Restoree is one of my favourite McCaffrey books. I'm a romantic at heart, and adore a good love story, especially one set in such desperate situations.
But I have always wondered why there was never a sequel to it? The rescue of Earth and the eventual defeat of the Mil seem ample writing material to me. Although Sara and Harlan's love story is done, the end of the adventure seems far from finished in my opinion. Any thoughts? |

I think that there is room for a sequel for this book, but if memory serves, I think Anne said that Restoree was a one off.

Yes, I wouldn't have thought that after all this time there ever would be a sequel. It just always seemed so incomplete to me!

Ooooh I don't think I could dare muddy McCaffrey's work with my clumsy fingers!

I couldn't remember whether it was you or Brenda and (being on a college compy) I didn't have time to go and look it up.

Maybe one day...I'm not sure I'd ever be satisfied with my own writing though. I will always want to know how Anne would have done it. Her imagination and mind for stories is too good to emulate!

I've only ever done one McCaffrey FanFic, and that was a couple of years or so ago.

The first of her books I ever read and I would have LOVED more of this system / thread of story. I thought there was ample fodder for a whole raft of back story books on the theme

Just curious if you all had read the recent posting about "Restoree" supposedly being the McCaffrey book that should be made into a movie, rather than "Dragonflight". Maybe that would make a sequel of more interest.

I was just thinking that this would be a much better project than the Pern books, for a lot of the reasons the journalist gave. I would love to see a Restoree movie adaptation. It would be much harder to screw up, and there is a lot more flexibility in the appearance of characters and environment with only one novel to deal with.

Hmmmm
There is a point to that. It certainly would be a good 'Test The Waters' type of film as well. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Nimishas Ship made into a film too. A bit more of a project than Restoree, but I think that that book would also make a good 'One Off' film.

Interesting although I'd argue that the political machinations are a bit more exciting than the girl meets boy part.
I've always had my suspicions that the inhabitants of Lothar are actually humans transported to Lothar by the Mil. They look and act in a similar manner to humans and are genetically similar enough that the skin grafts worked on Sara. It also explains why their history is only 2000 years old. A film could play with that a little. Alternatively they could go all out and make a golden age superhero type film. There are enough of those about at the moment.

As far as cheaper to make goes, the Freedom books read almost as if they were meant for the movies. And a tall, sexy blond as the main character should stir at least a little Hollywood interest.

I would agree, as long as they stop at the end of Freedom's Challenge.

As long as they dropped the relationship with her and the cat-guy. Otherwise the only people who'd go see it are people into furry porn.

Cat guy? Do you mean the Catteni? Because they are not described in any way as resembling cats, or being furry...

Yeah, the Catteni are very much /not/ cat-like. They are very human-like, with the main visible differences being that they have a grey skin tone and yellowish eyes. Not slit-pupiled, just yellowy.
Nothing like, say, Sholans. Nope. |

Well, I'm 3 chapters into the book sans-sequel, so I haven't read anything in this thread to spoil it. I had no idea Anne could be so dark!

There is a note or was a note or forward in one of the editions of this book that stated that it was a stand alone and to prove that she could write the fluff that everyone else was writing. I also believe it was something that her editors or publishers asked for at the time. What it did was give her a lot of those stay at home moms who read a lot a look at what she wrote and brought them into her fold so when she started to become big in the same type of books that the male SciFi writers were offering. At least that is how it worked for more than half my female family members who are fans.

In fact, in one of the later books Kris is trying to think of a less offensive term like 'Teni...
