Default Pern book

I'm in the opening stages of planning a book on Pern. If you would like to give me feedback on the opening stages, whilst I collect the relevant books and read them, please leave your name here or pm me.

I plan to start writing the first draft of the book in about four years, after I've finished my degree (including honours). By that time, I hope to have sufficient notes and ideas to carry off a full-scale study.

Is it a book about Pern or a book that takes place on Pern?

It's a book on Pern, not a book set on Pern.

I'm only in the preliminary stages at the moment, but what do you want to know about it?

It will be a study of the books, looking first at the books in two general chapters relating to the publication history (ie. Dragonflight to The White Dragon; the subsequent books), thence in thematic chapters.

I hope to have, for example, chapters on the role of men, and of women (or just one on gender), major themes, etc. It will be, essentially, lit crit, but not abstruse and full of theory.

Have you read the existing litterary criticisms, Ghyel? The two books by Brizzi for instance?

Not yet, Hans, but I will, I will.

I've printed out a list of books and holding libraries through the Libraries Australia website. It lists books and holding libraries.

That's good Ghyle because I really think you need to read at least the Brizzi books and Roberts before you even think of putting pen to paper, so to speak.

The ones I've noted from the website are all general, excepting the Atlases and the the Dragonlovers' Guides, and The People of Pern. I'm unlikely to reference those books in any in-depth way; but the general ones, yes.

There's an occasional bibliography listed too; Roberts looks the most promising.

For computer studies, I'm doing a website that is a comparison of many dragon myths and legends. If I want to put Pern dragons in, is there anything, besides the copyright notice that I need to put in? Or is it similar to the rules for fanfics etc.?

If you just mention the phenomenon of Pern dragons you don't even need to put the copyright notice in (just observe that the term is trademarked).

If you are going to use quotes, then you should add the copyright notice.

I concur with Hans. You're doing this as a research project essentially, which means you just need to follow the normal rules of citing references. You're not publishing fanfic.

And frankly, the notices that most of us have on our Pern sites are largely a courtesy -- I don't know that we can actually be legally required to post such on a purely informational site. (But it's at your own risk if you choose not to, I'm not a lawyer!)

That depends entirely on how and where you do it.

If it's an Australian website, Australian copyright legislation covers it. That has provisions for fair usage, basically when you need to cite copyright, and when not, and how much you can copy.

Personally, I'd say if it was a number of quotations in an essay, reference it, and use the bare minimum of words to convey your meaning. You should be fine that way, and the same goes for any other text that you cite.

it's the differences between european myths, eastern dragon myths, my own dragons and Pern dragons. It concerns their looks, their behaviour, their attitude towards humans....
