Default My newest - Albedo 1

Just received my copy of Albedo 1! It has a fantastic interview of Anne and the short, short story called The Orange Cat. The fanzine (not really sure if it qualifies as a magazine) did a great job on the interview with lots of good questions. It was done in 1996 before Anne's 70th birthday. It gives me great info for my interview project! No pictures with this one tho.

They did a really good interview with Anne and then published The Orange Cat which Anne wrote for a project for Prentice Hall. It had to use description and be no more than 600 words. Now I've got to find the Prentice Hall original text book!

Becky, I can't wait to read your interview project "Highlight". It should be very interesting, and have a lot of new information in it for a lot of us.

Hmm, I'm not sure that the interview thing will be a highlight. And this could take a while for me to get around to doing. But now that my son and his family have left, I'll be able to devote some time to it. I just wish I had another computer, a laptop, so that I could sit somewhere cozy and do it. Maybe someday I will, but I'll need to organize the interviews first and then not forget the introductions as they have good stuff in them too. This may end up more a biography, now that I think about it! Hmmmmm..........::wanders off to mull this over::

I actually spent a little over an hour pulling out all the magazines I have and going thru to be sure they have an interview or something interesting in them. I didn't know I had so many! But I've got a small start at least. Once I look at them I can figure out more what I want to do, I hope!

If anyone has an extra copy of this they'd be willing to sell, let me know. They're sold out at the publisher and I can't find any albedo one issues on ebay even after looking for months!

That sucks but it has been sold out for a long time now. One consolation: second hand copies do surface now and then

Haven't they figures of how many were made? I'm at work, so can't check Hargreaves. And maybe there's a number on my copy of the magazine.

What a nice job you landed! Tell us more!

I have a very precious pristine copy of Issue 10, with the interview and short story, that I bought in March 2009. I bought it directly from them and it was the last unsold copy they had. It is signed by the three editors.

I'm on the editorial staff now It's fun choosing stories to show to the world. Very interesting experience. There's a lot of realllllllly bad stuff (as in people don't even check their theres or they'res in the first sentence) that comes in, but there's some wonderful stories too.

I really haven't seen one surface, and I look for this hard. This and A Time When (at a reasonable price) are what I'm looking for the most. so if you see one on ebay or something do inbox me!

And my typical follow up of: does anyone have a hard copy that someone might be willing to part with at some point? It's been a few years, still need this!

I can do you a high quality scan of Anne's bits (pp.12-23). Not allowed to scan the whole thing (international convention) but one 'chapter' is permissible.

That's the one. Anne's last paragraph is missing and a 600 word shorty called "The Orange Cat".

You want?

Here t'is!

Quote:
Prentice Hall in the States were doing a presentation source book for ninth grade. I did a taped interview. They were using me as an author who describes things and I was to tell people how to work description into stories, which I managed to do. Then about ten days ago I was phoned up and asked could I do a six hundred word fantasy story using description for their book. Well, it’s very difficult to do a science fiction short story in six hundred words. In fact it takes you more like six thousand, because you’ve got to explain your premise and do all the embellishment and tell a story. So I sat down and thought about this for some time and then just started working. I was well over six hundred words and I could only have those two pages, that was what I was allowed. And then I came up with the basic story, very simple, and I put in only enough to explain it using vivid verbs, descriptive passages, adjectives and sensory descriptions. This is not easy to do in a fantasy/sf story. So what I’d like to know is if I did what I set out to do?

(Here’s the story. We’d love to hear what you think.)
Quote:
The Orange Cat – Anne McCaffrey

“I have come,” said a mellifluous base (sic) voice in my ear. Like no other voice I’d ever heard because the three words came out like a muted roar.
Head still banging from where Sammy Evans had banged me about on my way home from school, I opened one eye. What I saw made me sit bolt upright inspite of my headache. There was this humungous cat sitting beside my bed, nearly as big as the tiger at the Esso station down the road. Only he hadn’t any stripes.
“Ouch! My head!”
Before I could duck, the cat leaned over and with a tongue the size of a welcome mat – and of a similar texture – licked my forehead. The headache disappeared!
“Hey, how’d you do that?”
The cat closed his eyes, smiling the way Mother said her Maine cat Chanel could smile. When he opened them again, I noticed that they were harvest-moon orange pupils like a moonless Hallowe’en night. In fact, he was all orange: not a bright marmalade orange but a sort of orange-sherbert orange, with aq huge ruff of paler orange surrounding his big head. I mean, this was Jurrasic Park-type cat.
He looked at me straight, eyeball to eyeball. His chest was bigger than Arnold Schwarzheger’s. His paws were talon-filled buckets on the end of piano-leg legs. His whiskers were aerial-thick, jutting out from a muzzle like a road grader; spikes to impale a mouse easily.
“I have many abilities,” the cat said suavely. “The one for which Chanel has called me is this problem you have with the bully, Sammy Evans.”
“Chanel?” Chanel and I barely tolerated eachother. “Sammy Evans?” How did Monster Cat know about that fat, mean, couch-potato?
“Chanel beseeched my assistance,” he said and, on cue, mother’s tortoise-shell wandered into my room. She insinuated herself between the cat’s front legs and sat, her expression totally smug. Regally, he lowered his head and she rubbed against his jaw. “She is a favourite of mine. So, we . . .” and he sounded like Lion King, “shall deal with this Sammy Evans who causes you and mental anguish to Chanel’s beloved Person. We . . . do not like bullies.”
“me neither,” I said fervently. “Only how can you stop him?” I paused, awed at the prospect of Sammy Evans confronted with this cat. Why he’d wet himself. I grinned. “It’s not as if you could walk with me to school all the time. . .”
“Ah,” and the cat winked, cocking his head slightly. “I will not be seen. Chanel will. But it will not just be my lovely friend here . . .” and he paused to give a proprietary lick to her face, adoringly turned up to his. His fangs were like Power Ranger talons. “At the first attempt to bully you, she will summon me.” He paused and smiled again. “Once is usually all it takes when I put a paw in.”
“Once?”
He smiled an ineffable smile. “Trust me. It never takes me long to achieve the proper effect. After tomorrow you will not be bothered by this Sammy Evans.”
In the flick of a tail, he was gone. Chanel hadn’t moved and she was smiling up at me.
“Chanel, did all that just happen?”
“Prrrrow,” she said emphatically, and, with a saucy flick of her orange and black plumed tail, left the room.

Do you know what? I could trust him. The next morning, Sammy Evans took one look at Chanel following me to school and streaked away, screaming in hoarse terror. Chanel smiled at me and, with a twitch of her tail, returned home.
