I feel cheated and robbed! To be honest I never paid that much attention to discussions about differences in versions. It now seems that what we in the US got is almost a Reader's Digest Condensed version, with a lot of the author's style altered or simply removed!

That's one way to look at it. At a panel about editing that I attended at WorldCon last fall, the authors on it viewed their US editions as more authoritative, recognizing that the extra editing that was done to them produced a better end product. But for those of us who are very detail oriented, the extra info found in the UK Dragonsdawn is quite fascinating!

It would be nice if there weren't any questions concerning the differences between UK and US, seeing as I have absolutely no extra money to spend on different editions!

L'isa. the differences occur between every UK and US edition of Dragonsdawn.
The US editions are published by Ballantines/Del Rey and the UK editions by Bantam (hardcover) and Corgi (paperback).

![]() ![]() I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. It says a lot about US publications. I guess I'll just have to start buying UK editions to satisfy my thirst. Ugh!! How frustrating! ![]()

Thanks Hans, I also found the forum here that has the covers of all the books from different countries. I was a little confused, is DD the only one that has the differences or all the books.

As far as I/we know Dragosdawn has the most differences between the editions. But there are always small differences.
Anneli did the comparison of most of Dragonsdawn. I did a comparison between editions of the short story P.E.R.N. Survey, and while Anneli discovered, as said earlier, 40 extra characters (all minor) and many differences in many parapgraphs, I found only minor lingual differences and a sentence omitted or different here and there. I don't know for sure but don't think other Pern books have as much differences as Dragonsdawn but until we have compared them we can't say anything for sure.

Seems I am going to be studying for the quest, while I am on the plane going to Copenhagen...what better way to spend my time on-board, than by reading one of the books on the list for the McCaffrey Quest.

I'd just like to ask a quick question: Is it possible to compete in a non-competitive way? Kind of unofficially?
I don't have all my AMC collection with me (as I have said before, they are in France where I used to live and I am now in the UK!) so cannot re-read them all in time (even using our local library which is generally good at Sci-Fi/Fantasy but not that good at AMC - or maybe so good that they are always checked out!). But I would like to have a go to see what I remember and what is lodged in a crinkle of my brain somewhere without having to revise. Or should I just enter normally and see what happens? LOL |

Sorry Gidget, you either enter (last year there were people too that guessed many answers; possible because the majority is multiple choice) or you don't. The alternative is writing down the answers for yourself and wait until the answers are published

We haven't picked the weekend yet, but it'll be one of the last ones in October, since several of us running it will be going to EuroCon in late September and will need time to prepare for it afterwards.
