Words seem so inadequate yet it was words, her words that changed so much. Her words made me the person I am,helped in the life I have. Brought me years of pleasure, countless friends I'm blessed to still call friend. Her words inspired my art
Her words made me know I wasn't alone. Made a computer and the internet home, which lead me to other forgotten fandoms. Which lead me to love.
So with words I say THANK YOU and REST IN PEACE. You and your words will always hold a treasured place in my heart.

As I posted on my FB wall:
Before Masterharper Robinton, along with his bronze firelizard Zair, latd down their heads and passed away, AIVIS (Artificial Intelligence Voice-Address System) before shutting its own self down, had shown him this message from the greatest book ever written,
"... and a time for evey purpose under heaven..."
This is the scene that comes to mind when I think of Miss Anne... Rest in peace.
The first book I picked up of hers was "The White Dragon" - I've been hooked ever since.

Still too much in shock to react coherently.

But it was something that was coming closer and closer. I knew it but I rather denied it of course.

Rest in peace Anne. Us loving you will never cease.

Harper, tell me of the road,

That wends it's way beyond the hills,
Does it go further on?
Until it ends in Sunset's Gold?
I began crying at my office last night, probably 5:15 or so local time, when I found out, and didn't stop until I fell asleep from exhaustion at home around 8pm. The boyfriend came over to snuggle me at 9:30, and I started up all over again. I wasn't coherent until 10:30.

I'd tell my story about how I found Anne's work, and how it changed my life, but honestly, I wouldn't know which story to tell. There's too much. Pern is inextricably entwined with nearly every major choice in my life, deliberately or unintentionally. I might as well just write my autobiography and call it a day.

The only thing I could easily, quickly point to as decisively pivotal was when I read "The Smallest Dragonboy" in seventh grade English. In the hope that I might share some of that love and wonder -- and encourage others to do the same -- last night I grabbed my copy of Get Off the Unicorn and recorded myself reading the story. Please feel free to give it a listen and, if you like it, share it with others (especially your kids! It is a YA story, after all).

At some point, I'll do a big tl;dr writeup. For now, I have to get back to work, though of course my mind, as ever, is adragonback somewhere under double moons.

I haven’t had much time in the past couple years to post, but I’ve always kept Anne’s stories close to my heart as I finished school and started my first real job as a research scientist.

My heart broke this morning when I heard and I’m incredibly saddened by this news. My eyes have yet to dry. Like so many of you, Anne McCaffrey touched my life more than I can put into words. Even though we never personally met, this is a hard loss. Her worlds will forever be with me and she will be sorely missed by all.

Quoted before, this one phrase really sums everything I’m feeling right now. “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven”!

My condolences to Anne’s family in this hard time.

I hope that the following says what many of us may find it hard, at these times, to say:

From weyr to weyr the final dragon keen
...rises to mark her passing to Death's rift,
for she has gone to other lands unseen,

this heartwise Dragonlady, who we deem
...the Masterharper, who had sung her gifts
from weyr to weyr. The final dragon keen

strikes at our hearts, that seemed once joyous, green,
...but now in mourning sorrowed, sere, adrift,
for she has gone to other lands unseen,

the lands of no return, that is, between;
...and so her sun has set, the tidings drift
from weyr to weyr, the final dragon keen

never abating, since their sorrows mean
...that Anne has gone, and hence our woe won't lift,
for she has gone to other lands unseen,

to no more know her world's woes, or its dreams,
...its dragons soaring, wise, beloved, swift
from weyr to weyr, the final dragon keen—
for she has gone to other lands unseen.

Stu called me over last night while he was checking Twitter to tell me that somebody had retweeted the news. We then spent about an hour continuously checking things until we were certain that it wasn't an awful mistake.

Anne's works have provided me with many hours (days probably) of reading pleasure. I never got to meet her but I heard so many wonderful things about her from those who had that I'm really sad that I never got the chance.

May you rest in peace Anne, you will be missed.

I can still remember chatting to her in the old Kitchen Table chat room. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was always good to her fans. She was the first author I ever personally knew outside of her writings and she made it all so much more real.

RIP Anne. We will all miss you and your writings.

I actually sniffled when I first heard on Facebook. Know she'll be missed by both fans and family. And I've a sudden urge to go back and read the first novel I ever read of hers in remembrance. Should probably read The Smallest Dragonboy too as that was actually first..

God, when I first logged in tonight, I thought the title was a mistake or that I had read it wrong, but now... I'm very saddened by the news, although, as many have sad before, I didn't know her personaly. Dragonflight was the of her book I read and it introduced me to Anne's beautiful writing, and it remains one of my favorite books of all time. I have imagined many times to be there, on Pern, on the backs of those magnificant beats she created... And now, my favorite author has gone between.
RIP, Anne, thank you for the joys that you gave me through your books; dragons cry out to you in honor. Condolences to Anne's family, my thought are with them in this time of saddenes.

Returning member here...

I just heard the news from Bronze-Dragonrider, who made posted this heartbreakingly beautiful painting on deviantart.

My mom got me into Pern starting with Dragonsong. I was in middle school, and there was something about Menolly and the expansive world she lived in that resonated with me. I have since made enough Pern fanart to fill a truck. Through the fandom, I've made valuable friends who got me through middle and high school.

Anne McCaffrey created a world that has endured for over forty years and counting. I will never forget what it's meant to me,

My heart is in my throat, and I think my brain is still in a state of shock.

Ever since I picked up a copy of Dragonsong when I was a little girl, I have been hooked/addicted to reading every book of hers that I could get my hands on. I've had to replace several copies due to wearing them out from reading them over and over again.

Anne, I will always remember your kind reply to my email that I had sent to you many years ago, and it is with gentle regret that I never had the opportunity to meet you face to face and tell you how much your books, and your writing, meant to me. You are the reason why I became a writer, and you will be sorely missed.

Wow... just... wow

Even when you know someone is in ill health, it is hard to believe they're actually gone. And yet, she left us so much of herself. As someone who has dabbled in writing I know how much of me has gone into what little I have written.

My mind keeps circling back to the scene in 'All the Weyrs' where Robinton, Zair and Avias pass.

"To everything there is a season..."

And I can see Menolly letting the drum slip through her fingers...

Today two very dear friends Cheryl and Hans contacted me to let me know what had happened, that Anne had passed away.
I don’t seem to be able to stop the tears from falling and I can hardly move with the weight of the sadness I feel…I will miss her so very much.

I have come here to share my sadness with my Pern family…Oh Lord, all the wonderful dear friends I have made in the past five years here on
MoM and in real life…all because of Anne.

All the *BEYOND Belief* incredible adventures, from a San Deigo Book signing to WorldCon, and finally Europe/Copenhagen, when so many of us
got together for a once in a lifetime trip of memories with Anne, all this I have enjoyed because of her and her beloved stories.

Listening to her read *The Ship Who Sang* [my favorite and hers] as if only for me in Copenhagen, has to be one of my most precious memories
of her. Watching her roll out on stage at Worldcon…wearing one of my original Pern-art t-shirts, or yelling at me across a parking lot in San Diego
*Your wearing my t-shirt*[one Cheryl had made for me, with her portrait on it, that I was wearing…my husband took off his matching t-shirt and
gave it to her then and there…she laughed heartily while she thanked him for it]…or the note she wrote me asking if she could buy one of my
portraits of her…then finding out that she put it in her dinningroom where she said she could see it whenever she wanted and that it made her
feel young again. These are only part of the wonderful memories I will always have of her…

Lord, all the artwork I have created in my life, because of my love of Anne and her amazing stories.

She has done more to possitively influence my life than any other person I have ever known…and the memory of her and her stories will live
with me all the days of my life.

To the Horsehead Nebula and beyond dear lady...

P.S. Thank you Cheryl and Hans [for the notes]...and Sara [for your beautiful video]...because of them I could share these memories.

Words are tough to come by for this loss........

Anne McCaffrey's writing is heartwarming, exciting, interesting, intriguing......with wonderful characters and stories. Her books have helped me through many personal and emotional times and they have a sense of right and wrong that is felt throughout the words of every sentence and paragraph.

As an admirer of her amazing writing.......I took the time to learn more about the person and could see she loved family and close friends dearly and never discounted all the people that enjoyed her books.

My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this time..........Anne McCaffrey will live on through her books as she rests in peace.

Will you believe it only just hit home for real? I just got of the phone with Gigi, Anne's daughter. I did feel the need to express my condolances personally and knew that Alec, with whom I worked so closely during those early years of the Kitchen Table and The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey website, was in Ireland.

Yesterday evening I simply couldn't get my courage up and call and I thought that today would be better and that my mind would be more at rest, But I cried during the call and still have trouble not to do so now. I am so, so, so glad that I decided to pay her visit on her 85th birthday, earlier this year! And she looked so much better, walked so much better than she had done before... Then came the bad news before she was to travel to Dragon*Con and I got a fright. But she pulled through yet again, as several times before. This last time turned out to be too much even for our strong Annie to cope with.

A quiet funeral service will be held for her Saturday at Collier's Funeral Home in Dublin. And the family is planning a larger memorial will be held sometime next year for more family and friends. Gigi confirmed to me it will possibly be streamed online.

Remember that lovely little white rose bush I gave Anne on her birthday as part of the set of gifts from us all? Gigi said she planted it in the garden and that at first it didn't do well and wilted somewhat. Then, like our beloved author, it defied the odds and shot up and bloomed perfectly when it was time. That set me off crying again. Damn.

Anne has touched my life in so many ways I can't begin to describe them all. But apart from her great books and wonderful stories she "gave" me friends and I got acquainted with so many wonderful people of all ages, from all over the world, just through the shared love for an author. And I know, from personal experience, that she touched so many people that way that you would almost think that she was more than "just an author". She certainly was gifted, in many more ways than having an uncanny good way to tell a story and write it down.

Yesterday I twittered:
"Heaven better had dragons. Anne McCaffrey deserves one. Goodbye my friend."

To which Jody Lynne Nye reacted with:
"Well, would it be heaven without dragons?"

My favourite Pern poem suddenly gets another meaning...

Harper, tell me of the road
That leads beyond this Hold,
That wends its way beyond the hill...
Does it go further on until
It ends in sunset's gold?

Dear, dear, Annie,
Thank you for everything
Rest In Peace

I was asked to write a blog article on Anne and her influence for The Huffington Post,
if you want to read and/or react to it you can use this link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hans-v...b_1110988.html
and I've arranged for any messages that have and will be made in my website's guestbook to be forwarded to Gigi later.

A special word for Sara Slack:
Sara, yesterday I also didn't have the courage to play your vlog. This morning I did and I thank you for it. It is the perfect and in a way a beautiful example of the way Anne touched lives and influenced lives. Thank you, I would never had had the courage to do that. Hugs.

I wonder whether Mike & Tanya can come up with an Elegy for Anne?

I didn't realise how much I was obviously vocal about my appreciation for everyone here and Anne herself. I just received a text from one of my University friends:

"Hey Sara, I just heard about Anne. I'm sorry."

The fact he didn't need to even say her last name speaks volumes to me. A lot of people on Facebook also messaged me when they heard, especially the people who had been a part of the Dragonsong Musical.

Hans:
Thank you. It was rather difficult for me to do...and even now there are things that I so wish I had included in that video. It wasn't rehearsed or pretty or eloquent...but it was truthful and heartfelt.

That was touching Hans.

On a note that would have been positive had the news not been so sad: the BBC have linked to the Pern Museum and Archive in their article about Anne today.

She 'went between' on my birthday. That kind of sucks! Pretty upset right now. All my love go's out to the family and friends of our dearest Anne.

Thank you for that lovely article Hans!! It brought a smile to my face and tears to my eyes!!

Though I never had the honor of meeting Anne, I feel so lucky to have had the chance to meet all of you through her writing. As you said, her works will stay with us for generations to come and for me that is the greatest tribute we can give Anne!! I’m sure she is smiling on her dragon now and happy to know how she has touched all our lives

Anne McCaffrey was my favorite author. She was also a wonderful person. I lost count many years ago how many times I have read and re-read many of her books. She was a champion for the underdog and for aspiring women authors. Her writing was unique in the depth of life which she infused into her characters and worlds she created, including profound observations in humanity, love and empathy. I will certainly miss Anne McCaffrey very much. I don't see much commentary on her Talent series of books (I include the Tower and the Hive series in this), but these books were my favorite series and I think they particularly exemplify well her unique characterization of a depth of life. Rest in peace Anne and may her family have comfort and be blessed.
