November 2005. Same time as I started trying for a baby. I though I was giving Porth a good run for her money this year, but at even at this rate, she'll still get there first!

My target is to get it finished for the UK gather in October, as I want to print off a handful of good-quality freebies to give away.

Nice to see another chapter! Oooh, and done for October? Then I'll make time to reread the whole thing again and not keep wondering who's who!

A long time ago I read a couple of fanfics (don't remember by whom) and was seriously underwhelmed. Since then I have avoided everything except for some of the poetry. Clearly I've done myself a great disservice. I decided to give your story a look and found myself hooked. I've also wondered about how the first riders managed to survive long enough to figure things out and you seem to have given a lot of thought to plausible answers. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thanks!

If you've not read them yet, Dragonchoice I and II should be next on your list, followed by Shalyn's DragonSue

I just caught up on the last two installments. Excellent as usual!

I just want to hug all the riders at the end, reassure them that usually there are a lot more eggs and a much higher percentage of them hatch successfully. But they'll soon learn for themselves.

I think I've said it before, but I just love how you managed to capture all the uncertainty there must have been with these first matings and hatchings. We're so used to the confident portrayals in later Passes, and I'd never spared a thought before as to what those first ones must have been like.

Brenda's stories are very good.

I also have a short - I don't think I posted it here - from Brekke's POV of the queen flight. It's at the AMC forum, and I've had people say they like it:

The Guilt of Forever

Kath also has several short stories that she's posted.

In the Dark Watches of the Night
Paying the Price
The Lont Winter

And, of course, Kath's lighter side:

The Weyrwoman's Diary
http://www.annemccaffreyfans.org/for...ad.php?t=10107
Mary Sue's Revenge

So, yeah, there is good fanfic out there.

Another good chapter. I'm still sad for the small clutch, and the two perfect but small dragons who didn't make it.

Kitti had made some serious alterations to the genome; as far as Sorka remembered, that one was supposed to be linked to the dragon's ability to go between, though how it worked and what it did was beyond her grasp.
I think she's sneaking in the ability to go between times here...

Well, if the gene had something to do with between abilities... I only read Dragonsblood once, and have done my best to forget it, so I forgot about the fire lizard going back in time...

The only other thing I can think of was if you meant Ruth's ability to know where and when he is.

I just don't see how, if she engineered it in, and it "transferred well", why Ruth's ability to know exactly when and where he is is so unique?

Because my clues might not actually explain Ruth?
Because he might (for values of 'might' equalling 'almost certainly') have a combination of factors involved?
Because a gene may be carried, but not necessarily expressed?

Meh. It's a hint that people can use or ignore as they want.

Yay, a big happy hatching!

I like the bronze hatching first, at the first good hatching -- setting up the superstition that a bronze first means a good hatching?

That superstition has always made sense to me -- not that it really means anything, but that people would put a lot of stock in it. Bronzes are less common making each one more special, holding prized leadership roles in the Weyr, and it's always nice to have a "special" dragon hatch first. Plus the odds are against a bronze being first because of their relative scarcity, so having beat the odds makes people feel good.

I wonder how often a gold manages to be first, and what the feeling on that is?

We've seen it happen at least once, sort of... wasn't Talina's Arwith hatched out of the egg that Jaxom returned? Though I guess with all the timing, it doesn't really count!

Seriously though Kath, that was fantastic! You did a fabulous and believable job shepherding the Weyr through it's first population expansion. And if I can't look forward to reading more, then at least I can look forward to reading the whole thing again in its entirety without any long pauses between the chapters.

Thanks, Cheryl.

Yeah, some of those waits between chapters did get rather long, didn't they?

I think I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There are so many ways I could have made it longer - showing some of the other clutches and hatchling deaths in more details, taking things through to Faranth's first gold egg, stuff like that... but really, all along I'd wanted to end things with Porth's clutch hatching. You have to draw a line somewhere, I think. The epilogue was just there to tidy up a few of the loose ends nicely, and to give the whole story more of a finished feel to it... and to show that Dragon Days is just one of the many possible First Pass stories.

Someone else gets to write the next one.

You closed it quite nicely by having that final scene take place so much later, so we could see where things had gone since we last saw them, and where they now could go. I was wondering how you were going to finish, since it would be so easy to go on, but that was a good ending.

I like them figuring out about Search dragons, and that sneaky mention of Carenath catching someone else's dragon and Sorka dealing with it.

As I'm new on the forum, I have been exploring and was delighted with this. Spent the best part of the day reading it. I loved how it explained a number of things that had become accepted by the time of "The Second Weyr." It really fits well with what Anne has written. I will definitely be reading more of your writing!

I have also just stumbled onto your writing and would like to congratulate you on a fine job. It's funny, I've heard time and again how some fanfic is not any good but so far anything I've read has been fantastic. Mind you it's all been on this site so perhaps I've been lucky.... Anywho, thanks again for a wonderful story.

Well Kath, it took me a whole afternoon to read (well I probably missed a couple of sentences here and there as I'm in the middle of cooking dinner and I had to re-log myself on again ) but overall I enjoyed it and I'll want to go back and re-read it again later on.
