I've been trying to find ways of storing my rapidly expanding collection (I brought 4 more books today) and I came up with a temporary solution- shoeboxes! The ones my brothers have fit a mmp vertically with room for one to lie on top- I have them stacked 2 high on top of my magazine boxes, with one in front and I still need more room.

You have a beautiful office Pam, but is that in your new house or the old one? Cause it looks just like the old one did!

You're gonna have to send me a close up of your Breyer horses sometime (those are Breyer models, aren't they?) to see if we own any of the same ones!

@Pam, Very nice office...looks like you have lots of space to work in. I also would love to see your collection of Horses. I have a small one that I use on occasion for reference studies...for dragon drawings.

@Cheryl, We love the invisable shelf...but I think it looks to Twilight Zone for us to really get use to...I would keep checking on it to make sure it wasn't going to fall off the wall...LOL

Yes its a different office The unfortunate thing about having lived in the old house for only 3 years is that I wasn't tired of the paint colors yet, so tried to recreate my old office the best I could. The paint is nearly identical to the old, but slightly different, and the wallpaper border is exactly the same. The best thing about my new office is its view of the barn, even though there's nothing living in it yet besides the wild bunnies

They are breyer models. I'll try to take a pic of them one of theses days

lol, i go to a lot of book sales, and they only cost me so much like ten cents or so, so i stock up. lol. and what with such a small apartment there isnt much room for bookshelves, let alone the money to buy one, so the books take over where the clothes should go. lol. thinking of getting those under bed storage boxes for the rest of them. and Maelin's portrait is up with the books until i find a suitable place to hang it. lol

I'm using shoeboxes for now...
I'm now 1/2 a bookcase down too but my uni one's home now and I can stack things 3 deep.

We had a major book reorganisaton this weekend.
My sister ruins books (mainly Mum's and mine) and leaves them in her room.
Worried about my hardback Terry Pratchett books (she's already ruined the dustwrapper of Nightwatch) and my Anne McCaffrey hardbacks especially the DF and Dsong (she spoilt my read once Dblood by turning down the corners of the page as a book marker, she'd already been told off for ruining the spines of Sassinak, Death of Sleep and Generation Warriors), especially as she not only borrows them without asking, she goes into my room (it's a henious breach of privacy to go into hers) when I'm out to borrow them, she told me off as she couldn't find Freedom's Challenge and she'd looked in my room and everything!
Anyway, what with that and the fact that I helped Mum extract the ruins of her books from my sister's room, which, although replaceable, she didn't want to have to replace, esp. the one which was a present!
We moved the "precious" books to an unobtrusive corner of Mum's room in the bookcase I'd borrowed for my overflow.

She doesn't go to the library.
To replace the books as new (which would have to happen as you try replacing a whole series second hand- my Mum did that but over years and years) would top £100.
She'll be moving out soon! (she says, at this rate I'll have finished uni and got a place of my own before she does)
I've offered Mum my 2 Georgette Heyer books (I've brought a couple of my favourites) but she said no. Though I think her copies of those books might've escaped.
Locks are out of the question as I lend books to my brothers who are very careful. Alan removes the dustwrappers and leaves them in a safe place then replaces them. (Upside down sometimes, but that's nothing!)

Right, another (short) installment

Not many shelves in the living room, in which I'm not allowed to make shelving or put bookcase anymore...

Anyway, there are some dvd's and a few stacks of CDs in the antique cabinet which was made for a distant relative's wedding in 1898.
Next to it is a reed magazine box and a wine table holding some coffe table books... hmm, that doesn't sound quite right. But I do prefer my wine over coffee

Between the door to the hallway and the kitchen area stands an antique tea cupboard

which holds my wife's favorite tea service and houses my crystal glasses and... most of my cookbooks plus a few assorted unread paperbacks. You can see there's not much space for them (I need more shelves!)

When I was shooting the pictures the sun and the old bar mirror in the corner made a spectacle on the newly wallpapered walls and I couldn't resist a pic.

Still no pictures from the library/guestroom but... we've started moving stuff from there back to the attic, so soon...

Hans, I love the antique cabinet...that has been so exqusitly made. The crystal and the porcelian Tea service is lovely with the delicate blue pattern.
But who did the painting of the Ocean...that is beautiful???

P.S. I see that you also enjoy a garden of sorts in the house too...No such luck here, not with Teddy around...he loved to nibble my not-so-tasty house plants...so I had to give them away...sigh!!!

Maelin, the cabinet is real walnut, very expensive these days. It is exquisite indeed and holds many a family heirloom on the top shelf.
I think the tea service is Hutschenreuter, a realitively famous brand but not the most expensive.

Do you really like the painting? It's oil on canvas. I inherited it and actually find it rather dull

Re: Show us your Bookshelves!!!

Cheryl, nice rafter shelving

Everyone, wow I am impressed by your bookshelves. Such neatness and order!

When we first moved in 12 years ago we decided that we should have no books in the living room. However, in stead of books we have videos and dvds - quite a collection.

We decided that books should go in a library, so we have one room with shelves from floor to ceiling, above the door and window - everywhere. This was also our computer room and guest room. No more. Only books everywhere, two layers on the shelves or pêle-mêle, boxes on the floor and under the table. A photo could never take in all the books!

Since there is no more room in the library, books have gone into our bedrooms, stacking on the floor beside the bed, on the bed table, in a little cart, and in the new small bookcase I bought to store my most prized AMC books.

I collect SF books and films.

My husband collect books, I read them or would like to get rid of them

We have soo many books that we both dread moving. The mere thought!

One summer we took out all the books and sorted them in piles according to topics so we would be able to throw out many and find the ones we wanted when we wanted. Guess how many we threw out???

5 whole books!

Never did that again

The last move we made we had friends and family help us too...and all during the move I heard complaints about having to move all the books..."Oh lord not another box of books...you two could open a store"...and "Please get rid of the books before you move again". Well we didn't get rid of the books...only added more of them...ugg!! Guess we're going to be staying for a while, as we get no hands going up when we ask if someone wants to help us move...sigh!!!

The Rowan is my favourite!

"The name rowan is believed to derive from the Norse runa - "a charm". It was often planted outside houses to ward off witches. On May Day a spray of rowan leaves was hung over doors to repel evil, and wells dressed with rowan to keep witches away. The rowan, or mountain ash, is found commonly in Scotland, sometimes clinging to a rock face."

Anneli, You would certainly never find yourself bored in a questroom full of books...and its much better than a room with no books in it at all....

On my shelves, there is nearly every book (heaven forbid if I start collecting both h/c, p/b, languages etc) of Anne Mccaffrey, Raymond Fiest and Terry Brooks along with some Robin Hobb, Elinor Brent Dyer and Mary Grant Bruce. But I can't seem to get the hang of putting a photo up yet. So bear with me.

Right...This is my bookshelf in my Uni accommodation. (There's only the one... )

Top Shelf: Orwell / All 3 Kerner books. (Which I plan to read this term) / Gregory / One or two classics / 'The making of books' / and a few of my history books.

Second shelf: One history book to the right, and my RPing books and dice bag.

Third Shelf: Uni Folders / Poetry folder

Fourth Shelf: Assorted foodstuffs. xD Including teabags, a batch of klah I made before coming, cereal, fruit.

Yes, I also keep my walking stick like that so I can just grab it as I'm going out the door should I need to. ^^

Wheres the rest of um ...you always seem to have a lot more books than that sitting around....nice and tidy though . Good to see that you have your stick handy...no need to strain getting to it.

These are the only books I've brought along this Semester. I still need to buy my English course books. >.<
