Question Publicist's Bookplate (??) in 1st Ed PB of Red Star Rising

Okay, so I was looking through my Pern paperbacks today to see how many of them were 1st editions. I found quite a few, but one in particular caught my attention straight away. It is the 1st Ed Corgi paperback of Red Star Rising. I have had this book for 10 years, having picked it up for next to nothing in a second hand bookstore, and I use it as my reading copy. I know, sorry, I won't be doing that again.... Anyway, inside it on the title page I found what appears to be a bookplate:

It says:

TRANSWORLD PUBLISHERS
40 Yeo Street, Neutral Bay, NSW 2089
Tel: 02 9908 4366 Fax: 02 99538 8563

We have great pleasure in sending you
this book for review/feature
Publication Date: October 1997 (hand written)
Recommended Retail Price: $14.95 (hand written)
For further information, please contact me

Karen Reid (hand written signature)

Karen Reid
Senior Publicist

Can somebody please tell me what this is exactly? Is it some sort of presentation copy? I have googled Karen Reid, and she appears to be a publicist at Random House Australia now. Should I email her?
Any light that any of you could shed on this for me, would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm hoping I have something maybe a little unusual or something....

It is exactly what it says it is. A free (UK) copy, given by the publisher to soemone who will review the book, for a website, magazine or another kind of publication.

Karen Reid is the one who sent the book to the recipient. I don't see any rason why you would need to contact her.

It'snice to have a copy that is more special than a regular one but this doesn't particularly make the book more valuable, just different and nice to own.

I once found a Pern paperback with a sticker inside saying it was owned by Virginia Kidd Agency, which happens to be Anne's agent. That's something like your find. I bought it out of curiosity and for the novelty of it.

What Hans said. It's not a special edition of the book, like an uncorrected proof/ARC, just a regular copy that was given away by the publisher to get a review. It is unique though and I'd definitely hold on to it!

I think its pretty darn cool myself! It makes your collection unique and adds personal value to it! I look for things like this all the time (without much luck)! It does make the Hunt more fun! Anyone can have a plain old pb, but not one with a history!

It's one of those books that makes your collection interesting and certainly something that you shouldn't be embarrassed about. After all, hidden treasures can be found in the most unexpected places Mine was a 1st edition (although ex-library) Dragonsong that I didn't realise until Hans did a Highlight on this book.

Question Re: Publicist's Bookplate (??) in 1st Ed PB of Red Star Rising

I must admit that it was the possible back story with this book that intersted me in the first place.... that is why I thought to contact her (Karen). I was thinking that Perth is a VERY small place, and that with any luck, she may be able to tell me who she gave the book to, and that way I might be able to tie it to a particular review...

Perth as in the Dragonriders of Perth? Not mine, saw that for real on eBay once or twice!

Perth a small town? I thought it was about the biggest of the wets coast?

Perth is the capital of Western Australia, but as far towns go it is fairly small. We only have one sci-fi speciality book store in the whole city! In comparison to a city like Sydney in New South Wales, or Melbourne in Victoria, Perth is miniscule...

Did it? I don't follow sport at all..... But sadly as far as cities go it's pretty small... Not that I would like to live in a big city, but it is hard from a collectors point of view to make really cool finds...

But the internet is your friend, Samsara.
I would never be where I am now as an Ane fan, as a pern fan and as a collector if it hadn't been for the internet! You have at least the advantage of living in an English language country! I don't. And with only 16 million peeps in my country its amazing that they translated so many Pern titles!

Perth a small town? *chuckles*, Samsara, I think between Perth and Freo, you've got the 2 biggest towns in WA and compared to my town, you're positively major and I don't even have a bookshop in my neck-of-the-woods, at least you've got one

Don't get me wrong, I love Perth, and I know the internet is my friend (how could I not love the internet after what my mum just bought me??? And if it wasn' for the internet, I would never have found you guys!!!!) but in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne, Perth is teeny tiny. I only mention this as it is possible that Perth is small enough that the book was only given to a couple of people. If Karen can remember who she gave it to, I might be able to trace my book to a particular review...

If you could find out what magazine/paper her review appeared in you might be able to get an archive copy, and have something else rare.
