Default summer goodies

While on holiday I was browsing around a few different shops and found this ...

Yes it's by the guy who wrote all those Biggles and Worrells books. This is the first SF he wrote (1954). My copy is a 2nd ed (1970). There is a sequel called 'Return to Mars'. He proposed space ships powered by cosmic rays.

Returning home I was perusing a used-book seller in our market and found this from 1968 ...

He had a total 23 AMCs including this 1986 copy of DQ with the 1979 Whelan cover.

I had to buy it for the top line of the blurb inside: "Silver Threads Among the Bold"!

Nice additions, P'ter! I like the art on the cover of the first one and the title too, Kings of Space.
I'm guessing you have most of the Anne books the market seller had? Having 23 Anne books for sale is nice to hear about. It can be hard to find any sometimes.

Nice finds. Biggles' books are as hard to find as much as trying to find hen's teeth Come across some at various stages but not always. Same as AMC books, can find heaps or none at all, depending on seller. The used-book seller near me, thinks he knows lots about AMC books. HUH, I say. I've had to put him right on several occasions

Nice finds and acquisitions, P'ter!
Could you please set your reduce-upload-option in photobucket to 800x600 or 1024x768?

I've reduced the file sizes to 768 x 1024, and I've tried re-inserting the codes, but they STILL come out the same size!

Funny. Don't worry, no real problem though.
But for next time please check the box with the appropriate size just before uploading? I think it will work then.

I know this wasn't bought in the summer as I only got a week ago, but it's another oldy to go with the Capt Johns.

The cover is very boring and the jacket is missing (it was a colour picture similar to the frontispiece)

Written back in 1955; it concerns a young boy called Tas (of course) living in a fictionalized version of Woomera. He and his best buddy accidentally nick said mail rocket and try to carry out its delivery/collection schedule.

Unfortunately the writer (Reginald Alan Martin writing as E. C. Eliott) forgot that dumping a number of mail sacks out of a rocket while in flight does nasty variable things to the overall mass of the rocket, the distribution of said mass and its moment of inertia. They're also meant to pick up mail sacks WHILE IN FLIGHT!

Fun for young readers though.

I thought you'd like the ship.

At one point in the story the boys get sand into the workings of the vertical stabiliser so Tas has to pop his head out of a hatch to apply a grease gun!!

At supersonic speed?

Today I went to an auction and they had "Biggles" books up for grabs but the 2 boxes went for ridiculous amounts so umm.....not impressed so just going to hide in a corner but I did find an Elsie Oxenham book fairly cheap at a garage sale afterwards so I'll read that. Honestly I blame my parents for getting me to read "old-ish" stories like Biggles, Oxenham, Brent-Dyer, Grant-Bruce etc...then I struck out and found the likes of McCaffrey, Fiest, Hobb and Brooks etc to keep me happy too

Great find, P'ter. Too bad the dustjacket wasn't with it.
