Hello everyone!

Every now and then I get the urge to check out Pern fandom and see what's going on. I wasn't finding very much on active clubs until I stumbled across this forum.

As for me, I'm sort of relic from the past. I found Dragonflight and Dragonquest on a grocery store shelf in the 70's. From then on, I eagerly read each new dragon book. I've also read some of the Ship and Crystal books. I enjoyed them, but haven't completed their series.

In the 80's, I participated in several fan clubs, creating characters, writing stories, helping start new clubs, and attending conventions. I met other Pern fans on QLink, then met them in person at Sci Fi conventions. I was lucky enough to meet Anne in 1988 and have her sign some of my books at the DraConIs convention in Kentucky.

I think it was the late 80's/ early 90's that I drifted away from the fan clubs. I moved to another state and away from my local fan club and lost touch with everyone. I never lost my love of Anne's dragons though and I still have all my Pern books.

I go through spurts in being able to find some reading time. I'd run out of unread dragon books on my shelves, so I dug out my old Pern books to reread again. After that I figure I can catch up on some of the later non-trilogy books that I haven't read yet.

As for the mundane me, I was born on the West coast, live on the East coast, work as an administrative assistant and dabble in all sorts of crafts in my spare time. I share my humble abode with a dog and two cats. I'm still searching for that elusive firelizard clutch so I can claim an egg for my own.

Welcome on board, Windelee

So if the name hadn't such bad press we would call you and oldtimer, right (like some others here on the board)

Do you happen to have (oldtime-analog) photographs of DraConIs?

Enjoy yourself here!

Yes, I do. Back then, my camera went everywhere I went. For those young-timers that may not have heard of DraConIs, Anne was the Guest of Honor and Robin Wood was the Artist Guest of Honor. Besides the several signing opportunities that Anne did over the weekend, she also narrated a dragon hatching skit that we did on stage. Fun memories. 20 years ago seems like so far away.

Welcome, Windylee

Fabulous to hear some details about a convention that long ago -- well before my time as I've only being going to cons for 9 years or so. Any pictures you have to share from DraConIs would be much enjoyed. And also if you happen to have any program material left, there are those of us collectors here that would be fascinated to see scans of it.

I scanned some photos and documents from my DraConIs photo album that I thought would the most interesting. Some of the documents were bigger than 8 1/2 by 11, so I had to do them in 2 scans. I uploaded the pics of Anne first, so of course, photobucket put them at the bottom of the group.
Here's the link if you want to take a peek:

Brown Re: Say Hello and Be Welcomed to the Library Café on MoM!

Hello everyone,
I’m Harc my real name is David I’m a native Coloradoan but a pernese at heart. My craft is masonry, I’m a husband to a beautiful Filipina and father to a beautiful 9 month old daughter. I first fell in love with pern as a thirteen year old boy.

It all started around 1992; being a lifelong student of the journey my father spent a considerable amount of time in the public library. While I was completely disinterested in personal growth at that age, I began to scour the Sci-fi and fantasy section. As I worked alphabetically I remember sliding Isaac Asimov’s Foundation off the shelf, thumbing through to the forward I quickly realized my vocabulary was slightly lacking, grimacing I slipped it back into its spot. Dune by Frank Herbert caught my eye as I scanned down the aisle, but it met with the same result. Sighing I was about to resign myself back to the children’s section when The Dragonriders Of Pern popped out at me. Dragonriders? I’d seen them depicted in fantasy artwork before the, concept fascinated me. As I read the forward from Dragonquest I found it read well and the culture captivated my imagination. I decided then and there I wanted to read every book in the series. The selection was very fragmented but there was one trilogy sitting there on the shelf so I checked out all three volumes. My very first Anne book was Dragonsong, I quickly began to identify with the characters in the Harper Hall, Menolly for her insatiable desire for music, I too at the time was a choir boy and delighted when Piemur’s, voice broke in Dragondrums, misery loves company. I eventually read most of the series but as I grew older and my reading interests expanded, my teenage love affair with pern slowly began to fade away.

Roughly two years ago I saw my eleven year old niece reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini, I read the back cover as I sat across from her, and was immediately wisped away to pern once again. I did not mention Anne’s series as being a pioneer in dragon lore, for fear my niece would think me an old-timer but I realized I still had a spark for pern in my heart. A few months later I stared sheepishly as she was reading Dragonsong her first Anne book a friend had shown her the trilogy in the school library, she said. I told her that had been my first too. I decided to return to pern and began to collect my own series. As I now have reread my own Harper Hall trilogy I find Master Robinton my favorite character but I will save that for another post.

It’s nice to see that pern is still attracting the youth forty some years later. My niece and I now share a common love and we have become closer for it, I hope my daughter will enjoy pern too, thank you Anne.

Well I’m glad to meet you all, that’s my story and I’m honored to be here, this forum is exactly what I was looking for thanks Cheryl.

Harc

Welcome Harconnis!

I am just wondering about your name: Harconnis. It reminds me of the Harconnens in Frank Herbert's Dune, but they were not nice people, so I wonder what the name Harconnis means to you, David?

Just figured to pop in and say "'Ello!" to everyone here. Like quite a few others, I started weaning my sci-fi teeth on Anne McCaffrey, sometime before I turned ten. I've read most of her novels since, and have been a long-time reader of the sci-fi, fantasy, and general fiction novels. I admit to a bit of PBeMing on Pern when I was 11, up to sometime in my teens, when the groups I was in dissolved; this all being part and parcel of any 90's interaction I had with the fandom.

I've taken up to re-reading the Pern series lately, having lost those other ones (Except Decision at Doona) of hers I had at one point. I do enjoy all her series, if for whatever reason when I read Pegasus in Space I couldn't get involved in the story.

Nice to be around here!

That is a great question Nina, thank you for asking, I will try to keep this short for the sake of the mom staff.

First, if I may begin by drawing your attention to the moral of the story. I will begin by quoting the old warning "never judge a book by its cover", indeed Frank Herbert is one of my favorite authors, and the Harconnens were a treacherous people full of malice and guile, but I assure you if I were a Harconnin, I would surprise you. For the moment you prejudge me, based upon my family history you would be wrong about me. The hero and heroine Paul Atreides and his mother Jessica discover that they are Harconnins themselves the Baron’s own daughter and grandson. Paul became the "Kwisatz Haderach" because of the blood lines he carried in his veins. He could have cast the universe into a never ending jihad but he chose to bring peace to the universe by accepting his heritage, becomming Muad'dib of the Fremen, defeating Feyd-Rautha in the dual, taking Princess Irulan as a wife and assuming leadership not only of the Fermen but of all three great houses, melding them together with Arrakis as its center.

Second, I dabble in writing myself, as I was making up names for my stories I came up with Harc-onn-is derived from the root word hark meaning to listen. I had not realized at the time it sounded very similar to Herbert’s name Harconnin until I read the novel again latter. Because I get so much of the same response I have scrapped the name from my stories but I still use it as a gamer tag and handle for my online presence. I find it is never taken.

Harc,

I would not ever judge a book by its cover, as I have been surprised too many times for good or worse. I was just wondering as I would not choose the name myself. Having read the entire Dune series, I sympatise with the Fremen, and I would have chosen a Fremen name.

Good explanation though I thought there might be someone out there who would aspire to become Muad'dib - the combination of several worlds, greatness and power. Become "Kwisatz Haderach" and change the world so footprints disappear from view into a new future. Quite a responsibility!

I bet Harconnis is a handle never taken

Enjoy the world of Anne McCaffrey!

The Rowan is my favourite!

"The name rowan is believed to derive from the Norse runa - "a charm". It was often planted outside houses to ward off witches. On May Day a spray of rowan leaves was hung over doors to repel evil, and wells dressed with rowan to keep witches away. The rowan, or mountain ash, is found commonly in Scotland, sometimes clinging to a rock face."

Welcome Shadhahvar!

I do love the Talent series, but I also began with "To ride Pegasus".

I stand corrected Nina,

. I am so embarrassed forgetting like that. I too sympathise with the Fremen. In light of your reminder I have edited my explination slightly

I am not sure I am aspiring to become Muad'dib, but I will take that as a compliment.
