Menolly was born in 2500 and arrived at the Harper Hall in 2515, a detailed timeline can be found on Sariel's Guide to Pern (here).

As Menolly is modelled after Anne's stabe manager Derval Diamond I am assuming , without searching the Harper Hall books, that Menolly has long dark and curly hair, dark brown and she is relatively tall, lean and lanky.

The best likeness I know is the one Robin Wood did for The People of Pern, because that person looks very much like Derval Diamond, whom I had the pleasure to meet at Anne's.

I think most of the book covers picture her that way. When I get around to re-reading DS, I'll try to get a cite for her hair color.

The hair doesn't matter as much as her lankiness. I would think that in a riding jacket and helmet (with the hair put up), it would be easy to mistake her for a young boy. And didn't that happen when she first got to the Weyr?

T'gran is the rider who rescued Menolly and referred to her as lad twice before getting her to the Weyr....so lanky and boyish fits...Elgion was rescued prior to Menolly and thought "the boy had fainted" Later on Felena asked her how many turns and she stated she was 15 turns in age....only reference to her hair was that it was pretty and had been hacked off....

Menolly.... I think it is about time for Dragonsinger read number 35 to begin

But I have always used the picture from Dragonsinger (scene of Brekke's call) where Firelizards are swirling and she is kneeling in the Cot.

She may be lanky and boyish, but she's definitely hit puberty: Silvina, when kitting Menolly out, comments on Dunca's remarks about Menolly's lack of underwear and 'breastbands'.

Well if I recall from DSong she had just turned 14 Turns old in the winter that harper died and the Sea Holder was afrade (of shaming the hold which her "turnings") to put on her shoulders by the time spring and the new harper Elgion she had turned 15 turns by the she came to the Wyer for she barily remembers when the Hold doors where locked and the traders would come.

For hair coloring I would say redish bits of brown for I have brown that changes redish in the sun, one year I when camping and was outside with my sun visior on my hair was nead was carrot color on the top and dark brown on the bottom where the sun had not got to it. When I got back from that trip peopple asked me what did I do to my hair in orther words did I color my hair, I was and said they sun did the coloring from that trip. To me I looked like a cake with frosting on it.

My mom had a sun hat thet had a hole in and one year she was would outside and the sun had taken all the color from her hairm and she didn't know about till some asked did she do somnething to her hair. Her hair also changed to redish tints too in the sun most of the time.

Hans and Emeraldrose...That was about the age I remembered her as being...maybe a few years yonger...I would have said maybe 13. Thank you for finding my answer.

Topaz and GHarris...the red just never set with me...as I was almost possitive it was curly brown. I don't know where they got the red other than the red might get quicker attention for the bookcover, when it was on the store shelves.

Emeraldrose... I don't think she was really wanting anyone to notice her as being Sea Holder Yanus's daughter...so went along with letting them think she was a boy...especially with the hacked off hair.

Thank you everyone...for your very quick and helpful answers.

I always pictured it brown - and fairly short, like shoulder length, because when she was at the Weyr Felena tsk-tsked over her hair which looked like it had been cut with a belt knife (which it had!) Menolly was 15 at that point.

I think the red hair colour is a result of the enormous popularit and sales of the SFBC Harper Hall trilogy with the Victoria Poyser cover art. On that both Menolly and Piemur have red hair

It COULD be a rich brown with auburn (natural) highlights when the sun's at the right angle.

I think she was 15 turns. Jaxom said something about her hair being kept short. He liked girls with longer hair, but with as much dragon ridding she did he could understand her liking her hair short. Something like that.

She was too tall and lanky to be a proper girl.

I always pic. her hair as reddish brown.

She's got some quick sketches of F'lar and Lessa in the Exhibit Hall. She's really satisfied with Lessa, but looking for a more perfect fit for F'lar.

Shalyn,OOooooOOO the wave of curiosity that starts, the minute I take an interest in another Pern Character... I have always been wanting to do a set of portraits of the major characters from the first three Pern books for myself. I have a wall of portraits. that I would like to be able to add some of these to. Menolly is one of my favorites and so naturally she is on my list when and if I find her face...ugg. BUT...this question about her hair color, came about from several other threads, where a few of us have been happily talking about these self same characters. Menolly has recently come up in those discussions, and I was just wandering...the red hair seems to be so prevalent on the book covers it caused me to second guess myself.

GHarris...thanks for the *Plug*...but Shalyn's, not only already seen F'lar and Lessa, but made her comments and compliments on them as well...

I'm fairly sure there's at least one reference in the books to her having dark hair, though that's not very specific.

But I don't really care about proof on this matter. I have a very strong image in my head of Menolly having flaming red hair, like on the Rowena Morrill cover of Dragonsong, which was the first Pern book I'd seen. So nothing's getting that image out of my head :p

I was looking over Dragonsinger this AM. and at one point Silvia (sp) hold up some red fabric and said the Menolly would look good in it. This leaves me to think that her hair was not red. Very few people who have red hair looks good wearing red.

Maybe not flaming red hair, but red clothing tends to bring out red highlights in hair. Green tends to be the color of choice for clothing for redheads.

So maybe that is an indicator that her hair was brunette, but had red highlights in it.

Yeah, but when Silvina was giving her the clothes, she also pulled out "a bolt of a rich, dark red fabric." And told Menolly, "Now, a rich red will become you. Ah, yes this will suit you well," (pg 242 Harper Hall of Pern) It was for a dress for special occasions.

A bright redhead wouldn't look good in deep red. Dark auburn would be okay as it's more brown than red.

Of course I HATE Rowena covers (I don't think it looks at all like the description.) I may be biased.

I kinda picture it on the lower part of the hand near the wrist.

Not being saracastic (damn internet with no vocal inflections) but feel the pulse in your wrist? Where do you think that goes? I can't find a decent on-line picture but I believe the brachial artery branches into smaller vessels--the blood has to get to your fingers somehow! Arteries deliver oxygenated blood, veins (which we can see in our hands more easily) are returning deoxygenated blood to the heart. The only exception is the pulmonary vein and artery, where this is reversed--the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs, the pulmonary vein returns oxygenated blood to the heart for delivery to the rest of the body. The vessels in the hand are smaller (arterioles?) but they still have to be there or the tissue would turn necrotic.

Just had mine taken Fri. right in the middle of your arm, just above the wrist?

Another spot is along the neck too.
