All the Rest One-offs, romances, fantasy novellas, short stories... If it's not in any of the above series - or it crosses the realms of multiple series - come discuss it here! |

This weekend I'm going upstate with my family and there won't be any computer/Internet up there (oh horrors!) so I'll need a good book to keep myself occupied and sane. Of course, I'm leaning towards something McCaffrey since I'm not even close to finishing all of her series yet. My question is, what? I've already read Pern, Brainship, and am finishing up Tallent/Pegasus. So anyone want to reccomend what series I should start on next? Thanks.

Yeah, I was thinking about that one actually, either that or Acorna. Niether have gotten the best reviews, though I'd say people seem to like Crystal Singer better.

I'd recommend Doona and Planet Pirates/Dinosaur Planet books. I'm currently reading those.

Acorna on the other hand, doesn't appeal to a lot of us as it's so very clearly written for a young adult audience.

I didn't have problems with the order, btw, as I'm easily with in media res from The Odyssey--the fact that The Death of Sleep looks back, and fills in the story up towards the end of the first book, didn't phase me. I wasn't so enchanted with the final book. It read as too confused and rushed, with the splitting into the various subplots, and the structure wasn't as skillfully handled as it could have been. |

yeah, I'd've loved to see more about the bits inbetween-Sassinak could've made a whole mini series all by itself! but even so it was good-tho I admit I read that 1 AFTER the Death of Sleep- It was a post exam treat last winter!

Edith, if you really enjoyed Sassinak, then you should try more by Elizabeth Moon as that book really bears her stamp. I'd suggest starting with the Heris Serrano/Esmay Suiza books, which are most like Sassinak:
Hunting Party Sporting Chance Winning Colors Once a Hero Rules of Engagement Change of Command Against the Odds

I'll do the same as well, since I, too, really enjoyed Sassinak. Any particular titles in particular, that you recommend starting with?

I've read 1 Elizabeth Moon-tho I can't remember what it was called-it was a one off I think about an elderly lady who refuses to leave when her colony is evicted and wanders around alone-so the thinks for a while-on the planet. She ends up being nest guardian to a group of aliens. I'm on the look out for more. It was a refreshing change.

Sassinak is definately my favourite book by itself, followed by Restoree.
CS is much, much better than Acorna. I only read the Acorna series because they were tho only ones I HADN'T read yet. Other Elizabeth Moon ones that are good are the Vatta's War series: Trading in Danger and Moving Target - unfortunately both are published under other names...I think one is also calle Marque and Reprisal but I don't know about the other. But they aren't as good as the ones already mentioned. |

Edith - you read Remnant Population, which is a great book! It's a one-off, no others are in series with it.
