Maybe you can find a tutor that can help out?

For the speaking class she does not need a tutor. Her problem with the speaking class is the teacher requires out lines. Kibby does not do out lines. She will just have to suck it up and do out lines when she takes the class.

The college provides free tutoring for those who need it, both in person and on line.

Remember the old cowboy movies where they had to "check" their guns before coming into town? I think that's what people with Smartphones should have to do when they go to a party. There is nothing more rude than a table full of people in their own little world absorbed in their emails/Facebook/tweets, etc. instead of actually talking to each other. The sad part is it seems to be completely socially acceptable.

EEEKKKK! I just got my birthday present, a day early, a brand new computer. I WON'T HAVE TO SHARE WITH KIBBY!

It is a Toshiba. The only thing wrong with it is that it has Windows 8. I hate windows 8. I will get use to it.

The entire concept of college "kids" being driven to college is totally alien to me. Heck, most third graders here get themselves to school on their own! Certainly, if the kid has some sort of disability things are naturally different, but geez!

Kibby does not have a drivers permit yet. College is a 30 min. drive, where we live there are no buses, so she has to be driven to college.

Bus? What's a bus? Oh, wait! I remember! There's some sort of public transportation van/bus down in Houston (MO) for old folks. They call it a bus. No, we don't have those here.

And yes, Houston,Texas is in Missouri. Houston is the county seat of Texas county, which is the biggest county in Missouri. Missouri also has California, Louisiana, Versailles, Mexico, and even Lebanon.

But a college-age young person who doesn't drive, while a bit unusual, isn't as uncommon as you might think. My nephew, who will be 17 in November, doesn't drive. He's mildly autistic, and sortof over concentrates, when they've tried to teach him. Sees a road sign and focuses on it, to the exclusion of everything else.

And public transportation is something that's mostly found in the cities.

Exactly. If I wanted to get a bus I would have to walk about 4 miles. Even then the buses do not necessarily go where you want/need to. I don't exactly live way out in the country either.

Houston is 15 miles from my house. Rolla is 35. No busses, anyway. Springfield is about 100. Don't know about bus service there. Think I remember seeing one. St. Louis is overf100 miles inthe other direction. They have busses.

Right now, I'm in Rock Springs, Wyoming. 19 hours on the road yesteday got us here to see the yooungest son and his family. So i'm posting on my tablet. Love my new Bluetooth keyboard. Hate the touchscreen keyboard.

This is one of the problems with homeschool, no free drivers Ed. For Kibby to take drivers Ed it would cost 400 dollars. She has a good book she is studying and we are getting her on the road driving (she has a learners permit). When she turns 19 she can get her permit without having to take drivers Ed. Then we still have to be able to afford the insurance.

Once she gets to the college she can take a bus to any where she wants to go, which is what she will have to do once she gets a job.

Good luck to Kibby. Driver's licences are dirt cheap there compared to here. 2500 euros / $ 3000 is quite normal, and even if a parent teaches you to drive, you still have to take driver's ed classes and pass a written exam as well as the practical. And the parent who wants to teach their kid has to pass the practical driving exam again to get a teaching licence, at something like 400 bucks. After the practical, you get a provisionary licence for two years, and once that's completed you'll have to take additional classes in economical and safe driving, and then you get your standard licence. That's one reason why I didn't get my licence until I was 35.

I suppose riding a bike isn't an option for Kibby?

This Saturday the football team from the school (university) my husband attended is playing the team of the school our son went to and we are going! It's being played at Giant's stadium, not a bad drive from where our son lives in Stamford. Jeff has never seen "his" team in person because when he was a student all the tickets for the stadium went to alumni. I hope the weather will be good!

We went to Flaming Gorge Monday. It got its name from the red sandstone of the canyon. We drove for about 30or 40 miles and were out of Wyoming and into Utah. Took lots of pictures which I'll post to Photobucket when I get home. Besides the canyon reservoir, it was basically miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. Sagebrush, mountains, canyons. Repeat.

Oh, and once we saw antelope.

Saturday we're going to Jackson Hole. Lots more photo ops.

We went to Utah years ago with the kids. Flaming Gorge was amazing but for someone (like me) who is terrified of heights the whole Utah/mountain roads thing was not much fun. It always seemed like the sheer drops along the road were on my side of the car and the guardrails (if there were any) were much too flimsy.

Thanks, I'm sure we'll have fun. And no matter which team wins it's still "in the family".

Tomorrow Jeff and I are driving up to Bradley airport to pick up a friend who is dropping off a rental car there. She's been here nearly 6 months taking care of her parents who still live in their home and are 96 and 99. Even though Sue is married and she and Jim have a business out in Colorado she's decided that she cannot find honest, trustworthy caregivers for her parents and she is going to have to stay here. Her father refuses to go in an assisted living home so they are basically stuck. Both her parents are still fairly healthy and from what Sue says as cantankerous as old mules. Sue is their only child. Really, it is an untenable situation as far as I'm concerned and one Jeff & I would never put our kids in. Ah yes. The reason for the airport drop off is Sue has finally bought a used car. I don't know what to say. Children should be loyal and caring for their parents but somehow this doesn't seem right to me.

It does sound like the parents are taking advantage of their daughter. The daughter is allowing it to happen. If the parents are in good health do they really need her? At some point the daughter is going to have to put her family ahead of her parents.

Lynchburg is to far to ride a bike to and it would mean her riding down a busy 4 lane road. I would not want her trying ride down the highway. Only way she can get to college is to be driven.

You are right, the parents are taking advantage and Sue is letting it happen. Her parents are in reasonable health and still in sound minds (if very difficult), but they need their meals prepared and someone has to shop for them and take them to Dr. appointments. Sue is able to be flexible because she had no children herself and her husband can run their business by himself even though I am sure he's not too happy about it. They did have caregivers but I understand that some things got stolen and various different people just did not do a good job. So, their choice I guess. It could be several years at this point.

It sounds like riding a bike would not be an option. Busy streets are no place to be riding a bike' especially if you also have to have a backpack with books, laptop, etc. If it rains you would be in trouble, and what if it was nice weather in the morning and a storm came up at noon? It sounds like she needs a ride in order to get to and from quickly enough to be able to do homework, etc.

Kibby is not an experienced bike rider. When she was 9 she broke her arm riding since then she has not like riding on a gravel road, which is what had until we move in with Mom and there is not where to ride to. Living in the country has its advantage and disadvantages, one of which is narrow 2 lane country road.

Oh, that's too bad. I hope Kibby can get her licence quickly, as well as a car. Otherwise she'll just remain a child (especially in your eyes as a mother), even if legally adult.

For the most part Kibby is doing well in college. She got 100s on the first two papers she has turned in. The two classes she thought she would HATE she LOVES. Intro to Sociology and History of Art Appreciation.

The class she thought she would love, Archery, she is having problems. The college had to replace the teacher at the last minute and had never shot a bow before the first class. She has no idea what she is doing. She could not even tell Kibby which bow was for left handers. She will tell one group to shoot before the first group is out of the way. I suggested she, along with others in her class, talk to the dean of student affairs.

Pretty pups. Looks like they're waiting to figure out what they might get away with next.

Weve been in western Wyoming all week. It's been as high as the low 90s, but with rain showers only 1 evening, it's been pretty dry. I've found out that this is high plains country. Rock springs is relatively low, with mountains all around, but its elevation is still over 6500 feet. Makes quite a diffeerence in the way you perceive temperature.

Diana Nyad completed her swim from Cuba to Florida without flippers or a shark cage. She's 64, three years older than me. I think this is impressive!

Actually they're pretty good overall. And they were hoping to come with me.

Our AC is out. It is 81 degrees in the house and hotter outside. Maybe a thunderstorm will come up and cool everything off.

Your pups are beautiful, Kat.

Not sure I mentioned it here or not, we ended up with a new dog. She belonged to my 5 year old niece's father, who kept her in a small kitchen. He never took her outside or cleaned up after her. Someone reported it to animal control, he was given 24 hours to find her a home. We did not want Emmi to loose her, so we agreed to keep her. She is very sweet and loving and seems happy to be outside. For now we keeping her chained up most of the time, only letting her loose when we can watch her. She has not really chased the cats, they have scratched her a few times. She does try to play with the goat, but backs off when he flips his horns around. The other three dogs do not like her.
