Pam and I found this rather unexpected sight - A tower of cans - in Casselton, North Dakota. You'd think it was a really busy spot, because of that guy directing traffic. Not really. It was the middle of nowhere.
If you want more info on the tower - http://www.realnd.com/casseltoncanpileindex.htm

I think this one explains itself. It's in the town of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

I can see two interpretations of this theme: photographs of something unexpected and photographs that turned out in an unexpected way. Here is an example of both.

You don't expect to see this while you are learning to drive:

This photograph was taken during an enjoyable visit to a boating pond in Cornwall in 1980. I didn't expect this to happen to my Dad's hair.

Walking down Great Junction Street in Leith, I turn the corner - and there's a ship parked at the end of the street! And, as a bonus, a colour-coordinated truck.

A wedding party goes walk-about down the High Street of the tiny Borders town of Innerleithen. Looks like bride and groom are already estranged . . .

This was an unexpected product of my son's first home grown tomatoes, years ago in 2002.

Another totally unexpected thing was this photo below being my first officially published photograph, to go with an article in the winter 2009-2010 issue of the New York fashion glossy 'Paper Mag'. It is the Ronald McDonald Haus in Essen, Germany, designed by the famous Austrian architect Hundertwasser.

Found on holiday in Dorset around 1981. Dead monk?

Found in my kitchen. Dead cake?

To this day, I still don't know why the camera did what it did. It's the only time that my camera has taken a picture and it's turned out like this. There was no one around me, and my hands weren't in the way. I also didn't mess around with any settings, so it's a mystery that will never be solved.

Was it something like a Nikon Coolpix? If so I think the lens covers didn't open properly. Can happen if the battery's going flattish.

Nope, the batteries weren't dying because I took several more pictures with that camera that night without that happening. One of the pictures being the photo of my cousin that I used for the portrait theme.

r2005, I had a camera that used to do that for no reason whatsoever. Then after I dropped it in the sand it had a reason

Well, upon going out to the beach at 5.30am to get some pics of the promised glorious sunrise, I was disappointed to see a layer of cloud smack dab on the horizon. But I thought what the hey, may as well grab some pics, it's pretty. Imagine my surprise when I managed to catch a gorgeous set of pictures, all sadly marred by that low streak of deep purple cloud. Surprise one of the morning was to find that this streak of cloud was actually curved and created a wonderful rounded dark contrast to the lightening sky.

Surprise 2 was when the sun actually rose, showing that that dark streak wasn't cloud, but a layer of volcanic dust which shrouded the rising sun with a deeper orange base.

Thank you Mother Nature!

Fun pictures everyone, which of course is not unexpected with this group of photographers.

Hans I am totally agog at the flight of fancy of that Ronald McDonald House. I looked to see if there were others with such creative thinking in the architecture. Alas the ones I could find pictures of look pretty ordinary.

Cheryl, the tulips have not opened yet here, so seeing that bunch was most welcome.

Here's one from the past. I didn't take the picture, that's me in it, over 20 years ago. The occasion was a surprise party for my mom's 60th birthday. She didn't suspect a thing, so that in itself was unexpected.

That's me, my mom, and my sister. The unexpected? That bow is a wall decoration, and is not in my hair, nor even within 3 feet of me.

It's taken all these years for me to show this pic to anyone outside the family, so everyone feel special.

Now that would be a good theme, Draco. Embarrassing photos .... actually maybe I should take that back. There's too many of them to display here. At least your's is one of the "saner" versions of embarassing

Hans...Congratulations on having that wonderful photo published....no wonder your son enjoys farming so much, after growing such an excitable tomato.
