Default Collecting Highlight (46) - The Smallest Dragonboy chapbook

The Smallest Dragonboy, a much reprinted Pern short story, was first published in 1973, in an anthology edited by the famous Roger Elwood. The anthology was published by Rand McNally & Co. as a hardcover (1973) and four years later also as a trade paperback. Although not overly common and certainly collectible, that is not the edition I wanted to present here. The one I wanted to talk about is infinitely more collectible and expensive!

In 1982 Anne privately published the story as a chapbook under her own “label” so to speak: Dragonhold Limited (Hargreaves, page 151). The nice little book was published in an edition of a mere 200 numbered and signed copies, for Anne’s appearance as Guest of Honour at Scouse Con 1. This convention was held in Liverpool (UK) on February 13-14 of 1982. The edition is labelled (on the copyright page) as a “Special Limited Edition Convention Edition”.
It has the sentence “Limited Edtion of 200 copies” (Hargreaves) or “Limited Edition of copies” and the actual number handwritten on the copyright page.

As already mentioned in the thread that Lady Maelin posted about the 1977, signed, card she bought with the same cartoon on it, Linda Albritten is the artist who drew the “Dragon Sketch” (that’s the name it has on the copyright page) that is on the front cover as well as above the text of first chapter on page 3. The copyright given for the cartoon is 1976, so that tallies with Lady Maelin’s separate copy the print of which is dated 1977.

Even though this chapbook is extremely rare, it can be found for sale… All of a staggering full percent of the total edition is up to be snatched away! Copies of it are currently offered by John W. Knott, Jr. of Laurel, MD for US $ 250 and another by that other rare book seller, Barry Levin of Santa Monica, CA, who offers a copy for US $ 300 (neither of them mention the copy number).

Nicely done Hans! I've had a copy of this for several years. It was expensive but I had to have it. That dragon on the front is just too cute and the history of its publication was also drew me to purchase it. It was the most I'd ever paid for a McCaffrey item.
I love the story, which is probably why it's been reprinted so much, just a great little story. It has a wonderful lesson for kids to learn too. And it's because of that it's used in text books, I think, besides the wonderful writing style that Anne has.

O-mi-gosh! That's what got me started. Thank you Hans!! I have a terrible memory and couldn't remember the exact title. This is the story which was printed in my 6th grade reader. Wahoo! I am so thrilled to see it again.

Hans, Truely a wonderful Highlight...I love this story...and finding out all the background particulars of this very expencive little edition. I will love adding this to my growing collection of Highlight pages...such a wonderful collection all on its own....

I am so happy to see where my little "Dragon Joke Card/bookmark started from. Now I've been wondering how many of the cards might have been made and if they were given out at the same time...or at another date and function??? It would be lovely to find out...maybe in the future I will find the answers.

And if you want a nicer (still affordable) version... it's also in the beautiful little hardcover titled "A Gift of Dragons".

This small hardback holds the Pern short stories The Smallest Dragonboy, The Girls Wo Heard Dragons, Runner of Pern and (unique to this collection!) Ever the Twain.

Thanks for mentioning GOTU, Brenda

Ah... so many books to yet collect and so few dollars these days. The old days of having a book collecting slush fund have all but disappeared with my oldest child starting college four years ago and my second starting this year. These days I hardly have two nickles to rub together. LOL Thanks for the highlights Hans. Another copy to add to the ever growing list of books I still NEED,WANT, GOTTA HAVE! (bookjunkie)

You're welcome, bookjunkie I wish you good luck with the hunt (which is as much fun as the actual collecting)!
