Steven -

Wow, what a gorgeous photo! It *almost* makes me wish I were there with you, but - nahhh!

Hope the debugging goes well today, hope you got some rest, and well done yet again. You brilliant man you. Nina, you are quite right, he is a genius.

(Lanen goes into 'smug' mode...)

Do you know, this man was actually single for a number of years? Unbelievable!

Hans, the hard hats are there because we're not allowed to leave that room and wander around the telescope enclosure without wearing a hard hat. There's some big stuff moving around up there. I'm not sitting at the workstation because I'm behind the camera. The room looks empty because the other guy had nipped out for a few minutes.

Nina and everyone else, thanks . My job isn't\like this every day. This is a special event, which is why I'm recording it here. I get to commission a new instrument maybe once every 4-5 years or so, but commissioning a new telescope is a rare experience. It's the first time I've done it (i.e. actually been here at the moment they got the first good observations).

But as well as getting this telescope working it really cheers me up to know that Anne is thrilled with the observation of Rukbat and the image I sent her. That was the main reason for doing it. It's Anne's star after all.

Lanen...

It's Anne's star, Steven, but through Anne's books were right there with her And through your gracious kindness we are allowed to experience this event tied into real science and to one of our most favourite worlds and authors

Lanen, he was single yes. What a silly thing to be surprised at!
It's only logical because he was there waiting for you!

What's more... of all things happening you decided to, first be born in another country and second take all that trime to meet him and make yourself available to him, now who'se fault is that?

ROFL, Hans!

Steven, gorgeous sunset picture, and it's nice to see the wider shot of your workstation. I did end up showing the first to my husband, and he said he'd very much like it (or at least having a third monitor as he has two already).

Steven, your reports to us make me feel almost as if I was included in your adventure. The pictures are wonderful and I could easily imagine a blown-up version of that sunset with the Moon and Venus hanging on my wall. It's an absolutely breathtaking image! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

Steven - wow, what a great idea to make a poster of that photo - wonderful! Wonder if Tom, Betsy's husband, would appreciate it?

And yes, Nina, I am very proud indeed to be with Steven. Though it's probably illegal to be in love with your husband after 6+ years of marriage, and being together more than 10 years!

Hans, you're right, what was I thinking? Of course it's my fault!!

Hope all goes well tonight, my dearest - thinking of you -

Despite hearing of so many divorces there are quite a ot of us with happy and long marriages.

Marjon and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary next year

My wife's theory behind syccesful marriages is that opposites attract, of course you don't need to be opposite in everything and some shared interests are great, e.g. we both read but different books The ide behind this is, of course, that in the case of opposites you need to learn hw to compromise and give in to the wishes the other has, which makes for great communication and usually a great marriage as the secret of a good marriage is not only love, but foremost communication and the willingness to handle things and cope together

Another pet theory she has is that arriages between the oldest with a youngest from a family have the best chances of working out; put two oldest or two youngest childs together and you have a much biger chance the marriage won't work out. The funny thing is that when we tested this with family, friends and colleagues the theory seemed to e true indeed with only a sedom exception

Yes, whenever I mention these theories there's always someone that immedately "proves" the contrary

We tested this on far greater numbers though

Watch it, now the next 6 or 7 will mention that their friends, parents etc. are both oldest or youngest kids

Hans -

Well, Steven is the oldest of his family, I'm the younger of two, and you probably couldn't get more opposite than the two of us - but like you, we learned that as long as we're willing to communicate, most of the problems go away. When you add compromise to the mix, it does make for smooth sailing.

My parents were both oldest children, and they fought like tigers until they divorced.

Hello everyone. Greetings from under the clouds. I'm back at sea level again and in my hotel room attempting to pack my stuff for the long journey back home tomorrow. I have some more photos to show you, but the intenet in this hotel is rather slow, so I'll wait until I get home.

It's been a really successful if long and extremely tiring trip. Thanks everyone for posting on this thread. It's been enjoyable to keep in touch with you all. It lets me know there is a real world still out there.

Hi Lanen, I'm coming home...

On the marriage thing (maybe this needs its own thread?):

My mother was the oldest of 9 children, my father was an only child born late to parents who married late (my grandmother was 33 when he was born, very old for a first birth in 1945). They'll celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in September.

pernaficionado, thanks for the good wishes, and don't worry. I figure my job on Tuesday is to hug him at the airport, take the luggage and the husband to the car, and then give him a shoulder to lean on to get him into the house! Anything more athletic can wait until it doesn't technically count as necrophilia.

I managed to chat to him briefly last night in his hotel in Antofagasta, he sounds shattered, and that's before he get on the plane for the 14-hour flight from Santiago to Paris! All good wishes for Steven's journey gratefully accepted...

And thanks everyone for putting up with our communicating through this telescope thread - sorry if I've dragged things off topic. My only excuse is that I miss him something rotten.

Steven, always listen to the "missus" when it comes to general health and well being, especially after an extensive plane trip. After all, we have to bring up kids and husbands (I'll probably get hounded for saying that but it's true). Sleep well, dream well and don't let the bed-bugs bite.

Thanks for all your good wishes everyone. I am home at last and had what one could call a decent night's sleep (even if my body kept waking up and thinking "Why am I asleep when it's only 8:30pm... wait a minute... it's 1:30am... and I'm tired... ok..."). I'm back on the computer while Lanen is in the shower.

Kath, yes I was warned to avoid Iberia, so I'm lucky I travelled Air France. Did you travel Iberia on your visit there? I'm told if you have to go through Madrid that LAN Chile is the better option. Either way it's still a long journey for someone with long legs who can't cram himself into the available space. Will you be using VISTA observations in any of your future research? If so, you could continue the story.

Here are the remaining pictures I have been meaning to show you. Do you remember the amazing dome containing the simulated rain forest I showed you near the beginning? You may be asking how you can get away with the light pollution caused by having a glass dome next to an observatory. The answer is this mechanism, which sits in the middle of the dome:

and after sunset the mechanism expands, like a giant umbrella, to cover the whole dome. This is what the "rainforest" look like at night with the cover closed:

It's interesting to watch the cover close automatically at sunset; that is, if you don't have a telescope to get to...

Here is the what the VISTA telescope looks like from outside the enclosure:

The little Fiat on the left is what we have been using to drive between the residencia and the telescope. (ESO have this habit of using the same kind of car throughout an observatory - at the Cerro Tololo observatory they have a fleet of Volkswagen Beetles [bugs in the USA] and at Cerro Paranal they have a fleet of Fiats.) The main entrance to VISTA is through the dark blue double doors on the right of the vehicles. (Not as interesting as you think - a little human-sized door opens up as a cut-out. The huge doors are saved for loading and unloading large equipment.)

Lastly, I managed to catch this photograph on my very last day at the telescope. The Paranal observatory has an adopted animal. It's a wild fox which visits the observatory and I think is sustained by the food and water handed out by the people there. Here he is:

I hope you all enjoyed hearing about my time at VISTA. I left everything in good condition so theoretically I shouldn't need to go back. But I hear they are short staffed for the science verification stage, so there's a chance the "powers that be" might send me back there again. If this happens during the Chilean summer (winter for us northern hemisphere folks) I'll make sure VISTA observes the Horsehead Nebula . If I hear about the press release when VISTA is officially operational I'll post a link here.

Now for a good long rest...

I can't believe I missed your incredible photo, of the sunset while you were in Chille. It is my most favorite sight in the night or for me early morning sky here....thank you soooo much Steven, for sharing such a beautiful picture.

P.S. I do hope that you don't have to go back...although I can certainly understand why they ask you...you are our very own Master Pern Astrologer

Say P'ter don't you mean Amariyah?

Great images SteveB thank for posting them. That reminds me of how some of the sport domes close in your first image.

The doors to the telscope remind me of the how some ot the doors open on Pern at Landing I thinking of when they first rediscoved it in The White Dragon. Thanks for all the images.
