Default Fan Fiction - Do you have a favorite?

I started this Thread in AMCF, and decided it would be interesting to see what your thoughts here would be.

No doubt, many of you are readers of Fan Fiction, and not just that concerning Anne, and no doubt you have favorites, either by story or even a favorite FanFic Author.

Here's a little Thread for you to Post links and/or information with regards to your favorite(s) you'd like to share with us. Just be sure that if it is a little risque, you let everyone know.

We all have our tastes, but the well written stuff I believe can transcend that no matter what the genre.

To start with, here's a site I stumbled across a couple of days ago. The stories there, I will admit, are somewhat NC17, and relate to Star Trek: Voyager, but the author has written these tales extremely well. So well in fact that, were they in book form I would certainly buy them. (I need not let you all here know what my Fic tastes are since you probably all know that already but please be assured I wouldn't recommend anything unless I was absolutely sure that it could definitely transcend genres and tastes.)

So, here's a link to the author's site, Red Moon

Judge for yourselves, and if you do have any faves, regardless of genre and subject you feel we would all enjoy, Post a link here.

Like everyone else no doubt, I always enjoy good stuff regardless.

I really haven't read fanfic except for Pern. And with Pern, I'd have to say my favorites are Dragonchoice, and Kath's stories.

And mine.

That reminded me of a CCS FanFic I read that I found profound. I'll have a look for it when I have a free moment.

I'd say that Lynne Hamilton, Salomen Opah, and Nola O'Connor are the best out of all those characters. As I've said before -- I'm partial to 'take no prisoners' alpha types. *shrug*

Alright, many of you here would probably have heard me mention this Fic on several occasions, so I guess it behooves me to place a link to it here.

Warning - NC17

Wonders of the House Presba

This is quite a saga, and is still a work in progress with new parts due out sometime in the next two or three months.

I tried reading this -- too many Borg though.

Yes, too many Borg.

Giving Voyager two or three ex-Borg is one thing -- Janeway goes one-on-one with the Queen (they're about evenly matched IMNSHO) while the two or three ex-Borg deal with the Queen's posse -- the formula is classic, and tends to minimize the technobabble.

Basically, ex-Borg tend to devolve at some point into Mary Sue characters.

You obviously didn't get much beyond the first part then, Yes, the Borglings are there, and the encounter with the Collective was predictable, but things have moved on from there.

Have you been through The Maze Of Mines - or did you never get that far?

Never got that far.

I suppose I might as well give the story another try -- you obviously enjoyed it, and for some reason I can't see you reading crap and enjoying it.

Edit: Tried again. Still didn't manage to get completely through Modifications, but... the way plot has gone so far doesn't match up well with my personal standards, and I actually made it past the point where I would typically answer this question: "Is this story worth reading any further?"

Still, I'd hesitate to label Wonders of the House Presba "crap", as my poor opinion is a reflection of my own failings -- I'm basically citing lack of evidence.

One problem is all the polyandry -- I don't really see myself ever having more than one partner. If other people want to, that's fine ... provided there isn't any duress involved. Another problem is the 'living ship' concept -- it just seems lazy and fairly shallow on the part of the writer, lending itself as well as it does authorial fiat (more and more lately I've found myself in 'truth and consequences' mode). A third problem is that the plot feels too AU -- unlike Past Imperfect, key characters just feel ... wrong.

Seven of Nine's asocial tendencies, prelidiction for analysis, eidetic memory, etc fit her backstory. I certainly don't see her being half the slut she is in Modifications.
B’Elanna Torres gets denigrated even more -- she loses control of her emotions within seconds of being introduced, and it seems that she never bothers to reign them in.
Kathrine Janeway's portrayal is in many ways even worse than Seven's -- from what I remember of the show, Modifications Janeway appears to be some freaky counterpart from some negative universe or other.

This is a different Janeway. Doubt I really need to explain who this Janeway is to you if you've read past the first Chapter.

Originally, Janeway and co set up the Polyandry as a way to deal with the Yilfans - It was only supposed to be a temporary gambit, but after the events in The Maze of Mines, things kinda went wonky (for want of a better word.) After that, it was either deal with it the way they did, or wind up - at best - bouncing off padded walls, at worst, the senior staff going Klingon on each other.

Sometimes, survival makes strange bedfellows. (Pun intended.)

Another thing to consider too is this is a divergent AU set up after Kahless bounced the dying Admiral Janeway from the final Episode of Voyager back in time and into her younger self.

I had figured most of that out already, actually. None of that changes the fact that I find the plotline sorely lacking.

Again, if you liked it, more power to you -- doesn't mean I have some sort of obligation to enjoy the fic, or even that I actually did enjoy it. I didn't, and I figured that out in time to avoid reading the damn thing in its entirety.

I've actually gotten used to few other people sharing more than a small handful of my opinions. *shrug*
Quite frankly, I'm not sure I'd know what to do if I met someone that sincerely agreed with more of them.

No wonder everything ends up changing so much! In my experience, one can count on religion to poison pretty much anything and everything that isn't kept away from it.

Well, everyone has their opinion. All I was interested in was if you'd given the tale a fair shake before you gave up on it. I've been guilty of that myself on a couple of occasions much to my chagrin later on.

As someone who typically feels written out of the equation himself, this pisses me off.

Oh well, par for the damn course. *shrugs, points to signature*

EDIT: Kugai, I already knew that sort of bullshit pisses you off. You said "it speaks for itself," which is typically indicative of a strong emotional reaction. It's rather obvious that bigotry offends your admirable sense of ethics, so the aforementioned "strong emotional reaction" can only be anger.

I hope you don't think it's me that makes you feel that way draconichybrid, I Posted it that way simply because I felt that the story was more eloquent in it's 'Speech' than any gabble I could type in.

This is a Daria FanFic. It's an interesting tale on the series, starting at the begining, and adding an interesting extra character.

I was a bit concerned over this one as the Author hadn't done any work on it for a while, but I got a notification E-Mail on this tonight and it looks like Dark Kuno's gonna get back to finishing this rather well written tale.

What I've read in the Whateley Universe is decent ... but CONTENT WARNING: NC-17 AT LEAST and I wouldn't call it great.

Oh... expect liberal use of Gender Bending, so if you're not into that sort of thing, STAY AWAY!

I thought I'd share these with you - they're a couple of KP Fics I read over the last week. They're KIGO, but they're rather interesting.

First up, there's The Middleton Pact. A rather interesting take on how things work between GJ and the Villains - and how Kim goes bad for the right reasons.

Then there's Ties. Has some dark moments, but also has some rather humorous ones as well. You should get a kick out of the Mutant Food Army in the later chapters.

I just ran across this on FanFic.Net. It's new, and only one chapter is up at present.

This has the potential to go either way, it could be fantastic or wind up stinking like month old fish - it should be interesting to see which.

And no, it is not my usual.

Cheryl? What HAVE you started?
Dude, you want to talk about strange... my husband has been doing a lot of consulting at a local company that abbreviates to MoM (and calls themselves that). I have to remind myself when he speaks of MoM it's neither my forum nor his mother that he's referring to!

Singapore has a Ministry of Manpower!

There's also a site called DeadbeatMom, but I'm not sure I like the look of that one.

Here you go ...

Quote:
Pseudepigrapha are falsely attributed works, texts whose claimed authorship is unfounded; a work, simply, "whose real author attributed it to a figure of the past."

Lineage - A KP FanFic

This is a rather interesting take on the Teen Heroine. It's not KiGo, but it's definitely interesting
