Default Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

I was in my local 2nd hand bookstore today, and quite by chance I came across a very intersting book that I have never seen before....

It is called Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, edited by Robert Holdstock, with a forward by Asimov. It's a 1978 1st ed HC published by Octopus. Any here know of this book?

I was flicking through the pages, and found a full colour, double page picture of David Roe's cover from Dragonsong!

The book is mostly a critique of the genre, and mentions Anne a few times (nothing substantial though), but what drew to me to the book was the David Roe picture. It has a really cool section at the back that has collecting tips specifically for the genre, and detailed lists of all the Sci fi Cons around the world. It's very dated though but really interesting.

I figure that somebody here must be familier with book? Any body else have one?

Well, the David Roe art was never used for the hardcover, which was published late seventies and, according to my online collection list (http://www.pern.nl/library/collection_pern.html) the earlie paperback I have is a Corgi 9th printing 1987. That has the David Roe art, so I'd guess and say that Corgi started to use his art for the paperback cover in 1979/1980.

But without Hargreaves (am at work now) one can't tell for sure.

Hmm, I just checked Hargeaves, and it seems the David Roe art was used by Corgi for the 1st time in ...... 1978 ... and that is the same year the Encyclopedia was published!

So, which came 1st? Dragonsong or the encylopedia? Surely it must be Dsong?

Hans are you familier with the book?

No I am not familiar with that book, Sam.

1978? wow, that's earlier than I thought. But like you thought the encyclopedia must have been published (mot long) after Dragonsong or else the author should have had prior knowledge about the cover art for Dragonsong.

I, too, have a copy of that book. However, beyond the year (1978), I cannot find any additional reference to a publication date.

[QUOTE=Hans;158995]No I am not familiar with that book, Sam.

But it has a Pern picture in it!

Bob12, I checked Abe Books and there were a few revised editions published in 1983 and 1987

Sam...do you think that you could put up a photo of the book your talking about? It always makes it much easier to discuss a book when everyone is sure which one their talking about.
I believe I also have this book particular book...but I can't be sure without seeing yours.
