Quoted for truth! Now, I never read the kid's books, so I can't say much...and I did enjoy the movie even knowing there were many things reminiscent(sp?) of other stories. But I would expect our Ms. McCaffrey yo squash any nonsense, much as the TV series was scrapped for their attempt to bastardize it into a dragon version of Buffy.

Or as someone on TV tropes put it, "You could say Eragon is like Star Wars recycled NOT IN SPACE!"

Basically, it's Star Wars's plot in Lord of the Rings's setting with dragons borrowed from Pern only they hurt people instead of thread.

Oh I agree Anareth...I really disliked Eragon, to me there was nothing original there.

Other than there were dragons in Eragon, I don't see any other resemblance to Pern or any of Anne's writings or books...and the dragons weren't anything like a Pern dragon!!

Hmm... must have missed it. I've never noticed it before, but yeah, now that you mentioned it, it is quite similar, isn't it?
He borrowed the Impression thing from Pern (although it isn't quite the same), the Hatching, the bit where Eragon learns how to ride Saphira. Although, I must admit, I think he made quite a plot line in books 2 and 3, and he did post some interesting riddles in book 1, which are supposed to be answered in book 4 (don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him on anything. I, myself, like the books, although I was furious after noticing so many similarities with Pern. But, all in all, he's got potential. Now he just needs to think of something new to write about, or something old, but untold yet.)

I was also not a fan of Eragon, only got half way through it.

He was only about 15 years old when he wrote it though. You gotta give the kid kudos for having a best seller on his hands at such a young age.

Not even for that Sam. If his father didn't have a publishing company the book would certainly never have been published

I am always amazed (though I suppose I shouldn't be) at the number of children of rich/famous/publishing company owners who just "happen" to become famous when actually they have little or no talent other than having the "right" parents. While more talented and more deserving people languish and struggle to "get" what is handed to these children on silver (and in some cases) GOLD platters!

And he had a lot of help with the book. If you read the end of each book, there is an enormous list of people who helped him with the writing.
I guess some people are just born lucky.

Paolini, in my opinion "stole" the Ideas of some very talented writers. Blended it all together and called it his own. I still can not figure out why one of them hasn't taken him to court for plagiarism? Even the Map in the front of his book is almost exactly like the map in all of Robert Jordan's WOT books.

I didn't know that his dad published it, and you are probably right that it wouldn't have been published otherwise. Still, we may not like the book, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a hit.

Is it just me, or did Anne actually wrote a critique on the book cover for Book1?

I thought the same or similar thing. Or she wrote a congratulatory statement for his efforts. Not 100%

She wrote something praising on the cover. I remember because that was the reason I bought the book in the first place. -Nodnod-

Just an FYI in case anyone here isn't already subscribed to the other older thread about the prospective Pern movie...

and

Quote:
David Hayter, screenwriter of the first two X-Men films, has been tapped by a consortium of production companies headed by Steven Hoban's Copperheart Entertainment to bring "The Dragonriders of Pern," the long running classic science fiction/fantasy franchise to the big screen. Hayter will adapt the first novel in series: "Dragonflight" in which an army of elite warriors ride a telepathically commanded fleet of firebreathing dragons in order to defend the planet of Pern from an insidious menace.

"This property has an incredible literary heritage and a rabid fanbase," commented Hayter. "I'm really looking forward to delving into the majestic world that Anne Has created and transporting it to the screen."

Stuff like this always happens to me. I joined this forum a few days ago, having searched the internet for anything about a Pern movie. I set up a google alert months ago. This morning I got like 7 google alert hits for this topic.

Let us hope this time it comes to fruition and is of the quality we're all expecting.

No necessarily. IMO they would be foolish to stick to just American actors. There is a wealth of top shelf talent overseas!

And remember, the Xmen series has delved abroad many times.

I do hope they try and get both closed caption and audio description
What is Audio Description?

Audio Description involves the accessibility of the visual images of theater, television, movies, and other art forms for people who are blind, have low vision, or who are otherwise visually impaired. It is a narration service (provided at no additional charge to the patron) that attempts to describe what the sighted person takes for granted -- those images that a person who is blind or visually impaired formerly could only experience through the whispered asides from a sighted companion.

In theaters, in museums, and accompanying television, film, and video presentations, Audio Description is commentary and narration which guides the listener through the presentation with concise, objective descriptions of new scenes, settings, costumes, body language, and "sight gags," all slipped in between portions of dialogue or songs.

How Do I Receive the Audio Description?

•In theaters and similar venues, the user hears the audio description via a small earpiece or earphones connected to a tiny receiver.
•For live performances, a trained Audio Describer transmits the descriptions from elsewhere in the theater often using a court stenographer's mask microphone (picture right, describer holding mask mike to mouth).
•For movies, the description generally has been prerecorded and synced to the movie soundtrack (though sometimes this is done live).
•For television, the audio description is termed video description in the USA and has historically been transmitted to the user via the Second Audio Program or SAP channel on their TV or VCR, which must be capable of receiving SAP signals. Most TVs and VCRs manufactured since the early 1990s are equipped to receive SAP, which is usually activated through the MENU button on the remote. However, with the transition from analog to digital TV, things are changing. See Accessing Audio Description on Your TV.
•For videos distributed on DVD, the audio description, when available, is accessed via the DVD menu for the movie as a special feature of the Languages menu. The track can often be located simply by repeatedly pressing the Audio button on the remote.
•Some libraries distribute DVDs or VHS tapes of older movies with audio description added. Such media are also available for purchase at a few places. See the links at the bottom of Audio Described Movies.

I might be off topic, but that why I asked for the second script, and how to get done here I know of a local group who dose this, and one or more fan of Anne McCaffrey
