Default Defunct script for Pern TV

I have the first draft script for the defunct TV pilot episode of The Dragonriders of Pern! I am working on beating my printer's scan feeder software into submission so that I can easily make a PDF of it to share with the generous folk that helped me be able to bid high enough to win it.

In the mean time, I thought I'd start teasing...I mean sharing my reactions to it as I read it. Before I start on that, I want to take you through a bit of the history of the Pern TV show, so that we can see where this script fits in. (For fuller details, visit my Pern TV News page on Sariel's Guide to Pern).

In late 1999, ZyntoPics partnered with Alliance-Atlantis was in the beginning stages of working on a TV series based on the Pern books. Some work was done on it, but as of July 2000 the partnership with Alliance-Atlantis was dissolved and that work therefore scrapped.

In late 2000, Ron Moore approached the McCaffreys/ZyntoPics about writing a script for the show, and in early 2001 the WB channel decided to produce it. Then in by early April 2001, just before the pilot was actually going to start filming, the plug was pulled on the show. Reportedly Ron Moore walked away from the project at that point because of script changes requested by the network.

The script I have is stated to be the first draft written by Ron Moore and is dated December 15, 2000. So this is before the news broke that Ron Moore was working on it, and before the WB had joined the project and started to make any changes to it. This is how Ron Moore envisioned Pern adapted for television.

I am trying to read the script with an open mind, knowing that to adapt a written work for the small or large screen requires adaptations -- some for the format of the medium and some to give it broad enough appeal to build a sizable enough audience to keep the show on the air. I expect there to be changes, how can there not be? But the fact that I want to take this script, roll it up, and slap Ron upside the head with it, having read just a few pages...well it's not good.

I used to think it was fortuitous that Ron Moore walked away from this project, allowing him to become one of the geniuses behind the new Battlestar Galactica series. Now I'm thinking it's doubly fortuitous, because even in original form, before the tweaks wanted by the network, his vision for Pern had such fundamental changes that fans of the books would be aghast. Admittedly that's not a wholly fair judgement since I haven't finished reading it yet. Perhaps my view will change, once I finish and have time to more properly digest it. We shall see.

In the meantime, I'm going to start chronicling my reactions to the script page by page as I read it.

Page 1

The opening is cool...we are to see a view of space, zoom in on a star then a planet and it becomes quickly clear that this is not earth, it's PERN! Yay! Then we zoom further in to Ruatha Hold. The description of the hold seems okay, mostly, but the mention of desert hills around Ruatha has me feel twitchy. As does the crowd of people on the ramparts just before the sun rises. Lessa and two others separate from this crowd to talk amongst themselves. The description of Lessa is fine for the most part, though the dark reddish hair details gets a twitch as well.

Page 2

Kylara is a fellow drudge, a few years older than Lessa, and clearly born to drudgery unlike Lessa. Jaxom, in his mid-teens, is also a drudge. *sigh* Maybe these changes will make sense later on, for now they are startling. The three discuss the coming Search dragons, which is what has brought out the crowd of folks.

Page 3
We meet Lord Goran (in his 50s) and his son Thrax (in his 20s). They're not happy about Search.

Page 4
Goran seems to have a plan to end the power wielded by Benden Weyr, and councils Thrax to patience.

Page 5
Lessa talks about how lovely Ruatha used to be, while her friends try to shush her. Clearly they know the secret of her parentage. Lessa vows deadly revenge on Goran. Dawn breaks and from the sun five specks are seen flying from the sun towards Ruatha.

Page 6
Jaxom announces the specks to be the Dragonriders, and we fade out while they are still tiny specks in the distance. I guess they wanted to stretch their wings rather than simply travelling between...

Now we see F'lar mounted on bronze Mnementh. Whew, no unnecessary name or color changes. He's wearing a clear visor...not sure what that's made of. And he's holding reins. Reins! And he steers with them.

(Should I mention that reins was in all caps at first, and the leg of the R was mostly missing so it looked like PEINS, which my brain rearranged into another word at first? It was especially bad as the whole phrase was "F'lar pulls the PEINS over..." and I'm thinking he's steering Mnementh with what?!)

Goran and his hired goons posture in the courtyard. Mnementh lands and kicks dust up over them all. F'lar slides off and Mmenenth leaves in a swirl of dust. It's all manly-men posturing and much dust.

Page 9
Goran and his men are still choking on dust, F'nor walks out through the dust cloud to stand with his brother. A bit later the three other riders come stand behind them. F'lar says the ritual words of search, which apparently he's had cause to say many times before (Why Nemorth, who know you were so prolific?). The dragons get all indignant about Thrax calling them beasts.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that the dragonrider names are consistently spelled with a capital letter after the apostrophe? I'm trying not to let it drive me batty. And mostly the names are in all caps so it's not an issue, but when they do appear regular...*gah*

Lessa and company linger over the scene they witnessed from on high. Jaxom wants to be a rider and Kylara is awed by the beauty of the dragons. Lessa quotes some timely trite saying of her father and the drudges finally go inside, to work presumably.

Page 11
Breakfast is served. Goran asks for news of the High Reaches and F'lar says mentions the weather there, information that came by way of a female rider who was there a week ago. Buwha? I wonder what color said rider's dragon is?...

Kylara flirts with wingmember T'bor.

Oh god, please tell me this is a typo. There's a reference to "klagh". What is this, a Klingon drink?

Plot, plot, plot. See Goran insult F'lar. See F'lar reach for his knife. Plot Lessa, plot.

Page 14
Goran continues his insulting exposition explaining how Search works from a Holder's point of view, while F'lar draws his knife. Aww, Mnementh bugles and snaps F'lar out of it, and the whole dining hall watches him stab some food instead of Goran.

Lessa's back in the kitchen and it seems her two bestest buddies Kylara and Jaxom have some awareness of her abilities.

F'lar and F'nor are wandering the halls discussing what happened -- Mnementh felt a presence....a girl...with THE GIFT! *dun dun dunnnnnnnn*

Seriously, The Gift? *head in hands* Yeah, yeah, makes more sense to the uninformed tv audience, I'm sure.

More discussion of the The Gift. They're sure that it's a member of the Ruathan family that Goran didn't manage to kill. And mention that no dragonwoman has had it for five centuries, not since Moreta. Who apparently was a shrew.

(Moreta, five centuries ago? During the 7th Interval?)

We see the wing members on search thorugh homes, soldiers accompanying them. D'wer and B'irto are the two not previously named.

Page 18
Now we see F'lar search, but he gets to search the more affluent members of the Hold. Goran's plan to thwart Search is apparent. Only cruddy looking women have been seen by the wing members, and the ones seen by F'lar are all too old (50 and over). Except for the wives of Thrax. All six of them. Oh, so cunning is Goran.

The dragons all begin to cry...I mean keen. The riders are stunned.

Page 19
Goran is smug, he knows why the caged bird sings...I mean why the dragons are crying. F'lar sees something and goes pale.

It's... it's...

Lytol! How you doin' old friend? (that was me asking, not F'lar or Goran)

F'lar's all verklempt and the dragons cry some more. Bunch of sissies.

Page 21
Lytol's playing it all cool. F'lar is worried.
Lessa and her cohorts provide exposition explaining who Lytol is. And Kylara at least beleaves that riders get linked to their dragons in a dark ceremony, linked by body and soul. And Lytol now has no soul.

Oh god, it wasn't typo. It really has been renamed klagh. Excuse me, I seem to have a klagh in my throat.

Page 29
F'nor is apparently clairvoyant. He tells the kitchen girls that of the two dozen eggs on the sands, ten are green, six are blue, four are brown, three are bronze...and one is golden. Meanwhile Lessa plays mind games with Thrax who's escorting F'nor.

Page 30
F'nor declares his intent to take each girl by the hand and declare his undying love...I mean let his dragon look into their hearts. Do dragons have sonar like dolphins now?

Thrax has his knife out and is about to stab F'nor, who's warned just in time by puppetmaster Lessa just as F'nor takes her hand.

Page 31
F'nor and Thrax commence with a down and dirty swordfight. Just as F'nor is poised to kill Thrax, Lytol crashes the party and is poised to kill F'nor just as F'lar and Goran stroll in.

Perfect time to fade to commercial, no?

The men all do their manly men posturing as they sort out what's going on. Lytol mentions not being under F'lar's command anymore, so I guess F'lar has been Weyrleader for quite some time. Jaxom takes a punch like a girl from Thrax for daring to say who started the fight.

Page 33
F'lar says Goran can't execute F'nor on a whim. There are laws, man! (You have to have a trial, and lawyers, and it takes weeks, and it's just not worth the hassle man.) Goran doesn't back down so F'lar threatens to burn Ruatha to the ground if his brother is killed. I wonder what law that follows?

Lytol says F'lar is too much of a sissy....I mean to honorable to carry out his threat, but Goran backs down and tells the riders the get the hell out of his hold.

Lytol is telling Goran and Thrax about the Girl with the Gift™. Meanwhile the dragonriders are talking candidates. T'bor mentions his candidate and F'nor rightly guesses how she was chosen but no one objects.

Trippy scene flipping back and forth between Lytol and F'lar and their separate musings on the Girl with the Gift™. Lytol very honorably suggests finding and killing her before F'lar makes off with her. The riders leave, but plan to come back after dark.

Thrax of course tries to kiss Lessa after saying how much he'll love watching her die. But Lessa knows the knee-to-crotch manuever. Thrax has the guards hold her down on the mattress she'd been hiding under. Clearly we're setting up for a rape scene when *triumphant music* F'lar and F'nor burst upon the scene.

Knife and sword fight ensues. F'nor takes on two guards, F'lar takes on Thrax, and Lessa takes on the final guard. Warrior woman Lessa kills her guard, then another which saves F'nor from an untimely end. F'nor kills the last guard.

Page 42
F'lar kills Thrax. People stand around wondering what to do now, cause they're all stupid like that, and finally Goran and Lytol show up with some more soldiers. Goran's all sad about his son and all, and tells the riders to take Lessa away. Goran stops F'lar and asks if he has a son. *cue melancholy music* Goran waxes poetical about a father not supposed to see his son cross the rainbow bridge first.

Page 43
Goran lets them go, but his eyes, wow his eyes vow revenge.

Lessa is pissed that the dragonriders want to take her away. F'nor tries to edumacate her as to the honor they're bestowing upon her, the love unlike anything she's ever known. He waxes poetic about the intimate bond between rider and dragon and Lessa looks at him like he's nuts.

Page 45
Lessa gives Jaxom a big ol' bear hug and says she'll be back for him. Mnementh bursts out of the rising sun. Like an alien from a person's chest, I think. I guess between has been replaced by bursting from the sun. Hmmm, freezing cold or searing heat, not sure which is better.

Scenes of people on dragons. Who apparently look like horses jumping things as they rise up and level out. No, seriously, I didn't make that bit up.

Oooooh, between is mentioned now, I guess it is real in this Perniverse. F'lar warns Lessa, by which I mean he says we're going between and she says huh and he says just hang on and tells her nothing useful. And it really is reverse between, everything goes to white instead of black. While they're in the white of between we hear nothing but their heartbeats *lub dub, lub dub*.

And then they all die. No no, I jest. They pop out of between, only they're not in sunlight anymore but moonlight, and they're not over Ruatha but somewhere entirely different. It's totally trippy man!

Benden Weyr is located in a butte, alone on a vast plane. Like Devil's Tower in Close Encounters (it really says that, I swear). Probably also like the actual Devil's Tower which is a volcanic plug which is what remains when the rest of an extinct volcano erodes away. Oh, but wait, there's a caldera in the top. I can hear my geology professors weeping, a caldera in the top of a volcanic plug.

F'lar guides Mnement down with the penis reins. Lessa's flipped out about the day to night change and F'lar explains time zones to her.

Lessa and Kylara are unexpectedly reuinited, and Kylara brightly explains that she's going to be a rider. Kylara is marshalled off by T'bor, and Lessa by F'lar. The audience marvels over the smooth tunnel walls, cut by machinery not hand. F'lar takes Lessa into his spartan bachelor pad, and touches a panel on the wall that lights up.

I'm going to pause here before I turn the page and discover if this is something to do with glows (please, please, please) or technology from the ancients built into the Weyrs (no, no no!).

Really, do I have to turn the page?

Sorry Cheryl, but in the interest of research and discovery for us here at MoM you DO have to turn the page.

I can't believe what you've been reading! One thing for sure, this was needed to help soften the blow when/if a movie is ever made!

*huge sigh* I was right to be fearful. Lessa's all impressed by the high-tech lights. F'lar tells her there's clothes and a bath and wanders off. Lessa's all mad until she catches sight of her scary reflection. *cue overly-long erotic bathing scene*

Page 50
Lessa's all pretty now as she sleeps in bed. F'lar gets his creep on and watches her. She wakes up and is thrilled with the attention but won't let on of course. F'lar gives us some expository dialogue about the history of Pern: Many centuries the paradise of Pern was settled. After a few centuries they abandoned their spaceships, and then the Red Star appeared one morning. It got closer and closer and... BOO! Ha, ha, I scared you! Erm, I mean, Flar says it got closer until....

....death began to rain down, killing people by the ten thousands. So you know, what could they do? The didn't have spaceships anymore, so they created dragons. I mean, c'mon, what would you do in their place?

So for three centuries the thread fell and the dragons protected everyone, and then one morning *poof* it stopped. Time went by, dragons and riders became a laughingstock and dwindled to just one Weyr. And now the red star's coming back.

(That's right, the First Pass lasted for 300 years, and now the Second Pass is about to begin.)

So, you know, we need you to Imprint the gold dragon...

Page 52
...and rule the Weyr. Didn't I mention that that's what I wanted you for? *bats eyelashes* Lessa's all shocked but the dragons are keening cause it's hatching time, baby! F'lar tosses her a green ceremonial dress (yes green, the color of bad luck on Pern).

The hatching cavern, carved out by machinery, has a convenient hole in the ceiling to let the moonlight in. The regular eggs are 3 feet long, and the gold in it's own special place is 4.5 feet long. 30 young men and women ring the eggs, looking nervous. And probably sleeping since it's still night time despite Lessa's sleep.

A teenaged boy gets turned into a bloody mess by a blue dragon. Cause he was stupid. Lessa and Kylara are the only gold candidates bold enough to not back away from the gold hatchling. Lessa watches another boy and another blue dragon gaze into each others eyes with a love like no other. *romantic music*

The gold screeches, demands attention. We see the two candidates through her prismatic eyes. *trippy mushroom music*

The dragon trips and flaps her wings and Kylara gets all scared and steps back, and bright Lessa stares into the dragons eyes *swelling romantic music* and falls in love. Lessa scratches her head like a puppy and the dragon coos like a baby.

Her....name...is....ClamBroth.... No, I kid, it just rhymes with ClamBroth. It's really Ramoth, which is good. The crowd of course goes wild when Lessa announces this, just like when a sports game is won in triple overtime. Seriously.

F'lar and F'nor scream and do a happy dance like sorority sisters. T'bor practices his golf clap. Kylara gives Lessa and evil look. Methinks she'll be troublesome in the future, yes? Lessa is all teary eyed and looks around for those two hot dragonrider brothers, who are still squeeing like little girls and hugging each other.

Looks go back and forth amongst the trio, clearly setting up a love triangle which the audience will be tortured with for many episodes to come. Perhaps for seasons. Can you just hear how thrilled I am by that notion, why it's sheer Hollywood brilliance.

Page 55
Pan away from the geologically impossible caldera within the volcanic plug to the red star. It's a tiny bit bigger, but still smaller than the fist size that F'lar said it will be when Thread returns.

*Takes a bow* I take credit for making it funny, since it took itself very seriously. I know my commentary/interpretation is going to be hard to sort out from the actual script, unless of course you have the actual script in hand. Which you don't. Yet.

The thing is, this was the first draft, what was accepted (presumably) by Anne. This is long before the plug was pulled, which was not done by Anne anyhow.

I just had to draw it out a little. I also had a few delays for phone calls, and for my husband deciding he had to interupt me to explain the wonder of the internet despite knowing what I was up to.

Indeed this helps soften the blow for whatever cockamamie ideas/changes are made if/when the movie is made. If I sit back and analyze things, some of the notable changes make sense to cast things into more traditional plot patterns. The friend-turned-enemy, the love triangle. Between being white since fading to true black on tv is something generally avoided in the middle of scenes. I'm sure it would have make sense in time that Jaxom was already born, that Goran was left alive. Lytol would mend his traitorous ways.

For an audience unfamiliar with the book, this could be pretty cool. I'm really too close to the "real" story to judge. But it's hard not to get up in arms over some of the changes, and snicker muchly at the obvious Hollywoodization of the plot.

Well, I have to say that your funny additions will soften the blow when I finally get to read a copy of the script. I'll think of this and laugh! Oh, what shocks you must have had when you turned each page!

It's great to get an idea of what they'll have to do to the characters and plots in order to do a movie. I don't think I'll ever be really happy with a movie if they have to do things like this to it, but at least I'll be resigned to the fact that they will do weird things. ::sigh::

Oh, and thanks for posting this Cheryl!!! Ya done great!

Well, if you think about it...this anatomy requirement for flying would make it much more clearer why there are so many male green riders. It wasn't until Lessa that it was "proven" that queens could "fly" without someone possessing male anatomy on their backs.

...

Yeah, I'm reaching. Really really far. Hehehehe!

Fun having been made...I actually do like the idea of Lytol having turned into some horrible cold, soulless creature upon the loss of his dragon. You could have some sweet character development with him, and then turn around and redeem him later on when he becomes Jaxom's mentor. He could be quite the gem of a character. (He is, already, and is probably one of the more under-utilized characters in canon.)

I also understand why Fax's name was changed. I first read the books in the mid-nineties, and it sounded...well, kind of stupid...since I didn't realize the actual first publication date, and that Fax machines weren't as commonplace (I don't think?) back then. To modern ears it's like coming across a character seriously called "Email".

I'm a bit curious as to how Jaxom will end up Lord Holder with this script. Is he Lessa's brother or cousin or something in this alternate Pern universe?

Edit: klagh...do you think they're trying to make it sound like "grog"?

Come on people, if the writer had set out to write a parody of Pern we would have giving him highest marks... hmm, no that's not quite right. It's Cheryl's cunning that makes this all palatable and have me look at it as a parody. Well done Cheryl!

However... I was under the Impression that the Alliance Atlantis script (that Anne clearly didn't like) was a different one than the Ron Moore/WB supervised series that came later, surely?

Thank you Cheryl, for this report in progress, you are doing fantastic!

Now I realise once again why I so rarely go the movies or watch television.

I'm not shocked by the name change either, but Thrax just makes me think of anthrax which isn't any better of an association.

As for Jaxom, given Lessa's maternal darning of his socks... I propose that in episode 10 we learn she gave birth to him when she was 12, after having been raped of course.

chuckles off into the wayside. By the way Cheryl, hope you don't mind me calling it a mockumentary in Rare books on ebay thread. I didn't realise how close I was to the truth. Shucks, that was a scream.

But P'ter, you'd probably watch it because it said PERN and then you'd give up in disgust afterwards. Most of us would do that, I guess.

Oh, I would assume so, they would have had to scrap that script. It's scary that this script was provisionally approved of (though who knows what changes might have been made from this first draft to the one just before filming began).

I think this mostly shows that Pern should never be a tv series, as the necessary changes to adapt it to an ongoing series are not palatable. I can totally see this show on the ol' WB though. Lessa and her frienemy Kylara. The F'lar-F'nor-Lessa love triangle. Goran left alive to be a villainous presense for a while.

One bright spot of the love triangle -- I bet there'd have been no Brekke, or at least not for a few seasons at least. Not until the love triangle has been milked a while.

I could see Pern as a series, but not the three main books. If the first movie was successful, I could see them doing the Harper Hall books as a TV series, with a little crossover from the series to the movies and vice versa.

Imagine Piemur in a Leave it to Beaver type of role.
