Lucky them. I also like a lot of the other stuff on ESA's site

I suppose you must be "into this" to be calling it gorgeous

When I read the text I do understand they are pretty special.

The last composite photo is amazingly beautiful...and terrifying as well. You just can't help but really realize that with that many planets in just this one photo...there has to be other beings out there...somewhere!!! Perhaps they are looking at photos of our area of space, saying the same thing... all the while feeling just as terrified.

The images come from the PACS instrument. I'm waiting to see the first data from the SPIRE instrument, which was built by a consortium lead by the UK. The UKATC contributed the beam steering mirror - our first piece of kit launched into space.

That must be very exciting, Steven!

OK, I have to ask, what do the acronyms PACS (my mind immediately went: Pacs: short for Paksenarrion! ) and SPIRE stand for?

Steven...I know you travel all over the world, working on and for some of the different telescopes...sooooo... did you get to do any of the work on either of these [PACS or SPIRE] set ups???

No, I wasn't involved in either of these projects, but some of my colleagues at the UKATC were involved with SPIRE.

The Herschel first light images have been released (including ones from SPIRE). See the link http://www.esa.int/esaSC/SEMAYT6CTWF_index_0.html.

The first results look like a spectacular success so far. You can see how much better the images are from the previous far infrared space telescope, Spitzer.

Even I can see that the SPIRE pics are significantly better!
