Default Fun and gratuitous uses of dragonflame, post-Thread

A post by P'ter in the Snowing thread in the Cafe gave me the idea for this thread. Let's think of all the unusual/silly/gratuitous uses of dragonflame we can, for use after the last Threadfall.

Quote:

Hmmm, fun, but hard to be truly effective and get it all.

On the other hand, dragons would be great at taking care of it on the ground where it'd otherwise have to be shovelled. And they could make beautiful flowy ice sculptures up in the High Reaches where melted snow would refreeze quickly. You could even have the rider make a compact snow sculpture first, then have his dragon very carefully melt just the surface so that it'd turn into an ice-coated sculpture. I could easily see a competition arise, which the best pair of sculpter/controlled-flamer would win.

And here's another silly idea for a gratuitous use of dragonflame post-Thread: a dragonrider who's a potter wouldn't need a kiln, just a handy supply of firestone. Actually, not a half bad idea for a dragonrider occupation. Certainly as good as sky-watching for meteoroids.

Well, as long as we're being silly, how about a Barbecue stand at a gather? You choose your own fresh cut and Baketh will flame roast it for you on the spot!

Fire fighting. All the trees for paper . . . they can dig trenches, start back burns, and do rescues.

I am sure people are skiing and sledding. Getting rid of snow that could become avalanches . . .

Dragons and Dragonriders make pretty good interrogaters from what was said about questioning subjects before the Robinton abduction trial.

Just make sure you don't chain the dragon down to roast your meat, or it will be not be well done--Darkovan proverb, which had prompted a Darkover/Pern cross-over short story that was published (with MZB's approval & much to Anne's amused chagrin) in "Sword of Chaos"

I kind of like the idea of a dragon clearing away snow in the winter...

Perhaps there is a way that a dragon could be used to heat several houses. A more consistant hot fire has got to be better than the price of heating oil.

I must admit, I first thought of dragons helping out with outdoor catering, and then I wondered about using dragonflame to start or maintain various furnaces - either for heating, cooking or what have you.

Dragons can do other things besides fly and flame, too! They could be wonderful excavators. They could cut roadways and maybe start a few mines. And think of the farming uses! They could burn off a field and then turn it up in no time!

Yeah, but don't give the dragons anything alcoholic to drink at the party or they might start lighting things they shouldn't...and then we'd have flame out both ends...

Silly use #101: Dragon Drunkard Detoxification!

A quick trip Between ought to wake them up, then a couple rapid snap-rolls as a purgative (hmmm, should probably use Greens for this duty), followed by a vertical dive toward the ground to rival a dive-bomber that is arrested by another quick pop Between back to a higher altitude and a more sedate landing.

Pretty much figure that guy will never touch another drop...

It was, and I thought about pointing that out a couple times, but as I support a bit of topic drift on a general basis, I figured I could hardly complain that it happened to my thread.

How 'bout forestry? Related to the fire-fighting idea that someone mentioned; but using fire to help the forest- thinning, burning slash piles, etc.

Or maybe in the Smithcraft, to heat the forges

To light bonfires for celebration or just regular campfires for campers- however, have to watch that the fires don't escape! :-)

I lkike the clearing snow idea; several times this past winter I thought of it! "Now, if we just had a nice convenient dragon."

Therapeutic dragonriding? I just took the Delta Society Therapy Dog test with my dog, and I wondered, "How come this can't be extended to dragons?" (After getting over the major hurdle, that they don't exist on this planet, silly!)

Maybe fire-lizards could do this, too. Ruth might be good at this, since he's a little different himself and also has his own special abilities. Canth has the temperment for it; he's so mellow and he just kinda hangs out, also he is very accepting (bronze w/ a better suntan). Mnementh might scare non-riders at first, but he has a heart as big as the weyr bowl- plus he's beautiful, he'd be good!
