Default A thought...

How much older is Allison-Anne Greevy than Thian? I'm halfway through Damia's children (rereading for the nth time) and I realised I don't know how old she is. Thian is 16 when he's sent to the Vadim, and they get together about 3 months in, but somehow I cant quite imagine th great AM having a Lieutenant Nurse in her teens. Any ideas? I'm stumpted

Not sure what age of joining Military and or post secondary schooling ran in that world. but sixteen did seem to be the main age for them being able to be considered adult. So, if that was a benchmark, figure four years for a degree to be commissioned, if she started as enlisted, then earned a commission, typically that's a lot longer, think ten years to be commissioned on that route. That would have her at ensign at twenty or so, then figure a minimum of four years to go from ensign to Lieutenant. could have been reduced a touch by head of class type promotion on graduation to Lieutenant J.G. or equivalent. She did note that Thian was a green kid the day she met him, so likely she has had some time on post(s). I'd guess she was at most 24-25 when Thian was sixteen. but not less than 22.

You can make RN in three years, especially in the service. If she entered at 16, that would make her 19 when she achieved that, and probably ensgin level. Another two to three years to Lt, if I recall what my cousin once told me... would make her 21 or 22.

I always just assumed that she was 3 or 4 years older than Thian was, never really noticed that it didn't say her age.

In UK graduate nurses (21+) are commissioned straight in as Lt.

Actually, it's the same here, P'ter. I was just working under the assumption she recieved her training in the service, which some do. Of course, with our BOCES programs, you can make RN at 19.
