Oh, Maelin, I had not paid any attention to the ice cream, I was still thinking about the meatrolls.

I like the Skinny Cow's ice-cream sandwiches. Chocolate peanut butter is good, mint is better.

Breyer's tastes the most like actual natural ingredients, Ben and Jerry's is nice for the mix-ins (and I always get a warm fuzzy feeling thinking about how the company founded by a couple of dippy hippies got bought out by giant multinational conglomerate Unilever. Makes me feel MUCH better about buying their ice cream.) Problem with both of them is they're fattening. I can usually make a little thing of B&J's last for at least four servings, but sometimes that takes a lot of willpower.

ETA: I just don't think I've ever seen anyone from Benzonia anywhere before. I used to be from Weidman, equally oddball, and was floored when someone on-line actually knew where it was. (Yes, world, there are places in Michigan that Are Not Detroit. That aren't even close to Detroit.)

If people want to know what something means, they can google. I'm not going to bother citing things that are perfectly clear on their own. The only people I usually define words for in spoken conversation are little children and ESLs who ask for a definition.

Back to meatrolls -

I was rereading DQ and found a fairly good description of a BAD meatroll, when F'lar and Lessa are at the Telgar Smithcrafthall to see Fandarel's distance-writer.

Unfortunately I left the book at the house, but I thought I'd mention it!

Something along the lines of, the bread was tough, the sausage inside composed of huge inedible chunks...

Also, it occurred to me when I was reading about the Telgar wedding, and Robinton grabs a handful of finger-sized meatrolls, that what he was taking was probably NOT journey rations. It wasn't made to hold up, it's party finger food. So this is probably a case where it WOULD be pastry around it. Same for meatrolls at any gather.

Are you kidding? I dont' know if they've been sold off again, but they got bought out. Only reason I could bring myself to buy it--I love sticking it to the hippies.

Bum. I hate when little companies are bought out. I have to say, i was recommended on taste, not on manifacture and where the ingrediants were sourced from.

I suspect that on Pern, as on Earth, there are as many varieties of meatrolls as there are cooks who make them and occasions to make them for. If you're in a hurry to sit down and eat something, wrap some sausages in some pastry and pop them in the oven. If you're entertaining, use better quality sausage and fancy them up a bit. For travel rations, use some sort of smoked sausage in a dough that won't flake. And of course for a gather or a big event like a wedding, you'd make them more delicate and handy.

I am growing increasingly curious: what exactly is it that people here are calling a "sausage roll"?

The large ones remind me of hot pockets, but then it's hard to judge size in a picture. And Hot Pockts/Lean Pockets have a variety of fillings, not just sausage.
Smaller ones look a little like pizza rolls before they're baked.

nope, they're all just mushed sausage meat. The small ones are approx an inch long and the medium ones behind are approx 3-4" long..

I was referring more to the shape than the exact size. The pizza rolls are less than an inch unless backed, hot pockets about six inches.

I always assumed that they made meat rolls out of whatever was available... We know they use beef and fish to make them, and I don't see why they wouldn't use other types of meat as well. I often make meat rolls (sausage rolls) with any left over meat I might have in the fridge. Waste not, want not!

I would have thought that their primary meat source would be wherries, which would probably be closer to turkey than any of the meats listed in the poll.

Ooooo, these all look so tempting! I, too, pictured Hot Pockets (only more sturdy) and Pizza Rolls as I was reading.
I think I'll try a version with meat and cheese (I researched it-they do have cheese) and some veggies (potatoes/tubers, carrots/red-roots maybe, peas cuz I love them)- kind of a handheld stew.
Oh, dear. I'm really getting hungry.

Yes, they had fermentation (wine) AND distillation (the Quikal of the first settlers). On Earth, there are enough natural yeasts in the air and on fruit skin to cause natural fermentation without any help from humans. And supposedly risen bread happened when somebody used beer to mix the dough for a batch of flat-bread.

And no problem using up the wherries and bigger livestock -- for most of Pern's history they lived in fairly large communities and cooked communally.

A local baker here makes something like meatrolls. They are small buns, about the size of a large egg, with beef and sauerkraut filling. A handfull of them would be five or six.

Yes, you are spoiled by modern refrigeration! (^_^) Homes would have cupboards for storing food, well sealed against pests, in spots which would be cooler (i.e., away from the hearth). The meatballs would last several days, rpvided they were not eaten first.

As an experienced cook, I have made meatrolls using a bread machine to make the dough. That way you end up with 3 meatrolls. What I would like to do, is find a meatroll recipe using home made puff pastry.
