Well, I've *finally* beaten the crap out of my writer's block, and CH8 is progressing nicely. I hope to get it done within a week, if you lot can wait that long.

I just found/made the time to read it, and Wow Kath! I think you've done an excellent job at portraying the original riders, the various personal challenges they'd be facing, and especially the range of reactions as they deduce what the first mating flight would likely entail and then the actual experience and aftermath.

Now I want to here more about Dave Catarel's reaction, though of course we know he turned into a rather sexy self-assured older man in Second Weyr, if I recall correctly.

I'm so glad that everyone's liked the most recent chapter! All 2500 words of it have now been added to the story over here as well now. It's been a real struggle to get through, and I was worried that I was trying to get too much worked out too easily, and too quickly. Plus, it was hard work trying to get everyone's emotions figured out in a semi-plausible way! But the alternative was dozens of pages of angst, which I don't think I could have managed. As it is, I'm quite drained! So, while you'll get to find out how Dave's dealing with things (and I agree with Cheryl that he's a rather yummy character ) it won't be a direct/parallel follow-up to the most recent chapter - I simply couldn't cope with that! - but rather bits and pieces throughout the next few.

I posted this at the NKT as well:

I think the pacing was fine in the last chapter, not too fast at all. Maybe that's because we as readers already know about mating flights and how they work. It might be different if your story was the first Pern yarn someone read, though. As you said, this doesn't mean their problems are over yet, there's the break-up with Sam for one thing, and no matter how much Ali'll tell herself she had no real choice, it'll be a while before she'll stop wishing she could have both a family outside the Weyr and her dragon.

Evil, evil woman! Writing another flight but neglecting to add the name of the winning male team!

I'm thinking it's Sean, which will make for interesting repercussions.

It's so nice to see things from a novel perspective (no pun intended- even if there's a hint there) and the whole thing of the golds all waiting to rise in quick succession has alot of suspence- rather like a rather gory detective novel- you're waiting to see who's next!

Unfortunately not!

I've probably spoilt you with the last few updates - you've had three chapters in barely more than a week! Considering it's taken me ten months to post 13 chapters, don't be surprised if the next one takes a little longer to come out.

Anyway, I have the next scene partially sketched out - it's a Pete POV at breakfast time the following day. I just have a bit of tweaking to do, getting the characters in position for maximum movement of Plot, and generally making life awkward for everyone. After that, I've still got a minimum of nine more chapters, but they'll probably grow into a few more than that as I get further in to that part of the story.

Well, it all began in a thread in the KT. Um... *looks, finds* ...this one.

At that point, I figured it'd be a mere handful of scenes. Of course, I had to set things up properly with a few hints of proddiness, get the characters into position, characterise the characters, and not make things too obvious along the way. Then, I realised that there were a lot more issues/questions that I wanted to explore, and before I knew it I was into Chapter 5 and the first queen hadn't risen yet!

I've got a route-map to guide me, but it's pretty flexible. I do know where I'm taking the story, but a few scenes don't come as easily as others, some practically write themselves, and some (like Chapter 13) just appear on their own. I do know that the story will end with Porth's eggs hatching, but there's a lot of ground to cover along the way - the obvious clutching/searching/hatching scenes, a bit of dragon-science, a bit of angst, and (hopefully) a few surprises. Once I've got the immediate repercussions out the way, that is! So, the last chapters currently consist of a couple of sentences detailing the who/where/what/when. I've got another file with snippets of info on all the characters - what they look like (if relevant), what they're like, any obvious mannerisms which Anne or I have given them. Like, Anne has Pete saying "hey" quite a lot.

Usually, the upcoming chapters are fleshed out in a bit more detail in advance, but I've been running ahead with the ones I've got over the past week or so (i.e. 10/11/12/13), so 14 is still only the bare bones right now. That's one reason for a slightly longer delay before I post again. So, how do I write them? The first thing is to go over the scenes in my head pretty thoroughly. I just put the characters in place, and play around with different settings/interactions/events. If I'm lucky, this is when a large part of the dialogue appears. If I have pen & paper/electrons to hand, I'll scribble down the rough details on paper or in a note file on my computer. That note file will eventually grow into a full chapter.

I start just by adding more details... character motivation, scenery, dialogue. What people do, how they move, and all that, generally in the present tense. I guess it helps me feel the scene better. The level of detail varies a lot, depending on how immersed I become in the scene. There are some sections which barely get much editing at all, except for tense changes... usually these are towards the end of the chapter, when I'm in full flow! So, I do have to go back over the chapter several times, adding more prose/dialogue/detail with each pass. Getting the introductory paragraph right is the hardest thing, so it really helps me to have some decent prose further in that I can work towards. There's really nothing worse than an empty page/file when you're trying to get things moving. If I really get stuck with an opening, that's when I'll start with a piece of dialogue. That's a tip my old english teacher once suggested for writing essays under pressure in exams, and it does seem to work. I think!

Anyway, then there's the problem of making sure that I've done everything I want with the scene. It has to be there for a purpose - that's why chapter 13 was a bit of a surprise, because although I had a fair idea of what might or might not have happened (and it changed between the final and previous drafts!), I didn't know it was necessary for the plot in Chapter 14 straight off. It's been particularly tricky getting the right set of circumstances in place to allow me to explore the different options for the flights. For example, I knew I wanted Chereth's flight to go pretty badly, but I wanted the riders to figure out blooding as well, and without having too many queens around at the time. A lot of scenes end up getting hacked and slashed quite a lot before I'm done with them. Once I'm more or less happy with them, they get read through in my head several times over, looking for rough spots in either the dialogue or the blocking - like (in chapter 11) Porth being on the ground one moment, and on the ridge a few paragraphs later. I still need to fix that slip-up!

So, at this point I've spent about a day or two working FULL TIME on each chapter. That's why it's taking so damn long! But then, we're over 36,000 words already...

Currently, I know I need [*counts*] at least ten more chapters. And I'd like to get it finished before Christmas! Realistically, we're at about the half-way point.

Anything else people want to know?

Not at all, as you didn't include actual physical details about what Otto was up to with those hands of his. You managed to write a sexual scene that was PG rated, I think.

I loved the new chapter. Tarrie's a nicely complicated character, I think I like reading from her POV best (of course to follow all the rest I really need to write out a cheat sheet of the original riders and dragons, it gets hard to keep them all straight). I like that you have one character who's really figured out the "proper" way that weyrfolk need to handle flights, and it makes total sense that he's a.... Lothario type.

You know, flights are infrequent enough that I bet it will take years for the riders to come to terms with the "proper" way to handle them. Hmm, maybe it'll take having enough greens around, as they seem to rise more frequently (or maybe it's just that there's so many more of them).

I'm curious now to see how the Holder attitude about all this lasciviousness going on at the Weyr develops, which I imagine would come about even more slowly than the Weyr adjustment too it, for the more slow realization about what the effect of a dragon mating flight is on the riders.

Cheryl! Get that mind out of the gutter!

:innocent:

Seriously, I'm quite pleased with myself there. The interpretation is entirely up to the reader.

Heh. I've definitely got a cheat-sheet!

I find Tarrie easiest to write, really. Sorka's very definitely Anne's character, while Tarrie's more of a blank sheet, and therefore a lot easier to get close to when I'm writing. Of course, I then have to worry about going all Mary-Sue with her... no matter how well I map out her character, I always have to make sure that I figure out "what would she do in this situation" rather than "what should she do in this situation" or, heaven help me, "what would I do in this situation"! Sorka's a lot more constrained there, and I can usually keep on the straight-and-narrow with the male characters due to the different gender... except when other strong, familiar characters try and muscle in on the story. Otto is most definitely NOT allowed to morph into F'ren, for instance.

Check your atlases, and cross-reference with the direction of Porth's flight...
