I'm sufficiently intrigued by the description and hype for His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik (titled Temeraire in the UK, apparently) that I'll be looking for it in the bookstore (rare for me to buy a book that I don't already know I like or have personal recommendations for), and thought I'd share it with everyone here too.
There's an excerpt online (which I haven't read yet but shall soon), and a website. Del Rey is apparantly trying something new (explained a bit in the interview below): this book is the first of a triliogy and rather than releasing each book a year apart, they had the author write all three and will release them one per month in the next three months. Just enough to make you wait for it, not so much that you forget about the new author before the next book. What first caught my eye was the blurbs of support by Anne (of course!) and Terry Brooks, which lead to me actually reading the rest of the Del Rey email rather than deleting it. The following comes from the March special issue of the Del Rey Internet Newsletter. Quote:

Wow! What an advertising campaign must be around for this book.
I too have just opened an email about it and made a note to mention it on line. I havent read all the "blurb" yet, but will be most interested to follow it up

I already have it on my "wish list" at B&N online. Will order when it is released. Sounds good.

i had wondered about the title thing - Temeraire has been available here for at least a couple of months, and I got a bit confused when I read the email and it was saying stuff about it being her first book - when i knew Temereaire was already out! LOL, didn't even think of the different title thing.

i'll be picking it up from the library tonight, but I have two other books to read first - it's pretty popular i was something like 5th in line.
At the moment I'm almost finished the 2nd Vatta's war book and I've got waiting to be read the 3rd Vatta's War book Engaging the Enemy by Elizabeth Moon, and The Hero by John Ringo ('nother library book due back first) I've been waiting for this one for months. |

I got my copy and read it. My first thought was the book was Horatio Hornblower meets the Dragon Riders of Pern. I liked it though and am looking forward to the next 2 books.

I need to get busy reading the latest E. Moon book, then I should go buy this one. *nods decisively to self*

Yep Lily, it seems that the publishers want to confuse people, so the first book is titled Temeraire in the UK/Oz/NZ, and was released there several months ago in hardcover (in the US Del Rey is just doing paperbacks) . To balance that, you don't get the second and third installments so quickly.
Here's the full rundown: US His Majesty's Dragon - Mar 28 paberback Throne of Jade - Apr 25 paperback Black Powder War - May 30 paperback UK/Oz/NZ Temeraire - Jan 3 hardcover (Aug 7 paperback) Temeraire: Throne of Jade - Aug 7 hardcover (Jan 2 2007 paperback) Temeraire: Black Powder War - Jan 2 2007 hardcover (Aug 2007 pb?)

It's very good, an easy read, and I enjoyed it very much. I didn't expect to finish it so quickly, so now I have nothing to read as the library is closed until tuesday for the easter break! I definately recommend it.

I just started "His Majesty's Dragon", and have the other two waiting in the wings. I love the writing style - it reminds me of Haggard. So far I love it, and it is very plausible.
The only thing I still can't wrap my mind around is how the dragon speaks. But hey, what's one little anamoly? |

I was just reading at Del Rey that they've signed up Novik for the next set of books in the series (or something like that, I don't feel like checking the details right now)

Finally read it, and was "OMG! It's like Pern, only well-thought-out from the start." Also, I could tell she was an Austenite before I read the About the Author because there is an Admiral Croft (though he's a bit more of a jerk than the Admiral Croft of "Persuasion", my all-time favorite Austen.)
I <3 Temeraire, even if I can't quite wrap myself around how to pronounce his name. His Chinese name is easier. Must get Throne of Jade. Must read more. Now. (And thank you, thank you, thank you, lady, for believing in not leaving the reader dangling and then meandering off with loose ends dangling. I hate it when authors do that. Yes, Harry Turtledove, Mr. WorldWar, I'm looking at YOU.) |

I guess this means I don't need to send my copy to you?
I plan on reading Throne of Jade soon...but I have so many books to work on. A couple of Lacky's, Wen Spencer's Wolf Who Rules (sequel to Tinker), and other's I've recently acquired. I like to take a breather between books by the same author - only so I don't get tired of them. |

Got the full set, when they get here I can torment Steve cos he will go home JUST before they get here ![]() Not even read the first yet because I didn't want to have to wait for me to be able to afford the others. £22 including postage. Sort of Ron Weasley's big brother meets Horatio Hornblower.
There are a fair number of mistakes in her naval bits.

The mistakes are no worse than Anne's having Admiral Ashiant order the Washington to head home by turning through 360 degrees!

![]() I began reading the Hornblower books when they were televised. Earliest date I've got for that is 1998 so I was 13 I think and I kind of progressed from there. (I'd take a phto except my bookcase is triple stacked with Pern at the front as they're most uneven in size) From the extract it seemed wooden as if she had read novels but not progressed from there! |
