Default 2011 - a year of natural disasters

I've just come off Facebook and after reading the comments there as well as in the papers, it looks like La Nina is having quite an effect on our world, this year. Australia's had an inland tsunami and flooding (by the way, it's raining again and it's suppose to be hot around here - sorry folks, I'm being facetious here), New Zealand copped an earthquake, Brazil had mudslides and now Japan copped an 8.9 on the ol' Richter with a tsunami that wiped out so much that I was left shaking my head. Here's why I said that.....

I heard about that too, plus they'll cop all the aftershocks as well as another tsunami and earthquake too. At least they're better prepared dealing with nuclear powerplants then the Russians were with Chenobyl, according to what I've heard on the news.

The nuclear reactor has exploded for the 2nd time.

I have seen at least a dozen "end of the world" movies that start with these kind of natural disasters. Anybody think the Mayans may have been onto something?

Of course not!
These things happen. I forget how many earthquakes there are in the year but it's at least in the hundreds of thousands. Volcanic eruptions are also pretty frequent. The earthquake in Japan is awful as was the one in Christchurch, but where they occurred is as important as when.

These things have happened in the past. It doesn't help now that rolling news often makes things seem worse than they actually are.

I think NASA has a page on the film 2012 explaining why it was a load of rubbish (and I had sooo much fun at the cinema- it was such a farce)

I was teasing Edi... sort of. I don't really think the world will end next year, but if I was a multi millionare, I'd build a bomb shelter under my house. Just in case.

At least these are Natural Disasters, as in we have no control over them. There are more than enough man-made disasters (forest fires caused by carelessness or deliberate, for example) that we could do something about!

I feel very badly for all those unfortunatel people in Japan...but they do live in that kind of area where these types of things have occured for centuries...as we do here in California. When I was a child in grammar school we were taught to hide under our school desk, to protect us from falling debree, from the *BIG ONE* that was over fifty years ago now. Some day the *BIG ONE* is going to hit us...but it won't be because the end of the world is coming... its because this old earth needs to move.

I have to agree with Edith...the movie 2012 was rubbish, just like a lot of other movies...just something to scare people silly for an hour and a half.

La Nina doesn't cause earthquakes. Plate tectonics does. If they stop, we're in trouble, because that would mean something is seriously wrong with the Earth.

Well, the Japanese are dealing with it quite well, considering what hit them. They're helping each other as well as they can, and are quite calm.

I watched the news today, with a report from a California news reporter in Japan and I was also amazed to see how outwardly clam they all were.

In Tokyo they are already trying to go about their normal days business, as best as possible...all the while with the fear of a radioactive cloud on it's way to them. I really hope it doesn't happen, as they've already been through so very much...every day seems to bring them more bad news to have to deal with.

There's something almost old testament about it all.

Only seven plagues to go and the seas will part.

I know a story about that involving a minister who goes out shooting with a poacher.
