weyr orange (900 or 947) and Weyr yellow (725)
Telgar Weyr - White and black
Telgar Hold - Red (666), white and medium blue (799)
Crom Hold - Weyr yellow (725) and blue (809)
Southern Weyr - Forest green (704), light forest green (699) and black
Southern Hold - Light forest green (699) and forest green (704)
Eastern Weyr - Midnight blue, silver, and black
Honshu Weyrhold - Red (666), white, and black
Baker - Light tan (739) and brown (433)
Farmer - Weyr yellow (725)
Harper - Rich blue (820)
Healer - purple (718) or maroon (815)
Herder - Yellow (783)
Miner - black
Fisher/Seacraft - Sea blue (806)
Smith - Red (666)
Woodsmith - Forest green (895)
Starsmith - Red (666)
Tanner - Brown (680)
Trader - Steel grey (317)
Vintner - Dark red (498)
Weaver - Lavender (553)

I've left off this list the minor holds and some minor crafts as well - if you want to know about a particular one not on the list here, ask and I can look it up for you.

With time in the future, I may try to match these DMC colors to the 256 web palette as best as possible, but I'll have to dig up my DMC color chart first....

Good god...
Costume idea: They sell these little dragon things that wrap around your neck at buycostumes.com. They look like fire-lizards. Adding old, traditional clothes and ones of the badges above would be a great thing...

Kudos, Cheryl.

I wonder how good those shoulder dragons are. I like them too, especiallt the fact that they have folded wings! But it's only a drawing and not a real product The price is low indeed.

Does anybody know anyone who has bought one?

They look like the same sort of latex dragons that I've often seen sold for $50. They're pretty nice - especially if you buy from someone that actually colors them as a Pernese firelizard and uses faceted eyes instead of cats-eyes. They do sit nicely around the neck. In appearance they are similar to Whelan's dragons. The price is nice for that one, but it's not very Pernish.

I'm not sure if she's still making/selling them, but Renee did true Pernese style shoulder dragons with the same latex mold. If still valid, her email is firehillqueen @ netscape.net

Nope, as it's simply a latex skin made from a mold.

Sorry to be dredging up an old topic... revamping my club's website.
I notice that Fort Hold is listed twice in the list in the first post, should one of them be for Fort Weyr? Which one.. first or second?

Hi again Eq4bits! I've had time to look at your question now. It was the first of the two that was meant to be Fort Weyr, which I've corrected above.

The "Weyr yellow" color you asked about in your email must refer to the color for Igen Weyr, as it's the only Weyr to use yellow. "Weyr yellow" is really just a moniker for a particular shade of yellow, just as "Harper blue" is a particular shade of blue.

Most Holds and Crafts that use a yellow seem to use Weyr yellow, but there is one exception -- which answers your next question: Members of the Beastcrafthall are called Herders, which you'll see from the list above uses a yellow that is not the same shade as Weyr yellow.

I had to come back here just to tell you I loved the duct tape quote. My son has one, not on the level of yours, but it is cute; "Silence is golden, and duct tape is silver" I guess you need teenagers to understand. Just wanted to try to return the smile, take care.

Any thoughts or recommendations on where to find posssible Dophin Hall colors, I know that it was late in the game, but I love Readis' tale of forming the Hall. Thank you, I'll look for a DMC color quide, my Mom had one when I was younger, she started me on Anne, well thank you for your help. Hope I did not do anything wrong when I was here, felt a little intimidated, is that cheesy? Take care, and please continue! Said with a big smile!
