Post Turn on the news (death of Osama Bin Laden)

Anyone still up (in the US) or already up elsewhere, turn on the news.

Apparently Osama bin Laden has been killed. Not much known yet, but I'm sure we'll learn lots more in the days to come.

Normally discussion of anything straying into the political realm is not allowed on this board, but if people can keep civil and respectful, this thread may be used.

It's such a shame and a horrible waste of lives, that have come upon us from all of the different kinds of terroist. Lets hope that a real and lasting peace will have a chance to find it's way to all of us now.

I have just seen the news here.

It would be nice to think that things will change now, but sadly there is always someone who will come along and take his place.

This could cause a new wave of violence in the Middle East.

This is good news in many ways.

But remember this,

While the man has been permanently removed from the field, the organisation he spawned still remains. This is a time to celebrate, but it is not a time to relax.

Indeed, not a time to relax. I'm glad for the closing of this chapter, but fear for what will happen in the next.

It means that the one who was responceable for setting the 9/11 attacks in motion is GONE. Emotional relief for those who lost loved in the attack is huge. As it is even for the ones that did not loose anyone.

As Ryuu says, one head of the hydra is now gone. Unfortunately, the hydra was known for regeneration. Will it change anything? We can hope, but I seriously doubt we will see the possitive changes any time soon. It all depends on how many of his top men were taken out with him, and how tired the people of the Middle East are of all the fighting and BS that has been going on for the last decade.

And also on how Americans handle this. Excessive gloating won't help.

Burying him at sea was a smart move, since it denies his supporters a commemorative site.

Yes and no, as other have said and others will say. I thought SF author John Scalzi had a good article about it. The biggest change is a psychological one, and that can definitely fuel other changes.

Here's hoping that the changes will be positive, peaceful ones.

Interesting you should say that, Rianne. I just "snitched" this from the Facebook page of a good friend of my daughter's and her boyfriend. I think it has some points to ponder:

‎"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

I think right now the U.S. is looking for anything to celebrate. The last few years have not been good ones for us. The last few weeks has been REALLY bad. So any excuse to celebrate is good. If that makes since.

This could be a double edged sword, Muslim rites say the body should be washed as soon as possible after Death. But, If the person killed was or will be considered a martyr, the body should not be washed, and if any part of the body is washed, Prayers must be said to allah to excuse their ignorance. It will have to be seen how the Radical muslims take this.

Hmm, I'm left to ponder on how this will affect us as a whole - meaning the whole world. As a psychological standpoint, for those who's friends and family died in 9/11, it will be a relief and same goes for those who live in New York, NY, it'll be closure for many people for the simple reason that as head of an organisation that was out to get the USA, he's dead and not likely to keep the organisation going. HOWEVER someone will take his place - I don't know who or when this will come about but merely looking at it from a historical viewpoint, there will always be someone who wants to take over the world, demoralise, kill, enslave 1000's of people, just to peeve the rest of the world off. Yet good does prevail, it's showing your neighbours that you're willing to help out when crisis hits and hope that they'll return the favour someday, however great or small. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

A great quote, which unfortunately isn't. MLK never said anything of the sort, someone made it up to match with current events and attributed it to him. The sentiment is still a good one but the credit must go to anonymous.

Here's another thing to consider;

With all the revolutions that have gone on in the Arab world recently, has Al Qaeda ceased to have any relevance anymore?

I seriously doubt it. Too much has changed in the recent months (even years I suspect) for an organisation such as Al Qaeda to have any relevance except among the disgruntled fringe.

Here's the real victory against OBL and his group - They no longer matter! and are consigned to the dustbin of history

As an American, I personally don't care he's dead. I'm sure he's in a Hell of his own making, but other than that, I honestly don't give a s--t.

It's too little too late. After so long, it's rather anti-climatic. It's like it doesn't mean anything any more. And now there will still be more death on both sides of the massacre. It's looking like it'll never end.

A local station affiliated with the Fox network did during their report. Their broadcast went viral on Youtube, but it was only seen by perhaps a few tens of thousands of people when it aired.

While it got attention, it wasn't quite as impressive as Katie Couric was when she began the report on CBS Evening News, which went out nationwide. She actually caught herself in the middle of blurting it out, saying "Oba--uh--Osama bin Laden is Dead!"

Perhaps it was only coincidence that a few days later, she anounced she was leaving the CBS anchor position

Since there is only one letter difference between Osama and Obama, I'd say it would be pretty easy to muff, especially if you're nervous/excited. And, I don't care how "professional" newscasters are supposed to be, they're still human and do make mistakes. I don't know her reasons, but I doubt that she'd leave for something like this! Personally, I take everything newscasters say with a LIBERAL grain of salt!
