She is an amazing writer, and for those of you that haven't read anything by her yet you should start with the Valdemar series. There are different orders you can read them in, but Mercedes Lackey herself recommends reading them in publication order. The first three books are Arrow of the Queen, Arrow's Flight, and Arrow's Fall. For the rest of the list, go here

I've never read any of the Valdemar series.

My favourites are the Bedlam Bard, The Serrated Edge and Diana Tregarde books, which are all part of the Elves On The Road universe.

I have to admit that I don't particularly like Mercedes' choice of title Elves On The Road. It reminds me of our road signs here, instead of Koalas next 5km, it's Elves next 5km.

I have all of her Valdemar series and love it soooo much my kids bought me two of the CD's related to it for Mother's Day this year Naturally they are getting sick of listening to me trying to sing alongwith them (especially as they are sooo not into any kind of folk music LOL)

BTW freespirit, if you want to try any of her Valdemar series, try following her own advice and read the Arrows trilogy first - personally I then read the Vanyel trilogy which worked for me

Arrows of the Queen is good place to start off with. Also her elemental books are also good.
Elemental Masters

Fire Rose, The
Gates of Sleep
Serpent's Shadow, The
Phoenyx And Ashes
Wizard of London

depends on what you want to read. The Valdemar series are good.

You can get it from Firebirds Arts & Music Inc at www.firebirdsarts.com along with Masterharper of Pern (which I already had) and lots of other Mercedes Lackey CDs
I'm still working on getting other ML CDs from the kids but not holding out much hope

I have all the Elemental Masters books except "Wizard of London" (someone will have to buy it for me), and I have most of Valdemar. I really only care about the ones with Heralds or Tarma and Kethry, because the whole Mage Wars stuff kind of bored me. I have the three Diana Tregarde books, which I like but find they end rather abruptly. (Wish she'd do more.) I've never been interested in any of her other books.

As for my favorite Valdemar book.. I'm thinking Arrows of the Queen.

I've read the Halfblood Chronicles that she wrote with Andre Norton, but I haven't gotten around to reading any of her others yet. I'm sure they're good. From what others have told me, the Halfblood Chronicles are not her best work, so I'm looking forward to reading her others (although I did like those books quite well).

Shalyn, you'll not get a bad review for the Joust books from me! I liked them. They're not up to a standard with the better Heralds book (I agree with Anareth there) but I do like them and I'll give credit to that smart marketing guy or gal that came up with the sentence that lover's of Anne McCaffrey's Dragons/Dragonriders of Pern will surely like this series

I liked the first Joust book the best, and I would recommend that any dragon lovers at least try it. It spends a lot of time exploring the care and feeding of dragons, and the relationship between dragon and rider. I enjoyed it.

Thumbs up Re: Mercedes Lackey

I recently bought Joust, Alta and Sanctuary at a fantastic sci-fi/fantasy bookshop here in Oslo, which incidentally beats most of the bookshops in London other than the Forbidden Planet for the scope of its collection

I enjoyed Joust and am halfway through Alta and reserving judgement as it's beginning to feel a bit contrived... But she's created a very believable world, different from Valdemar, so I'm going to keep going

I loved the Valdemar books. I has most of them in hardback but like most of my Pern lost them in a fire 4 years ago and haven't had the money to replace them. I also loved the Tregarde books. I have not read any of the Joust books yet. If I ever get my over due books fine paid off I might. Jennifer lost a book and we didn't get it turned in until she FINLY cleaned her room and found it.

Same here! A friend just lent me several of her Lackey books, including "The Fairy Godmother" which I tore through in one night and am currently rereading... I think the other books she lent me are fairy tale types, "The Black Swan" is one of them I know... I do plan on trying the other series eventually!

**SPOILER FOR EXILE'S HONOR BELOW**

I'm know I'm totally in the minority on this one, but I find her writing sugar coated and poorly edited. Every time I read one of her books there are always glaring errors. Characters change names, portions of paragraphs repeat themselves...ect.

The last one I read was Excile's Honor and that was actually pretty decent. At least, the first half of it was. I think it would have been more interesting if the main character had actually fought against the Herolds because it would have provided true conflict... but, eh. Then "Myste" showed up. The author reborn in the book, who the main character falls for. It gave me the willys, to be frank. Like I was reading someone else's sexual fantasy. Ewwww...

And that's when I stopped reading her books about six months ago. Never again. Never, never again.

I'm waiting for "Reserved for the Cat" to come out in paperback, so it matches the rest of my Elemental Masters set. Right now I'm going back to read "The Fire Rose," which I guess they don't really consider to be the same series. I'm not sure why.

I am reading Queen's Arrow to Mom & Kibbie now. Mom really likes the book.
Mom has a hard time reading, because it is hard for her to hold the book open & her eye are still not right.
(Mom would prefer that I read her Steven King books, But That is NOT going to happen.
I do not read creapy.)
