Default Latest Woodworking Project

A couple of months ago, I was working backstage on a theatre project of 'The Lady's Not For Burning', which is a play by C. Fry, based in the 15th Century. Since I re-enact that time period, I was essentially drafted in as the 'go-to' person.

I was asked halfway through the rehearsal dates as to whether I'd be able to fget my hands on a 'Rebec' (Medieval Violin, essentially) that could be used. After trying (unsucessfully) to find one that wouldn't blow our budget, I decided to make one. The pictures below show my attempt. It can be played, but not in tune, and certainly not with any semblence of continued performance. It's a prop and nothing more. But still, although it isn't really functional (although I did manage to get 'Merrily we roll along' out of it), I'm rather proud of it.

Interesting project, nice results. I can't say that I've ever heard of a Rebec before, though.

It looks great, Sara, and worthy of a performance (with or without sound)

Don't tell Mike and Tania: they'll probably want one.

I noticed the siggy too and thought "that's new". Never heard of a rebec either so learnt something new today ~ well, 2 things really. Great job at trying something different and having a go at it. You must feel rather proud of yourself to have done such a great job on such an essential prop as this is. Woohoo

Thanks guys ^_^

Like I said, it's only a prop so now that I've had one go, I'm rather tempted to try again over the summer...although i do have quite a few bits and pieces to do for re-enactment peoples, so it might have to be pushed back to the Christmas break. We'll see.

And yes, I've been using that signature for quite a while. (I've been using it as a seal on letters and such for a couple of years now. xD ) But because quite a lot of my woodworking things are fairly small, I've been used to using the four-dot-diamond instead. It was nice to put my initial on there, since LUTheatre will be using it as a prop from now on. ^_^ My little contribution. -Chuckles-

If you put a mini-bridge at the 'top' end of the fingerboard, it'll keep the strings untangled.
