Cheryl is right, P'ter. That is also the reason why you'll not find all books (not even the famous ones) on the list, you see

Re: Johnny Greene, the list

Well, always up for a challenge, I perused Freedom's Ransom. How about John Wendell? US HC version p. 99 he is introduced as "... a wiry man, in the Levi's that seemed almost a uniform. He also wore a broad belt from which depended pouches and on which were fixed special loops. Visible as a mound under his Levi's jacket was a mobile phone. He wore a baseball cap decorated with a Motorola M logo."

Then on page 277 "...that nice young fellow at the green coords -- Wendell? Wasn't that his name? Yes, John Wendell. Kathy had been mopey now and then. It was Jax who had clued Kris in to her interest in the attractive young communications expert who was worlds away from them right now. Oh, well."

That's my best guess.

That is known Ginny, this thread is solely about finding the references to him.

Davidasix, not sure about your find. The John is OK but the Endell is very far from any variation on the name Greene... What do others think?

Without more information, it doesn't seem to match. Unless John Greene's middle name was Wendell. Besides, isn't there a more obvious JG in the Freedom series?

I may be resurrecting an undead thread here (I entered a casual word-search to find out if I could why there were so many Johnny Greenes in her work, and now I've found out) but there's also a Jon Greene in the last of the Doona series (Treaty at Doona). I haven't finished it yet, but so far he seems to be an 'honorable enemy' type rather than an actual good guy. However, he is consistently painted as a patriot trying to do the right thing rather than being out for himself, so he may yet do a Heel Face Turn (gotta love TVtropes).

Thank you Ack!

I've added commander Jon Greene to the list. It has been quite some time since I read anything from the Doona series

Glad your search engine pointed you to this thread when searching for John Greene, that way this bulletin board is contributing in its own way to his "immortality"!

And welcome to the board! Do introduce yourself in the thread in the Café if you feel like it.

Who is Johnny Greene? I've noticed the recurring J.G. names throughout Anne's various works, but never realized that it was a tribute. Please enlighten me!

Anne McCaffrey and her family had a dear friend named John Greene. At some time John, who had been a soldier by profession, joined the French foreign legion. He was killed (murdered) in France, in the former princedom of Orange. His murder was never solved.

Starting with the book The Renegades of PernAnne included John as a character (usually a minor character) "to give him a longer life and immortality" as Anne herself says.

There's a picture of John, and some additional information, in Todd McCaffrey's biography of his mother, titled "Dragonholder". And of course there's also information on him in Robin Roberts excellent biography "A Life with Dragons".

Johnny appears in at least every series Anne and I have done together, if not every single book--he's a series character in Acorna and in the Petaybee and Twins of books too--often a pilot. He doesn't appear until Book 2, Catacombs, in the Tales of the Barque Cats.

A book 2 of Barque Cats, Catacombs? When will it be published?

The Rowan is my favourite!

"The name rowan is believed to derive from the Norse runa - "a charm". It was often planted outside houses to ward off witches. On May Day a spray of rowan leaves was hung over doors to repel evil, and wells dressed with rowan to keep witches away. The rowan, or mountain ash, is found commonly in Scotland, sometimes clinging to a rock face."

i've noticed how AMC uses that name so often. cant remember which book it was, but one of hers was dedicated to someone of that name or similar.

be interesting to know the story behind that.

The story is told in Dragonholder, Todd's biography of his mother.

In short: Johnny was a good friend of the family (at the time the kids were still young). He took service with the French Foreign Legion and attained the rank of quartermaster. He was killed in Orange, France, nobody knows why. The murder case was never solved. After that Anne decided to make Johnny immortal by giving him a role in every book.
