I was just thinking - what would happen if the BB and Perneese books would meet. Say one brave ship missing the becon placed in the Rukbat system and hey presto an interesting twist to ponder apon.

I have always felt that the worlds of Anne McCaffrey were related in one way or another.

I've always thought (hoped) there was a relation, as well.

That's one of the few things Anne laid down, that all her books are set in different universes, and most especially that Pern won't ever be visited by, say, a brainship. I even seem to remember her saying that Crystal Singers and Brainships were in different universes, in spite of the fact brainships appear in the CS series, although I won't accept that reasoning myself.

They could, but Anne's said they won't. Not much we can do about that I'm afraid. I think she particularly wants to keep Pern separate from the other stories.

She does. The other couples are Samel and Chadria, and Brendan and Boira (although Boira's not seen much).

i believe that there is a connection; in crystal singer and talent series as well as b&b the same Central authority is used (which you wont believe but i just forgot the name and dont have time to look it up at the moment); the same central admin. and enforcement guys are used (like at the end of the second book in the crystal singer series, where Lars had to pitch up for a hearing). well, now that i dont have enough substantial evidence to back this claim,

And that would be the F.S.P. (Federated Sentient Planets). The E.E.C. (Exploration and Evaluation Corps) team who surveyed Pern was an exploration service working for this Federation. F.S.P. is of course mentionned as the current known universe federation in the BB series.
Wikipedia relay the Anne's universes distinction in the article about Anne: "While many of McCaffrey's most famous works are set in a universe which is governed by The Federated Sentient Planets or "FSP", these are not set in the same universe. The FSP is a story telling background that the author has found to be a useful tool for this series." Useful... Sure. But why so similar? F.S.P. does appear in numerous series written by Anne in a strange common way. What may have been a discreet personnal joke from Anne became annoying when people began to notice. What's the deal if the universe is the same anyway? I personnaly like the idea that all these worlds may exist in the same universe, at similar periods. But if Anne does not like the idea, I guess nobody can force her to write things that way ![]() |

I am a bit surprised that they are in different universes...it has been a while since I have read the talent series (approx 4 years) but I have read other stories of hers and thought one of the neat things was that they were in the same universe/galaxy...maybe it is the use of FSP that threw me...
learn something new everyday I guess... ![]() |

I've alwasy felt it could very well be the same Universe, but that PERN Crossovers wouldn't ever happen as the planet was Interdicted by the FSP when the few that ran after the first thread fall, lied and said the entire colony was lost due to a flesh eating organizm.
Extrapolating from that, FSP could of returned one time after that to put up a warning bouy outside the Rukbak system, warning ships away from it as it was deadly. But it's Anne's worlds, so it's her rules! |

Well here is a idea, howabout a Pern Fan Fic AU Crossover (plotbunny), with a damage Drive and you end up in Pern Section of space?
Didn't Helva in the short story have something like invisble mode in which she watched what was going on? Its one that I don't have, also there is a short story in Tor book titled Girl Who Heard Dragons too. I asked just before quest time ![]()

Here I would most certainly agree with you. I have always enjoyed the idea that all of Anne's worlds came from and lived in the same universe...just perhaps mostly at opposite ends of it. It all fits so nicely for me...and it seems quite a few others as well.
