A few months ago I was contacted by someone on Facebook saying that there was a possible D.R.O.P. movie/mini-series in the works. Does anyone know if this is fact or wishful thinking?

The venture with the Canadian company Copperheart still has not been officially stopped but having said that I wouldn't get my hopes up as yet.
You can find further information in the DRoP forum Alan.

It's been a long time with no news. It's possible that Copperheart plans to eventually make the movie, but it's seeming less and less likely.

Just read thru the boards on IMDB.com Says 2011, but no info; cast, plot etc.
Check it out here. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808236/ Some folks believe it will be a Dragonsdawn movie, while others believe it will be three movies (Dragonflight, Dragonquest & White Dragon)...I am okay with either, but I am pulling for the latter! And, of course, many people are miffed that Eragon was made first, considering the obvious link to this series. |

Yes I have to agree with Kugai...I'll believe it when someone put up a trailer (link) for the upcomming movie.
I don't believe it will remain a T.V. show though, perhaps a TV movie, though... IMO they would recoup more of their investment if it was a real theater movie...even a bad one would make decent money these days.

Well they'd have over 1000 buying tickets from here on MoM and NKT (with probably quite a few going for repeat watching to see if they've missed anything) so there's at least $100-150,000 going through their coffers if you also include the person's partner, children, siblings etc..etc... to start off with, then all the dvd sales, movie memorabilia and so forth. They'd make a mint with us alone

Movie(s) would be much better for everyone involved. Revenue alone would be the biggest tell. Just pattern the whole deal like LoTR. Mr. Jackson showed Hollywood how it can be done.

They'd make enough money to fund the thing if there were licensed items to purchase related to the dragonrider stories!

Absolutely! There is an abundance of items that can be made for fans. We actually have a small stuffed dragon from Erigon and How To Train A Dragon. The same could easily be done now for dragons and fire lizards!

I don't think Copperheart also has the rights to merchandising, they just have the movie rights I think.
This was one of the things that went wrong in earlier ventures and the McCaffreys had a lot of trouble to get the merchandising rights back... But essentially that's not our business.

I had also heard that the initial venture came back twisted up to resemble a Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibe...TV show wise. That was thoroughly unacceptible and was squashed appropriately. The most recent news I can find online is 2007 otherthan the imdb listing. As it has been said...I will believe it when I see it.
As an aside, how many different voice talent will be needed and who do you s'pose will be the more impotant dragons? Ramoth, Mnementh, Ruth for instance. |

Let's get things right: the former TV and film ventures all went down the drain. The TV was stopped because the director thought the producers (WB) went way too far off script (script of first episode can be had from Cheryl, via DRoP subforum and on certain conditions).
The current venture with Copperheart is, to the best of my knowledge, only for the cinema. There are no TV plans anymore. And yes, it is alright to dream. Earth would be a sad place without that ![]() ![]()

IMHO the ammount of animation needed would, cost wise, exclude it from televison, and the bigger screen of a cimema would do a Pern film more justice so lets live and dream.

I don't see why a decent script hasn't been made yet. >.> Seriously. I've read the one for TV and it made me cringe.
Ohh! It's 'script frenzy' month in April...too bad we're unallowed to write such a thing for amusement's sake. I think I did rather well with the modifications I made to the play adaptation. xD |

I'm thinking Avatar here. James Cameron did a reasonably good job with that and if you had Peter Jackson on board with experience of LoTR, bingo, it'd be one hot tamali

Just as long as they don't just run through the story and the casting. They should make the actors as close to the characters as possible. If they're just doing it because of the money it will bring, it will go down the drain immediately. I had such high hopes for Eragon, but when I saw the movie - really, did they even read the book right?! None of the actors resemble their characters, too many things were cut out, the things that were left are mostly done wrong, and so on... If they make this a Eragon spin - off, they can drop it right now. The stories are too similar already as it is.

A little off topic, but "m studying animation at university at the moment. My specialism is puppet stop motion (think of the Canterbury Tales) and it has always been my aim to one day animate the Pern series.
Would do people think of that sort of film for DROP? |

Sailor...I agree with you about the *Talent Series* making a great movie or mini series.
Lord I'd take any of Anne's stories made into a movie, but I have to admit that I would dearly love to see *The Ship WHo Sang* made into a movie...that would be incredible to see...and so easy for what the moviemakers have been up to in the last few years.

See, I always took that to mean the dragon said the same things or in the same manner or with the same strength as the rider, not that the voice was the same. Hm...so the dragons mental voice is the same as the rider's voice. Still sounds a bit schyzophrenic to me, but ya could be right.

And I cannot imagine Cameron and Jackson ever working together. Cameron doesn't do collaborations. In fact there's a reason some of his crew have t-shirts that say "You can't scare me, I work for James Cameron." He's very unpleasant. Now, if Jackson and WETA weren't tied up for the foreseeable future... As far as IMDB goes...well, let me put it this way, have they finally taken down the live-action "Last Unicorn" which was listed for YEARS where the company finally admitted the film never existed? Isn't stop-motion considered a little passe outside things like Wallace and Grommit anymore? |

A little off topic, but, Anareth, what in Eragon is similar as Star Wars? I noticed Pern immediately, and a little bit of Lord of the rings, but Star Wars?

[QUOTE=Isn't stop-motion considered a little passe outside things like Wallace and Grommit anymore?[/QUOTE]
Arrrrgh! *stab to the heart* Got me right where it hurts there! I don't think so. I think people still see the magic in it. What about Tim Burton films? Nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and then the recent hit Coraline? All stop-motion, and doesn't have to be so stylised as these examples are. The animated TV series for the BBC, The Canterbury Tales and Terry Pratchett's Truckers are good examples. I do think most people will want actors and computer animations though, and I think will be the only kind of film to really be taken seriously. Ah well, a personal project perhaps. |
