Robinton Island

While searching for more info on the cover of Dragonharper by JLNye last night, I came across a reference to Robinton Island. Needless to say the possibility of a real island on earth named that caught my eye, and I started to research it. Here's what I've learned.

Robinton Island seems to be a misnomer for Roberton Island, officially known as Motuarohia Island. It is found in the Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand. It's a fairly small island, and stunningly beautiful with wooded hilly areas, a long white sand beach, and a couple of lagoons. I do think our Master Robinton would have found it just as restful as Cove Hold.

You can find it at 35°14'S 174°10'E
See it on Google Maps (and be sure to zoom in, the satellite view is quite detailed)

The Roberton name comes from a couple that tried running a farm on the island when British rule was new to the area. Here is their tale, taken from a diary of a family on vacation in the area.
Robinton Island was perhaps one of the more beautiful ones, with a long white beach, behind which two lagoons were hidden. This was also the one with the saddest tale to tell:

The Roberton family moved there to farm the land and things were going fine until Mr Roberton drowned . Mrs Roberton carried on as best she could, but in the end she had to hire two men to help. Sadly these two men didn't get on at all well with each other, and one of them in fact killed the other with a shovel during a dispute. He went back to Mrs Roberton and she told him that as the new English laws had just been adopted in the area, he would have to be put on trial according to these laws. He then panicked, killed her and her children and set the farm on fire. When the villagers in Russell saw the smoke, they went across to see what was going on. They discovered the whole sorry affair and the man was the first to be hanged under British law in NZ.
Note that they refer to the island as Robinton, but that the family is clearly named Roberton. Most everywhere else on the web refers to the island as either Roberton, or Motuarohia.

The island is partly a Scenic Reserve, with a short hiking trail and also an underwater trail for snorkelling.

The other part of the island has a few private homes. One of them could be yours, for the low low price of $4.5 million (USD).

So, should MoM start raising funds to buy this place? It would be even more fabulous than the European Headquarters that Hans and Anneli found for us!

Cheryl, this is fantastic. The first thing I noticed is that in the first picture the island is vaguely dragon-shaped (to my eyes, anyway)! I doubt we'd ever be able to come up with funds to buy it but I see no reason why we can't just appropriate it the same way we did the Amsterdam HQ!

Are you sure it's not the one on which the abominators were exiled?

It's too close to the mainland (they could swim over) and too beautiful to turn over to abominators.

Yes, Sandi, let's just appropriate it!

Shall we have "Lot One" or the whole island?
Is there a MOM flag?
I shall summon all kiwi MOMers and march upon the site and appropriate that piece of land in the name of MOM!

LOL Kibbie & I will help with the fund raising. As long as we get a place on the beach. Maybe if we all play the lotterie we can win BIG and buy the island & turn it in to a MoM resort.

We've all the gold in the MoM coffers and if need be we can always sell the boat...

Never fear, we'll think of something.

Don't pay up untill you see the white of their collars, people.

Uh...

Aren't you getting carried away here?

Maybe so, it's a convenient way to travel after all.

Hmm, this has a high Muppet Content.

That's correct.

What's coorect?

Of course, I said it was correct, didn't I.

Yes, true you did.

We take possession alright - just wave our flags and sing loudly enough, the locals will be scared into submission
