She's that desperate and the son's only 17? Certainly not a good sign.

Well when you consider they leave highschool and go onto *college* only if they want to here at 15 or so....
Higher education is not a big thing in Australia so he's probably been lying around the house for a year and showing no signs of doing anthing profitable with his life...

OMG. When you say "local" paper, Shani, just HOW local?

The reason I ask is that my SIL is desperately trying to get her son (a 17 year old) to get his act together.

Too spooky.

ROFL
Local as in from the same city as me, not the same local Paper as your SIL. Isn't she from the large city way south of here?

Not especially, actually I just thought it was funny and wanted to share.

But on another note, would any of you actually hire this boy? Is his mothers advert. something to promote him really?

If your parent did this what would your reaction be?

Honestly I don't think the ad was a good idea if she's acctually expecting anyone to really offer him a job. If it was a wake up call for him, and it works, than its money well spent. Otherwise, I really don't want to know what kind of people would be replying. Then again I am replying from here in the suburbs USA. Perhaps in your area there are some good hearted folks looking for someone to put to work and willing to make the effort that such a reality check would take.

So what are you saying??? That a person is considered an adult, to be self supporting, at age 15 ??

Wow.

In the US, a 15 year old is still a child. Parents are required to support their kids until the kid is 18 years old.

After that, they can boot the kid out, if such is their nature. But 15??

Usually the kids go onto higher education, simply get jobs or Aprenticeships, unfortunately a sad number decide they don't want the hassle and survive on welfare (which isn't a bad sum over here) either moving out and sharing accomodation or just staying home and making nothing of themselves as this boy seems bent on doing.

I think that there is a number of younger people in every country that have no ambition to do anything for themselves with their lives.

That is so sad, that they have nothing that they want to do, bad enough to get themselves up off of the couch and go to work.

Maybe as parents we have become to soft on our children. When I was younger, I couldn't wait to leave home and have a life of my own. To start my own adventures, and to do things I wanted to do, without my parents there to do it for me.

I loved my parents, but I wanted to grow up and make them proud of me and what I had done in my life for myself, and my own family. Maybe that is the problem, they have no pride of accomplishment, in there own lives. Perhaps we have failed to teach that to them.

I've certainly changed from the layabout that I was. It took me the experience of getting through technical college to do so, and now I am motivated to achieve something with my life.

It was pretty funny, all right, Shani! I agree with you! Have a 16-year-old who may end up like that chap, as he's doing well in subjects he likes and seems happy to leave his other grades in the cellar!! Laughs and says he guesses he is lazy. Think he hasn't yet realized it's not a funny thing to admit to being lazy and not thinking about doing anything about it! It took me awhile when I was young to realize that no matter WHAT i was going to do, I couldn't be lazy about it and get anything accomplished! After I got it and dug in and dealt with things, I did lots better! Difficult to know what will engage a young person like that one. Think they need a "cause" to stir them up and get them going!

What that kid needs is a good kick in the backside. Putting him out to the curb just might do it.

Ok, that said I've held a job, or at least been out looking for a job when unemployed since I was 17. I've even held two jobs at once a couple of times. I get frustrated when I see younger (teen and 20 something) co-workers who think it is not important to show up for work, or who waste everybodies time when they do show up.

Eh. Honestly, if they want us to take care of ourselves, then school should skip most of what they teach now, as it's 99% irrelevant anyway, and stick to important things, like how to change car registrations, what insurance forms mean, filing your tax returns, official changes of residence, etc. Heck, I'm ten years older than this kid and probably have more years of education than he's been alive, and I haven't got the faintest idea how to deal with any of this nonsense. You can't kick them to the curb until they know how all of these things are supposed to work.

Actually as far as the Aus govt is concerned, parents are financially (in some respects, eg education...) responsible for their kids until they are 25, or unless the said kid has held a job for a certain period and earned over a certain amount.

As for leaving home, kids can legally leave home at any age......but now, in queensland at least, are required by law to stay at school until 18 years of age or be working or undergoing some other form of education (eg traineeship, apprenticeship etc). This is a relatively new policy and I don't know that it will do any good.

My 18 year old would not be entitled to what used to be called the 'dole' here because she still lives at home and our combined income (although not being a great amount) is above the threshhold which I think is something like...... maybe $30,000? (hm it may be around $50,000, the threshhold that is)........ been a while since I looked into it but that is more or less the way it is. Either way she would not be entitled to any 'welfare' payments.

Both my sister and brother did exactly the same thing as this 17 y.o. but my sister took more then 3 years to get her act together by travelling up and down the east coast before she finished her VCE(year11/12 for those of you who don't know) and now resides in USA as a supervisor. My brother now has a job too so eventually (maybe, possibly) this kid will grow up and get a life.
