I have not been to a party since we had Jenn's birthday here a year and a half ago. The few people we know do not do parties and neither do we. I wonder if a virtual party here would be as well attended as something I might try to plan in RL? I'll be happy to come though and bring virtual pie for P'ter! Pumpkin and mince, though.

I would go to your R.L Priscilla, if I had money for gas and hotel and Kibby could get off work and school. All the reasons I don't travel more.

When do you want to have it?

Maw, I would absolutely invite you and a few other really good online friends and you could stay here, so skip the hotel cost.

What sort of holiday party are you thinking, Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hannukah or both? Like I said, I got pies and I can provide virtual music from the band Mike is in and the school chorus he teaches. Will this be on your island? We could probably most of us use the warm sunshine!

This evening I mostly tried to talk my father through using and installing software under Windows 8. It's worth bearing in mind that he has a very short attention span, short temper, is half deaf and has a stuffed phone. ...Also, I have never used Windows 8 other than having poked the pre-release engineering evaluation version for about ten minutes in a virtual machine (last time I regularly used Windows other than at work (XP) was seven years ago. That was a "fun" two hours...

Tomorrow I go to have a look at a really cheap used car. Basic intention being to keep it for a month or two so that I can reduce the engine in the Skoda to its component parts to sort it out, and can decide what to do with the Saab. Then will likely give it a good valet, touch up the scuffs on the fenders and sell it on (in all probability all being well, for more than I'm paying for it at the moment - the dealer that currently has it only has a very small lot, and it's effectively costing them money so it's priced to be shifted rapidly - i.e. priced at what they would expect to get at auction).

Currently I've got a working range of about 5 miles from home as I dare not trust the Skoda any further than that at the moment...so it will be nice to be actually mobile again!

...Fact that it's a car I've fancied owning for years of course doesn't come into the equation at all!

Ok, so what kind of car is this that you've wanted?

Jeff is really looking forward to the F1 race this Sunday, the last of the season. Lewis Hamilton is ahead in points but with this new "double points" for the last race it will be down to the wire. I have to say I will be watching too. It's been a much more exciting season than the last couple years.

I wonder how much it would cost in gas to go to Connecticut. It took Tammy 80 dollars to go to Delaware.

It should be good fun. All sorts of rumours and conspiracy theories going around. Lots of hype and suggestion Lewis will pull a Senna and take Nico out in the first corner. I hope he doesn't. He just needs a clean race and not to loose his P2 (surely not a hard task with the form the Mercedes are in) and the title is his.

I havn't been much of a Lewis fan previously, mostly down to his behaviour off track, but he has really impressed me this year.

I hope it will be a clean race. Jeff says all he needs to do is come in second if Rosberg wins and he still wins overall. I know nothing about his off track life, or any of the others for that matter. I am hoping he wins.

Maw, I have no idea how much it would cost in gas. Was that $80 to Delaware round trip and how recent was it? Gas is less than a year ago but nothing like the 25¢ a gallon when I first started driving!

As far as your party, I think it should have a separate thread, maybe in the "games" area? Then we can "party hearty" all we want!

In my NANO story this year I win a large lottery and buy a set of three islands. When we get there we find out that there are magical beings living there, winged cats, horses and wolves, gryphons, unicorns, and, of course, dragons. We invite people who will be willing to move to join us. You and Jeff join us. So you will be moving soon. You just don't know it. Your kids can come as well if they want to. Everything runs on solar or wind power.

I have been playing around with the idea of a magical island for a while & even have a face book page on it. If you wish to learn more about my island you can here

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Isle-...2407303?ref=hl

If anyone else would like to join me on my virtual magical island let me know

Have you read Catwings by Ursula LeGuin? I read it and the sequel years ago and remember enjoying them. I wish it was available on my Nook but no luck.

A magical island would be lovely!

Speaking of fueling things, I saw on the BBC website that the first "poo bus" has begun rolling. I am not sure how it works but it is fueled in some way by waste! We could use that over here, we certainly have plenty of POO!

This car...

Citroen Xantia, so something that's never likely to be seen in the US.

Sold dozens of them back when I worked in the garage, and always fancied one. Back then though they were far, far outside my student budget. Recently I've discovered that their values in the last few years have dropped off a cliff.

This particular example believe it or not cost me the grand total of £295 (roughly 450 USD) with a brand new year's roadworthiness certificate, and despite having 197K miles under its belt drives like the day it left the factory. Few scuffs here and there and one or two gremlins to sort, but nothing that can't be done. Reckon it will scrub up quite nicely.

Nothing rides quite as nicely as a Citroen with the proper hydropneumatic suspension system, which my dodgy spine is most thankful for!

You're right, I've never seen one. We do have the occasional Citroen over here though I don't know the model names.

A show we enjoy watching is something called Wheeler/Dealer. Two English fellows, one buys old cars and the other fixes them up and they sell them. Last night he bought a Morgan and it needed a whole new chassis. Quite a project!

Interesting, never thought that they made it over there!

Xantia is a nice motor, though as with all of them they had a bit of a reputation for being temperamental - mainly because a lot of people take one look at the suspension setup and run a mile. It's actually a surprisingly simple system when you break it down into its component parts, and so long as you take it bit by bit really isn't that hard to wrap your head around. Plus they really had worked out most of the bugs out of it by the time the Xantia came along (they've been using it since the 60s). Mechanically otherwise they're generally not too bad - the XUD diesel engine in this one is essentially the same unit as is still chugging away in goodness knows how many million taxis in India and similar areas and is generally pretty bulletproof - even if it does sound a bit like a tractor, especially when cold! The turbo lag is somewhat comical as well, though the later HDi units dealt with that pretty much, and produced some pretty insane fuel economy figures. This will return 50+mpg (UK) all day long, and the HDi models will crack 60mpg without breaking a sweat...This was in the late 90s as well in a car that's still comfortable by modern standards and will happily cruise well, well in excess of the legal limit all day long.

Rust wise this one looks to be utterly clean both where visible and underneath. Just a shame there's a scrape on the one side, it's a common colour though so hopefully I'll be able to pick up a replacement door cheaply, as that's where 90% of it is.

Do have to admit to having a Morgan on the long-term "I will own one day" list. The Morgan Three-Wheeler. It is utterly bonkers, and appeals to me on just about every level in terms of a car for the weekend. The official website here should show you all you need to know...

Mawra, I liked you island and would love to join you on it.

Zelandeth, thank you for sharing your passion for cars. I love viewing the pictures and reading about the cars though my car knowledge is limited to having a mechanic I trust not to steal me blind.

One day, I will travel to Connecticut, Pricilla and visit. However, I think I may fly from CA unless I have an excellent traveling companion willing to share the driving.

There are several pods that call the water surrounding the island home.

The dragon like to play with them.

There are several sizes of dragons, that range in size of large house cats up to a jumbo jet size. The small ones are a lot like cats, they are every where, especially where you do not want them

More Jeff than me, but yes. I have enjoyed the season this year.

You would get use to it, Lily. You need to come here and give it a try.

Steering wheel is on the perfectly correct side!

Left hand drive doesn't phase me that much at all, with the exception of reverse parking, problem there being that all my usual reference points are in the wrong place.

Spent a good hour today trying to explain how the hydropheumatic syspension in the Citroen worked to one of our housemates who made the mistake of asking what the odd green spherical things in the engine bay were - answer being for all intents and purposes the suspension springs, as it doesn't actually have springs as such. It's really quite clever, and gives a magic carpet like ride...but confuses people! I can try to explain how it all works if people want, that's up to you.

Do appreciate that a couple of folks seem to enjoy my automotive rambling!

Tomorrow hope to get the heater blower sorted (diagnosed it today to a cooked power socket) and start giving it a good clean. Engine bay in particular needs to be drowned in degreaser then attacked with the pressure washer to shift 16 years worth of grime! Only went in there to check oil, water and LHM (hydraulic fluid) today and came out looking like a coal miner...it needs cleaning!
