Jube and P'ter: Yes...although I am not sure you knew you were asking the same thing. In Pennsylvania, the mines were athracite (Hard coal) In Virginia and Kentucky, they are Bismuth (soft coal)

According to Google, Pennsylvania came up with 3 different types of mining so I was generalising about coal as a starting point, can't answer for P'ter though ... I'll start with the first "cab off the rank" and ask if it's the Powerhouse museum?

My alter-ego with a geology degree finds it necesary to point out that bismuth is an element; you meant bituminous coal for the soft variety.

There are also lignite and brown coal.

HAD to make me look at a map, didn't you, P'ter?

The answer is no, it is not west of a N-S line through Harrisburg.

Which should narrow things considerably, since it cuts off 2/3 of the state.
