We all have our favorite AMC series. They each have different ans similar elements that make them so good. What would you want a new series to be about? The next generation of a previous series? The previous generation? Other characters? Or a whole new topic entirely?

I want a prequel to the Crystal Singer series, about Milekey discovering Ballybran crystals and what they could do!

A novel about Nora Fenn would be nice too - wonder if Anne could dust off the draft novel she did already (it's languishing in a research library in Syracuse) and turn it in to something.

WOW Brenda I think we read two different short stories I would never have thought of Nora Fenn as a doormat, it took courage to break away from her family expectations the way she did

Well, in the first story she is too cowardly to stand up to her father and tell him she likes computers, that she and her brother have been secretly trading chores. He is furious that she hasn't been doing the "women's work" and only lets up when he realizes that she is talented and he can use her. She's never going to go to college without his approval, so she goes along with it.

In the second story she is still going along with the intention of going right back to her father when she finishes her education, and she is also going with a controlling boyfriend; she breaks off from him for a while but goes back to him in the end.

Fair enough, like I said, we have different interpretations, thanks for sharing yours

I don't agree, though. I think Nora is/was very much a product of Anne's times, and it took great courage in the era when the story was written (1973) for a girl to break away from what was expected of her and "disappoint" familial expectations the way she did. I think the stories were a boost to girls/young women to realise that they could escape the mould without catastrophe resulting

Hmm, I guess it's time for a re-read, because my memory of the second Nora Fenn story is that she no longer has any intentions of returning home. That surprised me because in the first she had seemed pretty committed to making/keeping the family farm successful (despite the fact you'd think she'd want to flee from her father) and was looking forward to what could be done with computers/modernization.

I'd like a nice new series, or at least two books, in which Anne puts in her best work and gives, essentially, a swan song to writing. She's worked long and hard enough, IMO, and it's time she rested on her laurels, and relaxed.

Me too, ghyle. Sadly, I think that Anne's writing has deteriorated to the point that she'd best stick with short stories rather than novels.

Sure: give her a break, and let her know how much we appreciate her by buying her books, by giving her feedback, and by acclaiming her. I gather, quite well, from Hans and others that she is a lovely lady, and we should be considerate of her, and her years, IMO.

A lot of Anne's books and stories are products of there time - such as the Nora Fenn stories (which I too like, and would love to see more of). Love the idea of the Crystal Singer prequel Cheryl! Or more books set in the Restoree universe - actually a follw up to the book would be wonderful. It would be nice to know what happened to Sara and Harlen...

Anne started writing during a period of time when many things were changing in society. It would be fair to say the world she grew up in, no longer exists. Women are seen as being equal to men now (well for the most part, there are still some dinosaurs out there), and in fiction women play a much stronger role. There are many writers who would credit Anne with helping to pave the way for that.

Anne was the first women to win the Hugo award for fiction - no small feat at the time.

As to whether she still has a voice today: we still read her books, we still find something within them that draws us, and holds us. The truth is that there is still something there that we wish to embrace. New people are finding her books, and falling in love with them too. Anne still has a voice in todays world, and I hope that she does write something new for us, be it Pern or something completly different.

As to whether she's lost it - I know for a fact that the best selling Pern book of all time is still "The Skies of Pern" - in fact according to Transworld it may be her best selling book of all time (so far).

I don't know about any new series, although I agree that a sequel to Restoree would be interesting.

I must admit that, despite my usual talent for lateral thinking, I never envisaged Todd taking over.

I HAD sort of thought out an Anne-to-end-all-Annes as a sort of retirement winding up ......

Before shutting down Aivas, unknown to the Pernese (or their author) sends a message burst to Central Worlds.

The Central Worlds Government, although very grateful to Sassinak for putting down the rebellion, need to get her out of the limelight for a bit (military & politics not mixing well, etc. etc) while they settle things back down. So, guess what? Sassinak, and Lunzie, in the ZD get to go and investigate.

This recontact gives everybody an excuse for much quaffing of Benden wine and much tuning by Menolly.

The bundle of reports sent back include one on the telepathic dragon/rider bond. It states that since telepathy is biologically impossible, the only "logical" explanation is that something in the Pernese soil causes piezoelectric crystals to grow in the brains of those Pernese who are genetically prone to such.

Central Worlds react by requesting that Killashandra takes a working holiday in that direction to investigate. She travels by brainship, at last meeting Helva (much singing en-route).

And yet more excuses for Benden wine and music on THEIR arrival!

I don't know how many more of Anne's heroines we could fit in. Any ideas?

In The Girl Who Heard Dragons there were several shorts featuring a woman named Chloe. I'd like to see more of her. She was not a Nice Character, and seemed to be a darker side of Anne's usual writing. Which intrigues me.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Chloe and the Time Cave either, it was an intigueing concept that wasn't fully realized in the two shorts she wrote. It always felt like there was a larger story she had in mind for how things worked, but clearly never wrote.

Among my absolute favorite books of Anne's is Pegasus in Space.

I would love to have a book (or two or three or more), filling in the time between PiS and The Rowen.

There had to have been so many ups and downs in building and changing the FT&T organization, and its ultimate acceptance in the known universe and beyond.

I would also be delighted to have an additional Doona book. That, with Petaybee, have ranked among my favorite series.

I was thinking perhaps Ms Mccaffrey could write about how Stev Kimmer(?) and his family were "rescued" in "Rescue Run" - a continuation of how they got back to Central Worlds and using the jewels they picked up, along with the numbweed samples. They could have set up a pharmacautical company that proved to be the best selling product and how one of the scions came back to Pern to find out his/her's ancestors' roots, regarding Pern and see for him/herself whether Pern's being blacklisted was worth it or not. It has possibilities.

Yeah, once the crew realized why they were so dangerously overweight they tossed all the metal and jewels out the airlock, along with everything else they could pry loose, and Stev Kimmer (accident, or so it was claimed...) Anything rather than fall into the sun.

Well that's simple - the Pernese dragonriders exhibit Talent. Ergo, on their way, Sassinak is routed via *insert name of Tower here* pick up *insert name of uber-powerful Talent here* and much quaffing of Benden, yadda yadda yadda!

Maybe as Yana has experience of dealing with 'abandoned' colonists who are about to be exploited/misunderstood by Central Worlds, she should have a place?

Not sure about Acorna .... unless that space bug has been detected as coming from the disturbed Red Star? And there is the telepathic link between RK and (can't remember the character or exact book). Showing evidence of non-human telepathy, maybe a contingent from there too?

But I am for at least one more book between Pegasus and Tower, and a sequel to Nimisha. Perhaps even a super epilogue to Tower with the grandchildren of Thian et al discussing the developments since then?
