Default Nancy Graves Bache

Is it possible that Nancy Graves Bache, who was one of the dedicatees of Alchemy and Academe, was Nancy Cunard? Her father's middle name was Bache.

She was a total rebel against her shipping family: a poet and printer rather then playwrite but, given her output, a play or two is not impossible and I haven't traced all of it.

She was an idealogical communist who fought in Spain (and reported the war for a paper) and had a long term relationship with an Afro-american musician.

She died in 1965. A & A was published in 1970 so the dates are possible.

Interesting theory! I don't know one way or the other, but it'd be lovely to find out.

I suppose we could always write to Anne and ask. (Or is that cheating? )

A Nancy Cunard biography. According to my source, her father was Sir Bache Cunard.

That's one of the things that got me wondering.

Plus the fact that Anne likes "strong" females, which Nancy was.

I wondered whether Anne refered to her as Bache to avoid any further trouble from the main stream Cunards.
