Tia's age

I'm re-reading my BB books (at least the ones I have!) and I'm a little confused. How old was Tia when she graduated? I thought sixteen but later in the book it said eighteen. Anybody know for sure?

I'd say sixteen as well. I can't remember where they mentioned she'd graduated at 18... There were some pretty big continuity errors, however. Such as the claim that they didn't accept any candidates over the age of 1, when Moira had been shelled at 3 and she was an adult when Tia knew her. Or claiming that all conversations in the cabin were recorded (to prevent another Nyota 5 situation), while both Alex and Tia seemed more relieved than anything else when he finally admitted his fixation on her. A fixation that potentially could get him kicked off the brawn program.

I take the first as meaning they hadn't take anyone over the age of 1 since Moira. The second? Maybe they forgot about the recordings.

That would depend, on the type of problem, for Moira had a problem with early aging, They could not find a cure. Her mind was still flexable, even though her body was not.

16 for shell people 18-19-20 for softshells for their schooling would take longer with the hormon change or something like that.

As for record in the main cabin, that group of young par the pun high born brats, were telling about the could make the most credits within there 5 year assignments, as in wrong way to do it.

People who are shelled from a very young age apparently don't need any sleep at all. Even Tia had only 3 hours of DeepSleep a night when she graduated. So, with accelerated brain development (Helva remembered her first birthday), no sleep, no free time, they're basically in school 24/7/365. Makes sense to let them graduate ASAP, since they'll spend a lot more time in school than any mobile humans do, counting free time, time for sleep and weekends/vacations. The early life of brains is very boring.

Well, I've looked back through the book and can't find anything about Tia being eighteen when she moved into her ship. Guess I must have imagined it or something.

This isn't one of those things where the US version has lost a few of the details, is it?

I remember reading that she was 18 too but can't find the reference now either, and I've only just read it again! It stood out to me at the time because all the other brainships were 16 but I think I probably thought it was because she'd joined the programme later and must have needed extra schooling to catch up but I don't think it explained in the book.

I think where people are getting confused is when Tia is thinking about graduation... she is 16, while "softshells" don't graduate until they are 18. She is contemplating the differences, and it's all in the same paragraph.

Nancia was 16 y.o. when she graduated.

Don't recall about Tia. In chapter 3, doesn't state anything about age, just the fact that she graduated and received presents and told that if she doesn't get a brawn soon, she'll be "told to.....".

It's possible that Tia's graduation was delayed a bit, since she was shelled at 7.

I did come across a bit where she thinks that if she hadn't ended up in a shell she would have been working on her double-docs. Not sure how much that counts for since she was clearly a genius...

Well, at that point she had been working for a few years IIRC and was in her twenties. Still, a 7 year old who can solve quadratic equations in her head definitely qualifies as a genius.

After reading the bit about Nancia in the Quest thread, I think I may have got my Brainships mixed up.

:;blink:: No, that part was still early, before even the Zombie mission, I'm pretty sure. Want me to find the exact page again?

Page 92, which is chapter 3, before Tia even settles on Alex as her brawn.

Thanks for the quote. Funny how I've sort of ignored that one, probably dismissed it as completely unrealistic. Sure some get their master's degree at the age most people graduate from high school, but doctorates, never mind a double doc? Not the least credible IMO...

:;nod;: It's possible she was exaggerating. Or was in fact already in her 20s... Like I said, it isn't really helpful.

Well, since the first chapter had her running higher level algebra, as well as pretty successful chess strategies (even accounting for her own weaknesses in the game) at age 7, she might have pulled off accelerated work and been going for doctorates by then. Of course Anne did have a 9 month old walking talking, and performing specific tasks in Damia, so its not impossible that if Tia hadn't been shelled, she'd have graduated high school level by ten, and been finishing up doctorate work in several fields by 17-18. No beyond her being 7 years old there were no age or time references to go by in The Ship who Searched....... Worse than Crystal Line.

I always felt that she was about the same age as Alex, or slightly older, especially considering how they act. She's most definitely an adult by the end of the book.
