Default Some Exciting News

"INSPIRED QUILL - Companies House Accepted"

That's the topic line of an email I received on the 5th of this month...Which means that I'm now the Managing Director of my own business. Wow. I didn't think it'd be this overwhelming, t'be honest. -Chuckles-

It’s Official!

Inspired Quill is now a Social Enterprise Publishing House. This means that we will very soon be opening the doors for the first manuscripts to be sent in, ready for the formal ‘grand opening’ in September.

And for those of you who perhaps look upon this venture with a more critical eye (that is, “How is a Publishing House meant to be a Social Enterprise? Why would anyone decide to publish with you instead of Del Ray, Penguin or Random House?”) take a look at our new and shiny Mission Statement. (It took me about six hours of pain to come up with this. xD)

"Inspired Quill is a unique publishing house focusing on indelible quality in upcoming publications from start to finish. We strive to showcase new writing talent and set a new standard in economically friendly, people-oriented publishing by providing a reliable platform for up-and-coming authors. Inspired Quill allows them to both publish their work and hone personal skills such as marketing and web commerce, with the added ability to gain knowledge of the ‘behind-the-scenes’ element of publishing. Inspired Quill also offers a way to achieve otherwise unobtainable work experience in the publishing sector for the next generation of editors and agents."

Vision Statement: The future development of Inspired Quill will seek to include both creative and nonfiction workshops to promote writing and literacy in disadvantaged schools and local community centres.

-Twitches- Now I just have to try and balance my MA Degree with this business which is launching formally in September. >.<

But on the whole...wooo!

Thanks everyone!

As you can imagine, it's a pretty big step to set up my own company, especially since I'm halfway through my Masters Degree.

I'll be concentrating on utilising electronic media as well as print on demand. I'm working on setting up pseudo EPOS system where Print on Demand can be just as effective as 'dead tree' publishing.

I have a poet on board already - we have a meeting next week...but I think the biggest challenge will be to get the first couple of authors interested and signed up.

I have however done the submissions page HERE.

We're moving servers at some point this week. Cannot wait! And yes Kath, the workshops already have me really excited. There's a head-trauma charity back in Derby (my home town) that have already expressed an interest in me doing some workshops with the patients.

I know it's cheesy, but I really do think I can make a difference.

Well, since we're just starting we obviously can't offer advances, so our royalties are rather competative (from what I've been told / have managed to see for myself).

Our royalties are split into two segments. e-publishing and paper publishing.

Both begin at 20% of the profit made from both mediums, so for an e-book sold on the website for (for sake of argument) £5, you'd be looking to get £1 per sale. A paperback book may sell at £7, but cost £2 to make, so again you'd get £1 per book sold.

For every subsequent book published and/or contract signed with IQ (each contract is 12 months, since we're here to promote new talent and realise that after that time, they may wish to go elsewhere - although we're determined our service is going to be so good they won't want to!), the author will gain an extra 5% royalty on each item sold, with a cap of 50% for the paper books and 75% on the e-books.

We also want to pay the author quarterly instead of bi-annually or annually, although admittedly we're still looking into whether that would be feasible.

Congrats, Sara, and good luck!

Just an FYI, as I was clicking around your site, the "home" and your logo are currently connecting to incorrect URL's every other page except for the home page itself; I think you've repeated the /blog at the end in the code which is causing the problem.

Instead of this:
http://www.inspired-quill.com/blog/

You have this:
http://www.inspired-quill.com/blog/blog
so you get this message:
"Sorry, this page does not exist."

Inspired Quill needs your help!

So as all of you know, Inspired Quill is now a registered publishing house. The problem is that we don’t have any funding. Don’t worry, I’m not asking for donations!

I recently worked my backside off, coming up with a pitch for the Barclay’s ‘One Small Step’ grant, which is worth £50,000!

At the moment the judges are looking through all of the entries and trying to decide which ones to shortlist, so I need YOUR help to show them that IQ has a bucket load of support!

All I ask is that you follow THIS LINK, click ‘like’ and after watching my pitch, put in a positive comment. The more comments we get, the more the judges will have to sit up and take notice of us!

I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys how much winning the competition would mean to everyone involved with IQ. (Well, other than the money, of course!) For one thing, it would mean that we could start up the subsidised workshops straight away!
