Default New Talent Books: "Barque Cats"

Yes, from Anne and her partner in crime Elizabeth Ann Scarborough we have coming to us the Barque Cats Series, set in the Talent Universe. I'm thinking it's probably YA.

Following are quotes from Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's e-mail newsletter.

Quote:
In October we turned in BARQUE CATS: Book One: Catalyst to Del Rey. Some
of you will remember the Barque Cats the Rowan and Damia had in Anne’s
Tower and Hive series. This is a story about how these beautiful and
exceptional felines became so important to space travelers. There’s
adventure, humor, some romance, and kittens!
Quote:
I have just been informed that Barque Cats Book 1, CATALYST, is to be
released on my birthday, March 23, in 2010. So please, dear beaders and
readers, for my birthday next year I’d like to be number one on the New
York Times Bestseller List (with Anne McCaffrey of course but she’s been
there before). Is that too much to ask?

Oh, Hooray! I love the Talent series, it is actually my favorite, and the Barque Cats remind me so much of our wonderful Maine Coon (which I understand Anne also has/has had several of). This is one book I'll definitely be pre-ordering! Thank you so much for the information, you are certainly still IPam, aren't you!

YES!

More Talent books! It's nice to know our suspicions about this one being a new Talent series is correct.

::happy dance::

::happy dance::

I wonder when in the timeline it will take place. For some reason I suspect between Pegasus in Space and The Rowan...there's 300 years there, give or take, that we don't know anything about.

Edit: haha, and in the original thread in the Everything Else forum I predicted it would be about Afra and Damia's great-great-great-etc. grandchildren. I'd make a lousy precog, yes?

That's great news! I will appreciate reading a Talent-inspired story again

Er... and sorry to ask, that's something I should remember from reading the Talent series, but it has been so long since I last read them; why are Barque Cats "so important to space travelers" again? I just can't put the finger on it...

From what little was said in the books, they are able to detect hull leaks and other issues in spaceships that could become serious life-threatening problems if not fixed. I'm guessing they could also likely be invaluable in finding survivors if something bad did happen. Sort of like a mine-canary and search-and-rescue dog in one, I'm thinking.

We really don't see all that much of them in action; Rowan has Rascal as a pet, and he's not really a true working-Barque, and Afra had a kid-infatuation with the species (sort of like a little girl really being into ponies) and a bunch of holos and book-knowledge about them. Afra never owned one, though. (Sort of surprised at that, although I guess the Barque's were "Rowan's" thing, and Coonies "Afra's" thing.)

Question Re : New Talent Books: "Barque Cats"

Thanks for the input D.M.

I was able to go look on the Internet and see if I could find some tidbit news about it. I found an article in a blog made by a certain Karen in July which made me flinch:

OT: Publishing Deal for Barque Cats

"Regular readers will know my obsession with cats, so this book is of particular interest to me. From Publishers Lunch:
Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's BARQUE CATS, like sailing ships of old, spaceships have cats but in space they are rare and valuable; what humans do not know is that the cats are plotting to take over the universe, to Sue Moe at Del Rey, in a two-book deal, by Donald Maass at Donald Maass Literary Agency, in association with Diana Tyler at MBA Literary Agents in London (NA)."

Nice about the 2 volumes info.
But er... about what I put in bold, I'm sorry but... what? Is this a joke or do we get a glimpse of what Barque Cats are really about?

I think someone was having a little joke, as that seems so unlikely a plot to fit into the Talent 'verse as to be approaching zero percert liklihood.

Hahaha I have to agree with Cheryl on that... definitely doesn't seem like something Anne would write about.

I imagine that the story will follow the use of barque cats in space and the human companions they live with. Though since we don’t actually know very much about the rare kitties… anything is possible!!

Looking closely to Karen's post on her blog and to results on Google for Publishers Lunch/Barque Cats, this announcement looks quite serious to me Does that invading plot sound that ridicoulous or that wild?

At first, I was surprised Ben then, I thought it might be a good idea. Talents tend to become over-confident now they master fighting hives. They even begin to "communicate" with some of their attackers IIRW. So, a threat coming from inside their clean organisation looks more and more appealing to me Especially if it appears to be nice innocent-looking little kittens from outer space (did you see the movies "Critters"? )

OK, I found references to Barque Cats in what must be the book "Damia". They look /very/ intelligent and quite independant. They sure have qualities when living in a ship, helping with ship integrity issues and shipwrek in space, and everyone say how beautiful and seducing they are. But reading this with the hint from Publisher Lunch makes them more mysterious than it first sounds.

The Rowan mention somewhere a illegal barque cat (No such cat is allowed planetside, usually...). She named it Rascal. Obviously, this cat was mean and ungrateful. And he even escaped for quite a time, after living with the difficult teen girl.
He surprisingly returns when the Rowan lives with Jeff, in other words when she became a famous Prime.

That is a perfect start for a plot theory!

Brenda, I was just trying to find clues which may support this invasion theory My only obvious point is the Rascal's ungrateful personality since the Rowan mentionned it herself. Out of that, all what I say is mere suppositions. I was just having fun here

She said "ungrateful wretch" in an affectionate way - she wasn't being serious. You would do better to have the context from "The Rowan" rather than limiting yourself to what you see in "Damia".

Okay, I couldn't tell it was a joke! Sorry! Tone doesn't always come across on the Internet!

Although if you plan to say anything serious about Rascal, I would recommend you read the book in which he is introduced. And also read it because it's a good book!

Well Maleus....whether this might be the real plot to the story or just a very funny lead in for it, it sure has fans wondering about it now...and eagerly awaiting the book to find out the real story.

I agree with most the other fans, that I will be more than ready for it in March 2010.

I didn't known there were that many plot theories about cat invading us Brenda. Nor did I know it could be a sensible subject

I have a cat myself, a wonderful little brat, black hair and green eyes (like dark leafs, awasome). But as Lady Maelin suggests for herself, my kitty definitively tamed me! Her name is Gaïa and she does what she wants, though what she wants often resumes to go in and out, and eat, and sleep, and claim for caresses and hugs. The only thing she can't do (and must still wonder why) is climbing on tables. I love my cat but I am no master any more, she has taken over my universe

Maleus...thats just about it...ours has also already taken over his corner of the universe. Now add that to how many happy cat *Owners* and perhaps they have already taken over...I know ours does anything and everyting he wants to, and we pay for him to be able to do it...he eats the best, drinks the best...and sleeps on the best...and gets up to cuddle them when they want us to...

Hi, folks, glad to hear you are excited about BARQUE CATS. Book 1 will be subtitled CATALYST and Book 2 subtitled CATACOMBS.
These books are not exactly part of the Talent series where the Barque Cats were introduced by Anne. The Rowan and Damia don't figure into them at this point, though Rowan may have a cameo in the second book. The books are more about the origins and development of the cats themselves as the extraordinary creatures they are--and how they become even more extraordinary than they appear to be in the Talent series, developing their telepathic partnership with humans as well as other super-feline traits.
(in book 2). One problem with making these Talent books is that those were published by Ace/Berkley and these are with Del Rey. It gets sticky if you use the same world with two different publishers.

Actually, there IS a cat plotting to take over not the world but going for universal domination but he is not a Barque Cat, more of a trickster character, but a very important one.

One more comment: some folks were wondering if the Barque Cats books were YA or not--we think of them more as being more family oriented. There are adult human as well as kid human characters but the cats are the true stars (ahem, as cats are).

Book three could be about a cat with a medical healing talent called 'Catatonic'.
