The thread either side of the one from above exist at the Concept Art site, so the particular thread has been pulled.

Pity, I'd like to have seen it.

I highly doubt this particular concept art will make it into the final film At least I hope not! It's gorgeous art, but the dragons simply aren't right. At least the heads, with the horns and all.

Ok, I really don't wanna seem mean or snarky, but I'd really appreciate some posts with a bit more content than "hmmm" "ok" or "I agree"... I mean in IM that's perfectly normal, but on message boards it's nice to see some more depth I'm not saying it's gotta be an essay with every post, but personally I find that it's easier to converse with someone who posts more than a few words

Sorry. I just wrote what I was thinking. Which wasn't much at the time. It's true the dragons were not quite right, but will anyone get a perfect drawing of a pern dragon? I think not. And while those dragons were not really similar, they were still very good dragons. That's all I have to say on that matter. And I think that a Pern movie would be much appreciated by all fans, whether or not the dragons look right. Sorry again, wasn't happy today.

I have finally got a look at the art in question, they are beautiful pieces of art work, in my opinion.

It is true that they are not very Pern like in looks, but each of us has a personal concept of what the Dragons looks like. It would be impossible for the Dragons to look like what we all think that they do.

I do think that we can all put our personal ideas aside to watch and finally get to see what they put on the screen. Lets just hope that they do whatever film with respect, and intelligence. I for one am looking forward to it.......

I agree, no one will ever get a "perfect" Pernese dragon, I at least expect to see them try to follow the descriptions (no horns! ), even if the interpretation of those descriptions isn't precisely what I envision.

No spaded tails, either. Anne specifically calls them "forked".

IF there is to be a movie it can be hoped that they will contact the folks who were doing the tv show for input. Anne really helped out on getting the dragons right for that! I just wish they had managed to get it fully completed and produced. Grrr, to get to the point of hiring actors and then pull the plug! So cruel to us fans, and Anne!

The body is perhaps a bit lean, but this sculpture perhaps comes closest to the way I envision Pernese dragons ... or at least fire-lizards.

It's nice but it's got long spindly legs, which are
a) impractical, you've got to push off from the ground
and b) the front legs are supposed to be much shorter than the back ones- I think Sean mentions it- can't think of the book though!
I know that I'm no artist, but it's one thing I'm careful with, that and muscles, which I'm not very good at but try to remember!
But the rest of it's quite nice.

Rabbits are built to run and hop. Dragons' hind legs are designed to leap and the front ones are for balance on the ground.

It all depends on the structure of the skeleton. Take a look at the skeletons of some dinosaurs, parasaurolophus for example. They presumably are able to walk either on 2 or 4 legs comfortably, and their forelegs are quite small, comparatively. But because of their naturally curved spine, they're able to walk on 4 legs easily. Humans have much larger arms in comparison to legs, but because of our straighter backs and shorter backs, we're much more awkward on all fours.

Almost forgot!

When I visited Anne last August I asked her about this and she said yes, it was concept art for the movie and the artist was taking a little liberty and probably thinking it wouldn't be recognised as such As he soon found out: fat chance!

I have a black and white computer print of a marvelous pic that wasn't shown on the forum page (that was taken down so soon) but I'll have to ask Anne first if it can be shown. I must say I'm afraid she'll have to say no.

I found you guys because one piece of preproduction art showed up on Irene Gallo's blog ( she's the art director for Tor Books ) - and I started hunting for more. This can be shown 'cause it's 'legal'. It's my background screen right now.

I did read that Dan ( the artist ) wasn't that familiar with the books, I think his work was done fast and part of getting financers. I did notice that Copperheart made their announcement in May of this year, not that long ago for film. I was still getting over the shelving of the John Carter of Mars film at the time. Still not over that really...

Copperheart does have a Christmas horror flick opening, Black XMas which ought to make them a few bucks. Anyways - thought I'd drop in the 'legal' art and toss out that I don't think the Pern film is dead, but still coming up. - Jeff the hopeful.

Thanks for hunting and sharing, Jeff. Any idea if the rest that was on that bulletin board (and some of us have that downloaded) would be legal to show? Guess we should ask either Dan or Copeprheart

Thanks again! (keep hunting)

Heading back to the dinosaurs for a moment: I've often speculated on whether old Tyranosaurus wasn't a forerunner for the kangaroo? With that skeleton it would seem to make sense.

Jeff, Yes it is illustrated by Tom Kidd, and I just love his drawing my only complaints for him are that I think his Dragon wings are a bit to long...they drag on the ground and they look to much like dinosaur's for Pern dragons(in my opinion).
The book(A Gift of Dragons) can be found and bought on ebay(or several other places on the internet..for great prices by the way) and from the Sci-Fi book club for around $10.00ish, the book is a fantastic read with four small wonderful Pern stories in it. I am reading the Freedom series right I haven't gotten back into change and up date my profile yet....sorry.
I am glad to hear that you have been enjoying the members portriats that I have been drawing(colored pencils) I am looking forward to seening more of your work...especially if it has anything to do with Pern...like you I have also been enjoying it for over thirty years.

I'm reviving this topic as the artwork is being discussed anew.

And I've just followed up on something BGJeff mentioned, about the art being featured in a blog. I tracked that blog entry, from Irene Gallo, art director for Tor books.

And that lead me to this interview with Dan Milligan, the artist that did this concept art.

Enjoy!

Gharris, Lessa was always curling up with Ramoth when she was afraid or needing comfort. Ramoth would make a cradle of her paws for Lessa to sleep with her...and Lessa was often draped around Ramoth's neck in the stories.

I'm not doubting that she would, just the way that she was in that picture. It was more like a seductress than a companion.

Same here. I also saw the emotions she often feels inwardly or unknowingly portrays when she thinks no one is around, particularly in DF. You know; despair, loneliness, quiet frustration, feeling lost and kind of looking lost...vulnerability. Things she wouldn't show if others were around.
