Default Anne McCaffrey's House Up for Sale 2/14/2013

Hello All,

I saw sad news on Anne McCaffrey's website. Her house has been put up for sale by her children. If you are interested in learning the details of her house in Ireland, Dragonhold-Underill, Here is the realestate website listing. There are pictures of the inside of the house and parts of the 30 acre plot of land. There is also a nice brochure you can download with the house plan, square footage and the asking price and a great description of the house, when it was built and more.

Why is that sad news? I have great memories of that house and the happy times I spent there but I fully understand that it'll probably have to be sold to get each of the three kids their inheritance. You also can't expect Gigi to keep on iving in the house. There's only the three of them in their family and that's as long as her son is still at home.

I actually think 875,000 euro isn't a bad price at all. It must be one of the nicest houses in that area.

I wonder if Dragonseye is already sold...

What a gorgeous looking house! I enjoyed seeing the inside, it was a small peek into the world that Anne lived in. And I agree with Hans. It's not as though the family could probably afford or that there would even be a reason to leave it uninhabited. Anne's memory will be in the books she wrote and the time she spent with many people. I would think that anyone buying it will consider themselves very lucky to have such a beautiful place that belonged to someone like Anne.

Just read through the whole description. A heated indoor swimming pool?! What a glorious retreat, and such great exercise! I wonder if someone who knew her well could tell us if she used it often?

I am not sure why I was sad over the news. Maybe it was because I was thinking about the warm descriptions of the wonderful times Anne had with people in her house as found in the biographies and on your website, Hans. Priscilla, you are right in what you said - Anne's memory will be in her books and the time she spent with people; thank you for pointing that out! That makes me feel better! Oh, and Hans, I love your website The Dragonhold Experience. I so wish that I could have met Anne and visited Dranhold-Underhill!

Oh, we should buy it. We already have a HQ, and an island. I herewith donate €100,000 towards the price!

What a GORGEOUS house! But I could not click between the pictures to enjoy. I wonder what the family have done with all Anne's Pern memorabilia? Of course when we own the house we can keep it there!

I was wondering the same thing about all her Pern items. I suppose we are not likely to ever know. I hope they kept some of the paintings, drawings and special editions of her books.

I wish we could purchase this beautiful place! Wouldn't it make a great time share?!

A Time Share and McCaffrey museum? With the guest rooms reserved for us MoMers, to keep an eye on the house?

Should I ask Gigi?
So we can see if she will satisfy our curiosity?

Time Share - McCaffrey Museum sounds great

As for price, I'd guess we need a million. There are some things that need repair. In all my years I actually never saw the indoor swimming pool in working order, so I guess Anne won't have used it often, Cilla. Maybe when the house was new and Sis was still living with her.

Too bad about the pool. I hope the new owners repair and enjoy it!

If I had the money/investors, I'd buy it as a riding property. The cross-country course alone is a huge asset. Would make a nice riding-vacation property or for a very well-heeled show barn (I like describing an enclosed aisle-center barn with boxes as an "American" barn!) That would actually be an extremely reasonable price for a large horse property in Ireland.

It's half an hour from Dublin and that city has all you might wish, I think.

You're very near the coast and very close (within 10-15 minutes) to Greystones, Bray and Arklow for day to day shopping.

If I had the security a job there I definitely wouldn't object to a move to Ireland.

All we need if for one of us to win a lottery and buy it. It look like it would make a great weekend retreat or bed and breakfast.

Are there bed and breakfasts there? For any who don't know, a B & B is a place where you stay the night and a breakfast is served. Usually much nicer and smaller than hotels.

There's an organisation called 'Secret Ireland' which is a network of B&Bs (farmhouses, old mansions, etc) where you stay en-famille, there're no separate visitors' lounges etc.

I dunno, Lily, I wouldn't sell my mother's things, especially not so soon after she died.
As for the swimming pool - I understood that it had a fundamental structural fault, and after trying to get it fixed on several occasions, Anne just gave up on the thing. I expect the running costs are huge, and for various reasons the place needed serious re-decoration last time I saw it - but the kitchen was wonderful, and the skylight in the upstairs room was wonderful, and most of all, Anne was wonderful. She inhabited every corner of that house. That might be one reason why the kids are selling up - they must expect to see her coming around every corner.
Damn, I miss her.

She lives on in our hearts, in the remembrance of time spent with her, and through the many many hours of enjoyment and escape her books gave to us all.

It's probably for mundane and realistic reasons that they are selling the property. Reality sucks when the Taxman calls. Inheritance taxes, for instance:
Quote:
Following the Irish government's budget in 2010, the law concerning inheritance of Irish real estate property changed. Tax rates on all inheritances and gifts above the tax threshold rose from 22 percent to 25 percent. All Irish residents, and those living abroad who pay taxes, must pay the tax if they inherit real estate. Thresholds vary depending on the relationship with the deceased and whether the beneficiary has previously received gifts from the deceased. There are certain exemptions to inheritance tax, most importantly that of a surviving spouse who is entirely exempt, whatever the value of the real estate.

I was going to say, I would think Irish estate taxes are no fun whatsoever (heck, for something of that value, US estate taxes would be extortionate). A lot of heirs have to sell out real estate or other valuable properties to pay up when a loved one dies, even if they'd prefer to keep it. It's not nice, and it means that in many cases people who WANT to keep a house or other property they've inherited simply CAN'T because they can't afford the taxes, but that's the progressive tax model for you. Does not care about sentimental attachment if you're "rich" thanks to someone dying.

It would make a really, really nice place for one of the "Equitours" kind of places. And I was reading (wistfully; maybe next year) the shore excursions available for Cunard's Queen Elizabeth's cruise around Britain and Ireland--saw "Explore County Wicklow" as one of them and wondered "I wonder if that goes past Anne's old house...you would think..."

Anareth, county Wicklow is very nice but nothing goes by Anne's house. It's situated pretty secluded, one could even say hidden, on a very small, one tractor wide country lane leading to pretty much nowhere.

Figured it wouldn't, but it would be a shame to be that close and not have a peep. Though my biggest problem with Ireland would be coming home without something living. (My brother nearly bought his horse on the Connemara ride, but it was more an issue of where to board him he got home....)

According to the website origanally posted the property has either been sold by a different agency, or it'd been withdrawn.

I suppose the house is empty? I hope it and the grounds are being maintained properly. Make you cry to look at those pics, don't it?

Oh, what a lovely house. For some reason I thought it was much older than it actually is. I can understand why the kids would sell it though, it's a lot of house for 1 person and unless you're running some sort of business with the horses it's a huge waste of stables and arenas.

In the ideal world ten years or so that's something we as a family might be able to consider...

Sadly at this point in time though when we're still very early in the process and one of us is still looking to get a foot on the employment ladder.

Lovely, lovely looking place though, exactly the sort of place I would wish to live.

Doubt we would make huge use of the stables ourselves - but they wouldn't be wasted as we would have found some way to let those out to those who could make best use of the resources.

Wouldn't it be great if the house went to a fan?
