All the Rest One-offs, romances, fantasy novellas, short stories... If it's not in any of the above series - or it crosses the realms of multiple series - come discuss it here! |

Great news!
Cheryl posted an announcement, but members can't reply, only hosts. So this is presumably a good place to discuss the news... Cheryl's announcement mentions Barque Cats, I wonder if this is tangential to the Talent universe in any way?

I think this would be fantastic, especially if it ties in with the Talent series (a favorite of mine). I hate to admit it (especially here!) but if I had a choice, I'd rather have a telepathic bond to a gorgeous Barque Cat any day! I can't help it, I just love cats, especially the wonderful Maine Coon cats which I believe Anne has had or still has a number of and which I believe Barque Cats may be modeled after.

It's quite possible that Barque cats have absolutely nothing to do with the new series, but I'm otherwise at a loss to explain why I've seen that as a title a couple times recently. The Talent Barque cats always did have quite a lot of personality and clearly more intelligence then was explored directly, so it doesn't seem out of the question for them to be subject of the book.
One thing I'm curious about, is whether this series is aimed at the YA market or not. I'm hoping not as I've found their YA collaborations less interesting then the general/adult market ones, but with a subject matter of cats it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was the aim.

Well, I found this especially interesting, since a while back at PF we had a chat with EAS, and she mentioned that she and Anne had written several Barque Cat stories, but no one had picked them up. Or, at least several catcentric stories.
So I thought people would be interested. And since I very rarely go into the Announcements forum, I missed that blurb. ![]() |

Well that is an interesting detail Shalyn! It seems to confirm that it is indeed the Barque cats that are being written about. And the fact that it took a bit for them to get a contract for them is interesting too. You'd think that Del Rey would have gotten first dibs, as they've been publishing the Acorna and PTB collaborations -- which makes it look as if they first passed on them and have now said yes.

Now THAT is interesting. It sounds like it would almost CERTAINLY* take place in the Talent universe because Barque cats are already established ship security cats (they detect minute leaks and stuff in the hull, etc.) in that Universe. However, aside from Afra, we aren't currently aware of any Talents that have actually telepathically spoken to one. (And all he got was "Mmmrrow!" from Rascal.) Of course, that could be because Barque cats are space cats, and Primes and Talents were in general more planet-bound until recently in the timeline, so generally their paths have not crossed to date.
My prediction--we'll see some great-great-great grandchildren of the Gwyn-Raven-Lyon clan. Now I'm all curious...especially as I didn't think there would be any more books in the Talent series. I wonder if this series will push the out-of-print Talent series back in print? * unless it doesn't. Technically, the Crystal Singer and Ship universes are separate, despite Ships showing up to transport Killashandra to and fro. I also have a personal, unpopular idea that the AI...AIV...I don't recall the spelling, but of Pern, you know him...might have been a shellperson. |

Discussion of Domini's idea of AIVAS as a shellperson moved to the Pern forum.

I feel sad that this thread accidentally died. Except, there's not much to add. Aside that I look forward to the Talent forum probably getting new threads once the book(s) are out.
Anyone have access to July's Locus Magazine? (Or June, or August?) It might say more about this series. (Maybe.) |

Wasn't she the cowriter on the last three Acorna books? I finally read those and was pleasantly surprised, although I didn't think much of the Petaybee sequals.

Just heard from Annie Scarborough that the Barque Cats book is being written as we speak. Tania heard some of it as a work in progress - so it's coming!

Hi, everyone. Annie Scarborough here. I joined up today and wrote a bit about Barque Cats in the thread about the Talent series, to which this is only tangentially related!

Actually, Brenda, I was the cowriter on the last 5 Acorna books, Acorna's People, Acorna's World, Acorna's Search, Acorna's Rebels and Acrona's Triumph as well as the Acorna's Children books, First Warning, Second Wave and Third Watch. Sorry you don't like the Petaybee sequels but can't please everyone.
